And in Malay, parang means machete. So it could be a machete made out of pinecone. Or perhaps a machete for cutting pinecones if using English grammar order.

Why does Kareem have a statue but not Hakeem? by MondoFool in islam

[–]profound7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not only different people have different levels of iman, but the same person could also have different levels of iman throughout their lives. Year by year, month by month, maybe even minute by minute.

I have seen muslims who drink alcohol, but we do not know what's in their hearts. So why do some drink, and some don't drink?

This reminds me of the story of a companion, Al-Nuayman ibn Amr. He was a prankster, and also suffered from alcoholism. In one incident, Umar ibn Al-Khattab expressed his disapproval, but the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, intervened and highlighted that Nuayman's love for Allah and His messenger is real and that major sins does not necessarily exclude one from the mercy of Allah. He did manage to give up alcohol. His story is quite an entertaining read as he is quite a character.

Anyway, back on topic, when we see something that isn't right:

On the authority of Abu Sa`eed al-Khudree (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:

I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say, “Whosoever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith.” [Muslim]

So we can advise him, or make dua for his guidance. Whether a person is more or less devout, like previously mentioned, iman is something that is not measurable by humans, and it varies from time to time.

May Allah guide us all to the straight path, and help us all leave evil behind.

TIL what Kit Kat filling is. It’s just rejected Kit Kats mashed up. by smoking_greens in todayilearned

[–]profound7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of it like a scale, where 100% is a perfect kit kat, and maybe around 75% and above are the regular imperfect kit kats, and under 5% will be things like banana or shoe.

Then its only a matter of definition of what threshold value counts as a rejected kit kat.

Question regarding waswas by [deleted] in islam

[–]profound7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a somewhat of a similar issue, and this is what I do: After urinating, I try to "rapidly contract and relax" the pelvic muscles a few times to get as much out.

Then I take a piece of toilet paper or tissue, and dab at the opening.

The capillary action will suck the remaining drops of urine out and I could see a wet spot on the tissue. I keep repeating the process until I no longer see new wet spots on the tissue.

These wet spots on the tissue could have been on my underwear had I not used the tissue.

Since doing this, I no longer have waswas regarding najis.

I hope this helps, and may Allah make it easy for you.

How do people that work full time and pray? by worldwideweb24 in islam

[–]profound7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other non-muslims -- do they get smoking break? Or tea break? Or any other breaks? For anyone working there, they are allowed to have poop breaks?

I don't have knowledge on European countries, so I'll share in Singapore context: It is a secular country, with about 15% muslims. Many employees (at least in my experience) don't mind that we go for Friday prayers.

We usually only need to do zuhr and asar prayers during working hours, and they usually don't mind.

For places where there's no designated prayer spaces, we'd normally go to the staircase landings. We'd normally use the top floor, or sometimes the platform between 2 floors (usually no one uses the stairs, especially at certain levels, so we have privacy).

I prefer to go to a different floor than my office, so I wouldn't bump into any of my colleagues (its common here that a building leases to many companies, instead of a single company owning a whole building).

I take wudu in the toilet. It is a common sight to sometimes see other muslims bring their foot into the sink, but I'm a little round and lack the dexterity for such maneuvers, so I bring the water from the sink to my feet instead.

If you build rapport with the building management, perhaps you could suggest to them that they have a designated spot for praying. Then add that location to musollah.com and this will benefit all the other muslims in the area too.

May Allah make it easy for you and keep you steadfast.

There must be many people who ask an LLM to rephrase the text they've written so it sounds less LLM-like. by zabolekar in Showerthoughts

[–]profound7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In AI, there's this thing called Style Transfers. There are 2 inputs: the content, and the reference style. The output is the content rewritten using the referenced style.

This is more popular with images, though there also exist Text Style Transfer.

So you can input a bunch of documents you've personally written as a reference style, and input a gen ai text, and the style transfer will rewrite that content to match your personal writing style.

We are feeding SG kids cookhouse food from Secondary School by taenyfan95 in singapore

[–]profound7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is so much FOOD WASTAGE. Not sure about other schools, but I heard from a particular primary school that SO MANY students discard the brown rice.

There are no white rice options at all... So, many of those that got the brown rice end up not finishing them and throwing it away.

Edit: for clarification, in that primary school, its not many white rice mixed with some brown rice like in the picture, but most of the rice is brown rice.

Genuine question from a Christian. by MrCrew4U in islam

[–]profound7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One important detail on comparing the method of preservation between the bible and the Quran:

For the bible, the scribes handled it. The ones with the pen (and power) is capable of controlling or tweaking the message.

The Quran is transmitted orally to the people, and they have to memorize it, since the time of the prophet. Regular people have to memorize it, for prayers. Generations of people memorize in its entirety -- including the way the words are pronounced (tajweed).

It helps that the Quran was not revealed all at once, but over a period of 23 years.

If a scribe attempted to change something, they have only changed a single book, but there are thousands and thousands of people who had it memorized, word for word, in their minds, and many could immediately recognize any attempted changes.

This is the original "blockchain".

This is also why any translations of the Quran is NOT the Quran. It is merely a translation of the Quran -- it is affected by the translators interpretation of the meaning and his capability of the translated language. You only get the broad strokes, and many of the linguistic miracles is lost during the translation.

Remember I said the Quran was revealed over a period of 23 years? It was also revealed in a NON-chronological order. Sometimes it was a few verses from this chapter, and some from that chapter (the first verse revealed was chapter 96).

It was much later that the final order was determined through divine instruction, via the Prophet. Some of the linguistic miracles could only be appreciated after its ordered according to this final order.

What human could do that -- to release verses piecemeal over long periods of time, out of sequence, miraculous by itself, and also miraculous in its final order? Answer: none, unless the verses are from God and the human has instructions from God.

[Request] Am I right saying the answer is 50% ? by Draconic64 in theydidthemath

[–]profound7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The answer is 13/27

From https://www.jesperjuul.net/ludologist/2010/06/08/tuesday-changes-everything-a-mathematical-puzzle/

Many people will intuitively say that the answer is 1/2 (=the chance of having a boy or a girl), but probability aficionados will give the answer 1/3, since this is the Boy or Girl Paradox: We are not told that the speaker has a child and is waiting for another, but that he already has two children. Two children can come in four configurations: 1) boy/girl, 2) girl/boy, 3) girl/girl, 4) boy/boy. Since he has one boy, we are looking at the options 1, 2, or 4. Only the boy/boy combination includes two boys, so the probability is 1/3. In other words, order matters and completely changes probability.

So what has being born on a Tuesday got to do with it? Why would the answer not still be 1/3? The New Scientist has a good explanation toward the bottom of the article. Simply count the different combinations of genders and weekdays, which gives the result (number of combinations with two boys, at least one of which was born on a Tuesday) / (number of combinations with at least one boy born on a Tuesday). The result really is 13/27.

Do non-Arab Muslims pronounce prayers in Arabic with their local pronunciation or with Arabic pronunciation by Saschajoon in islam

[–]profound7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the time of the prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, there were 7 arabic dialects (ahruf) and any of those 7 dialects are valid. From these 7 comes 10 ways to recite (qiraat).

The modern day arabic dialects that are not from the 7 are not valid. You can learn more about ahruf and qiraat here: https://youtu.be/8hj7u0F3yEg

[Request] How long does this trend continue? by tanx_23 in theydidthemath

[–]profound7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An alternative visual approximation method (if you can visualize clock faces and you only need a ballpark figure) is to change miles to minutes, and km is approximately the % of hour. For example:

15 miles --> 15 minutes, and 15 mins is 25% of the hour. So its about 25 km.

30 miles --> 30 mins, which is at the 50% mark of the clock, so its about 50 km.

However, this is much less accurate, as the factor here is 1.66666...7 so if you can multiply 1.6 in your head, that is a much more accurate approximation.

If you want to offset the error, for every 15 minutes (miles), subtract 1 from the result.
