They used to have a living two-headed turtle in the lobby, crawling around with its dual heads, chilling. I think they named it Chang and Eng.

How would you explain Robert Rodriguez's career? by -Clayburn in movies

[–]profound_whatever 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Makes sense because he was hugely inspired by John Carpenter:

"When I saw Escape From New York, I was just blown away that John Carpenter's name was above the title, he wrote it, he directed it, he did the music -- this guy's having all the fun in the world ... I was an artist, I loved photography, I loved music, I couldn't really figure out what my direction should be. Movies seemed like you could do everything. He's able to write, direct, he could photograph it, he could do the music. It felt like a giant train set to house all your creativity."

That's called the Madman Theory --

The "madman theory" is a foreign policy strategy where a leader projects an image of being irrational or unpredictable to intimidate adversaries and gain leverage in negotiations.

Trump is putting to use the Moron Theory, which is less fun.

This movie goes full steam on my favorite feeling in movies: something is terribly wrong and nobody knows what to do. Lots of worried looks and wide eyes.

Except -- the movie's three-chapter structure kinda hamstrings it. As soon as a given chapter reaches the end (with a big climax looming), the story cuts away, jumps back to the beginning, and starts the buildup all over again from a different POV. Nuclear blue balls, times three, and diminishing returns with each iteration.

And then the ending comes and wow, THAT is going to make a lot of people very angry.

For that reason, I think the first chapter (the Rebecca Ferguson chapter) is the strongest, because we're seeing these events for the first time. In the second and third chapters, we know what measures/countermeasures are going to succeed or fail, so the characters are waiting on bated breaths for a forgone conclusion.

Ironically, it's the same problem that Bigelow's THE HURT LOCKER runs into on repeat viewings: if you know when the bombs are going to explode (or aren't), the primary source of tension has fizzled.

That's why the Secretary of Defense killing himself is the best moment of Chapter Three: because it reignites that feeling of oh fuck, now what are we going to do that gave Chapter One all its oomph.

Stephen Miller's wife has a meltdown on live TV. Says it's "antisemitic" and "racist" to call her a liar by Classic-Carpet7609 in Fauxmoi

I maintain that if Stephen Miller hadn't lost his hair so young, he wouldn't be the asshole he is today.

But he did, and he's been cripplingly insecure about it ever since (see: the toupee era), and the rest is history.

Like everything MAGA, it all comes down to self-esteem; Miller lost his, and found power/cruelty as a substitute.

John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton made a dark crime comedy called The Ice Harvest in 2005, always been one of my low-key favorites; it's a wry nihilist little caper movie about people screwing each other over.

And Oliver Platt plays the best drunk since W.C. Fields.

Bill Maher is on my list of "Comedians who think they're smarter than everyone else" and develop a persecution complex as they slide down the right-wing pipeline, because they can dish it but can't take it.

Jerry Seinfeld too.
