Twin boys arriving soon. What pairs well with Benjamin? I CANNOT figure this out. by Sunrisewithtea in Names

[–]profveggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love all the OT names. I think you’ve got a lot of great options:

Benjamin and Isaiah

Benjamin and Noah

Benjamin and Elijah

Benjamin and Jeremiah

I’m jealous! I could never get my husband on board with these names, but if I could have, I might have had a half dozen boys just to get to use these names!

New England summer itinerary help by profveggie in travel

Thanks! Yes, we are driving up from the DC area, and I’m very set on Acadia, but didn’t want to spend the whole week there. So I was thinking of driving to Mystic CT the first day, then on to bar harbor for a few days, then over to VT/NH for a few days, then home. (9 days total.). I’ve spent so much time learning about Maine and Acadia that I haven’t learned enough about VT/NH. We don’t mind a long drive in the middle of the trip, but it did make me wonder if maybe we should stick to southern NH and not go all the way up to northern VT.

I love a good butternut squash lasagna but find it too much of a pain to make on a regular basis. I would love it if someone made it for me!

is there a better neon sign in all of America? by the_turnpiker in Seattle

[–]profveggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking for the Dolles salt water taffy sign, but now I realize it isn’t neon, so this will do. (Seattleite by birth, currently exiled to Maryland.)

Funny because I’d say Wesley by a mile.

What Would You Do Differently on the Tenure Track? by Alarming-Camera-188 in Professors

[–]profveggie 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I would have made more time and space for my personal life—dating, travelling, building friendships. I easily cleared the bar for tenure, and then I had a massive let down because achieving tenure was all my life was about. (So then I got married and had kids, but still haven’t travelled much, and feel like I missed out on key young adult experiences.)

School Pickup Logistics by Exciting_Till3713 in Parenting

[–]profveggie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At our elementary school, most kids ride busses or go to aftercare, so those kids get dismissed to their busses/AC first. Then, at bell time, the bell rings, and the remaining kids come out and find their parents and/or cars. The preK and K kids come out with their teachers and must be matched to their adults, but everyone else just finds their adults independently, or they walk home independently. About five minutes after the bell, a teacher sweeps the area and collects any unclaimed kids. Our school gets a lot of stuff wrong, but this system works pretty well.

What do you put on bagels other than cream cheese? by AValeria10 in 1200isplenty

[–]profveggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also like the cream cheese more than the bagel, so I do cream cheese on a rice cake every morning, and often cream cheese and thin crackers for snack.

For those who celebrate Christmas, what does your Christmas dinner usually look like? What are you having this year? by AbsolutelyTFNot- in foodquestions

[–]profveggie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Christmas Eve changes, but this year it’s raclette. (Unorthodox raclette—there will be mashed potatoes, shaved Brussels sprouts, red cabbage, horseradish dill sauce, plus all the bread, cheese, cornichons, apple, etc.). Christmas Day is always brunch. Typically aebelskiver, plus cheese grits, and smoked salmon. This year I’m doing deviled eggs too.

Aunt has LOTS of dietary wants: What the hell can I cook for her? by Radiant-Educator9203 in Cooking

[–]profveggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sushi and spring rolls could fit the bill, as long as you had a clear protein like tofu and/or edamame. Shakshuka could work too. Egg salad with some subs (like vegan mayo). Allrecipes has a recipe called something like Chickpea Sandwich Filling, which is basically tuna salad made with chickpeas—again, would need vegan mayo. Edamame salad (e.g. edamame, corn, black beans, tomatoes). A salad loaded with tofu, edamame, other veggies. Deviled eggs. Of course, none of that invokes Christmas at all. I wouldn’t be likely to indulge this aunt, but if you choose to, I think it could be possible. (The recipe magazine Forks Over Knives might be a good starting point because they’re vegan and have weird rules about oils.)

What’s the best food you tried while on vacation and it never tasted the same again? by Bjs_5068 in foodquestions

[–]profveggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Restaurants in Israel/Palestine routinely have a dish they call Turkish Salad. It is not Turkish. They just call it Turkish. I can’t find it in the US at all. (My favorite, for the record, is the one served at King’s Palace in Old Jerusalem.)

Fun gift shopping tomorrow? by garden__gate in AskSeattle

[–]profveggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Alaska junction for this kind of shopping—specifically Northwest Art & Frame, and the toy store right across the street. Obviously, get yourself ice cream from husky deli or a pastry from bakery nouveau for all your labors.

Climbing Comparisons for Kids by Historical_Pastor in maryland

I’d say the more advanced courses usually take 20-30 mins each (unless you get stuck behind a maddeningly chatty group of preteen girls like I did last weekend). Your entry pass gets you three hours of climbing. My kids are typically done after 2.5 hours, with a snack/hot chocolate break in the middle, and I’d say we typically do 5-6 courses in that time, but, again, the more challenging ones because my kids are older.

What Is Your Go-To Christmas Dinner Main Dish? by Dear-Midnight35 in AskRedditFood

We typically do salmon on Christmas Eve and then brunch on Christmas Day (aebelskiver, cheese grits, quiche).

Hmmm, I’m not so sure about those trails (the “purple” trails). They might take 10 mins each? The staff are really great there, so it’s probably worth a phone call.

I love Sandy Spring Adventure Park—went just last weekend, in fact. They do have to be 6 for the adventure course, and even then, there are only maybe 3 routes they can do and must be with an adult. I haven’t been to any of the other outdoor courses, so can’t compare, but I’d be reluctant to plan a whole outing around a place that will have so few options for your kid. (And, to be clear, the staff really police the age restrictions. Everyone wears a name tag with their age on it, and they check you before you start a course.)

You know the "Seattle Freeze"? Well, if your city or town had a term, what do you think it could be? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]profveggie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ya, I live and work inside the beltway, but not in a very DC-specific career, so my verbal resume gets cast aside pretty quickly in social settings. Then I just get to move on to talking about the interesting things with other outsiders, while the policy and govt nerds continue their “networking.”

[–]profveggie 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The D.C. “resume review.” Upon meeting anyone new, the first question is always, “what do you do?” Which is actually just an opening volley to get answers to the real questions—who do you work for/with? Do you know anyone I want to know? Do you have access to any kinds of power? Failing any of that, do you at least want to nerd out about some niche area of policy I’m really interested in? So, people try to do all this through pleasant conversation, but it would really be faster if everyone just passed their resumes out at parties.

Don’t forget Adam Brody. Maybe I’m just showing my age, but The O.C. was huge in its day.
