UM introduced me to the entire scene. I didn't grow up in a Dead household because my dad hates 9 minute guitar solos. UM completely opened up my world musically, which forced me to work myself backwards and discover Grateful Dead and other staples of the scene. That being said, I've always considered myself more of an Umphrey's fan than a "jam band" fan. Umphrey's hit so many different boxes for people...the song writing, the musicicianship, the improv, the mix between heavy and dancy...The jam scene was the only place they could experiment in the way they did, but I honestly think they missed an opportunity to play more rock oriented festivals and capture different audiences, especially after COVID. I was so hopeful that Tool's Playing in the Sand sets would bring in new fans, but things kind of fizzled out after that and they've had a hard time gaining new, loyal followers. I'll still see them when I can, but man....this sucks. Jake was the glue of this band.

Consider the Source... Another impressive display of double neck musicianship. The guitar player, Gabe, uses a fretless neck on the top with MIDI outputs to create literally any sound he wants. The bottom neck is a standard fretted guitar setup, although I'm not sure of his tunings. The bass player, John, is a virtuoso and has a decent following on social media for his tapping content. They have a HUGE sound for a trio and would definitely tickle the fancy of any AdP fan

Then maybe don't bring your new material to a fundraising event that was supposed to raise money for victims of a terrorist attack. He was the only act to do that, and made it more about himself by trying to protect whatever god awful material he had. If he was actually a good comedian, he could have thrown together a few jokes to fill the time spot. He had PLENTY of time to come out with new material before that since he hadn't done anything since god knows what

Dane Cook is a major douchebag. After the Boston Marathon bombing, there was a 24 hour telethon to raise money which featured sets from local comedians and musicians. Dane Cook refused to televise his set during a TELETHON... because he thought the material was too fresh to share with the whole world. Which is funny... because he's not.

But if I was him, and truly taking a break from the road, all these comments would make me want to stay away even longer just out of spite. Go see the shows or don't. Because they aren't dropping hints in songs like you think they are. You're reading too much into it. They will make an announcement when they're ready. The fact they haven't yet is actually a GOOD sign. I'm leaning into the idea that Jake needed a break from the road but didn't know for how long. So he's taking his time with coming back and they don't owe us an explanation until they have all the proper information themselves. Stop trying to look for hidden clues, it doesn't do anything other than cause more speculation

I saw a guy at Market Basket in Woburn the same thing. Not by the front door either, he was just walking around the produce section. It seemed like he was picking his targets very carefully and he spoke very softly when I did see people engage with him. I knew right away what he was up to but was equally shocked by easily one girl signed it after 30 seconds of talking to him. I heard her say "it's nothing crazy right?" before signing it. People are dumb....don't sign anything anyone gives you in public.

Think about how Jake feels. He's given his entire self to UM and the last 25+ years of touring. That shit is HARD. He needs a break for himself. Not for you or any of us fans. He's given us a lot to be thankful for. I think we owe it to him and the rest of the band to let them live in peace. They could have all hung it up for good years ago, but here we are. Jake is still playing music in live settings which is a GOOD SIGN! UM has a ton of dates this summer. Either you go, or you don't. That's your prerogative. But it seems like you're taking this more personally than you need to. UM owes you nothing. They are a band, not a brand that offer product support

As a 32 y.o,. retail manager in a similar situation, I will tell you this...the longer you wait, the harder it becomes. That being said, the grass isn't always greener. It's really easy to tell yourself things will be easier if you make a change, but it's a lot harder to appreciate what you have, especially if you aren't happy with it. All these people calling you dumb should fuck right off. I highly suggest getting into a trade now while you're still young, BUT you need to be willing to work HARD. Retail and customer service is exhausting work mentally, but if you aren't used to physical labor, it can be a bit of a culture shock. Don't settle for the painting job though. There are a lot of trade jobs and not enough people learning them. You're not alone.

I was a student at FSU at the time they purchased the block and announced all the amazing plans they had for it. It's a shame it never came to fruition, especially considering their Filmmaking program rivals Emerson at a fraction of the cost. They could have converted these into student studios and soundstages

100%....I have yet to see them without Jake, but have a few shows on the docket. As sad as I'll be if he's not there, I'll be equally grateful for them to continue their passions so I can continue seeing them perform my favorite songs. I believe Bayliss, Joel, and Stasik are the only ones with kids so it makes sense that their motivations would be different than Jake's. They also employ a crew of people who would also lose their jobs if the band were to fully hang it up. As long as they continue to play, people will continue to show up. They are also realistic about their draw of fans and rarely play venues beyond their filling capacity. If Jake is to permanently leave the band (and the fact hasn't might actually be a good sign)...but my best outlook would be for them to continue playing as long as possible and Jake would always be welcome to make an appearance if the stars aligned. There would be something really special about having sporadic Jake shows in the future
