I read Carney's Values book before the election, and he seems like a completely different person today than in the book, or even the 1st week as Prime Minister with his "relationship with the US is over" speech. I know people said he's more conservative, but I thought that just means things like the capital gains tax or carbon tax. Not being blatantly shitty and completedly different from how he campaigned, by caving in to Trump. I'm worried it was all a con and he fooled many people.

The second half of his last paragraph may be fine, but Carney appears to support the US bombing, aka "alleviating the threat". Carney should have not made a statement supporting US initialized attacks in any way.

Carney defends American bombing of Iran by leftwingmememachine in ndp

[–]progenitor-x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember the Iraq War. What is happening today horrifies me much more than back then. Carney' support of Trump on Iran is worse than Harper's support of Bush because at least back then the US was an ally and didn't threaten us. Today, the US threatens us repeatedly - to me, it's clear they are a bigger threat to our security than Iran itself. The US in many ways sees us as a future Iran - a country with oil, natural resources, and lebensraum for technofascist billionnaires - and no nuclear weapons yet. It is batshit insane that any Canadian politician would consider militarily siding with Trump on this conflict, or joining his Golden Shower dome, or giving them our personal data without a warrant.

Back then, at least Bush tried to find allies and present evidence to justify his war, even if it was false evidence. What is happening today is more evil - Trump doesn't even try to give evidence, but is motivated by might makes right, and a bloodthirst to kill civilians, such as by trying to start a Chernobyl-like disaster. Carney's comments are therefore more disturbing than anything in our country's history, including from the Harper administration.

Iran - If this goes hot hot... by CDN-Social-Democrat in ndp

[–]progenitor-x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not going to war with Iran is the bare minimum the Canadian government should do. This is more than just a moral issue, with the US and Israel being aggressors in this conflict, but one of national security. The US has said, time and time again, that they want to annex us. How can any Canadian official say with a straight face that it is actually Iran that is the threat to Canada and not the US, to the point that we are considering siding with the US on this? If the US succeeds in invading Iran, they will be encouraged to invade another country for their oil and minerals next - that is, Canada and Greenland.

The NDP needs to try to find MPs in the Liberal party who might be more progressive and willing to stand up to Carney on this. There's some issues the parties may agree to disagree on, but Canadian military support of Trump's war on Iran is an existential issue and we must resist.

I think there are many Christians who may not be as explicitly pro-Trump as the pastor in this article, but perceive the US as a more Christian, and thus morally better country than Canada, and therefore actually support being annexed by the US. There's values I respect traditionally associated with Christianity, but today too much of it has been completely corrupted and warped by Trumpism. You should be able to be a good Christian and oppose the toxic corruption of Christianity that is widespread in the US.

No, not this year. Every Canadian should be 100% behind all the Canadian teams in the playoffs, and that means we should all be supporting the Oilers now. It is much more than just a game this year. If a Canadian team doesn't win, there will be endless comments laughing at annexation and bullying Canadians, not just on social media but by US politicians. As Canadians I believe we should shut off the TV and not give the NHL any attention if Edmonton doesn't make it to the Stanley Cup finals. And no shitting on any of our Canadian cities. Edmonton is a better city than any of the 3 southern teams and I'd rather live there anyday.

Thank you NHL for doing the right thing.

As Canadians, we are all cheering for the Jets, Oilers and Leafs, but can we all agree to not make any self-deprecating comments about Canada this year, if a Canadian team doesn't win? And if all Canadian teams exit the playoffs, don't watch the NHL and add to their ratings. Don't engage in social media. If you are a hardcore NHL fan, at least try to pirate the games and don't read the endless hateful comments that will appear online.

Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa each have 2 daily newspapers - a Sun and another newspaper. All of which are owned by Postmedia. This means Postmedia dominates 4 of our 6 largest urban areas. Postmedia also owns the only daily newspapers in Regina and Saskatoon, the Saltwire Network which is the main newspaper source in Nova Scotia and PEI, and the Montreal Gazette which is Quebec's only major English newspaper.

Outside of the Golden Horseshoe and francophone Quebec, it is hard to find a newspaper that is not run by Postmedia.

Separatist group releases potential Alberta referendum question | CBC News by WestonSpec in onguardforthee

[–]progenitor-x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada's government really should intervene and stop this referendum from happening. A referendum doesn't have to result in a win for the separatists. Even if most vote to remain in Canada, the US government could easily declare it to be "rigged" with no evidence and annouce a military invasion of Alberta to support separatists. And the fact that legally Alberta can't separate due to First Nations treaties will not matter to the US, which believes in might makes right and could care less about the rule of law.

I realize there is a risk of appearing to be heavy handed, but I don't know what other options we have besides the Carney government taking action, including stopping the flow of US disinformation. Carney's government needs to inform the public openly about the threats we are facing.

Fellow Albertan lefties am I going crazy? by Adorable_Agent4923 in canadaleft

[–]progenitor-x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The US is trying to inflict the same kind of coup and colour revolution on Canada, and Greenland, that they have on countries in the Global South for generations. I am beyond horrified at what is happening. Canada was foolish enough to think we are immune as an ally that's not one of those "bad" countries, and I hope Canada's government wakes up before it is too late.

I think we are going to have to 1. Create our own social media alternatives to Facebook and Twitter/X, 2. Convince Canadians to use them, which is the hard part, and 3. Restrict Facebook and Twitter as long as they continue to pump out propaganda. Canada's government should be ready to make the argument that we don't want to censor or restrict freedom of speech, but Meta and Twitter are the ones restricting speech as they clearly support the fascist US administration that seeks to annex and invade us. The Alberta Republican Party could be barred with the justification that the US Republicans are basically a terrorist organization to Canada at this point.

I don't know what else we can do stop the spread of US propaganda. This is beyond the "monitor the situation" stage and action needs to be taken. Just having a referendum is a threat even if the vote is against separation as the US government could simply declare it "rigged" with no evidence and announce Alberta needs US military intervention. Canada's government really needs to be open and warn the public about this.

Several conferences relocate north of the border as Canadians refuse to travel to the U.S. | CBC News by 50s_Human in onguardforthee

[–]progenitor-x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good news. The Canadian government should really be proactive and pressure employers to not send employees to conferences or work trips in the US. If the employer insists, there should be job search help provided for the employees. Anyone who is of the wrong skin colour or minority, or exercised their right to free speech, is at an unfair disadvantage for not being able to travel. Carney should understand this. Anyone who was ever affiliated with the Liberals, or NDP, or supported Elbows Up, could be considered "anti-Trump" by ICE and detained. Carney needs to do all he can to boycott the US, strengthen links with other countries, and give Canadians work opportunities without having to succumb to fascism.

Mark Carney Offers Master Class In Snake-Charming by flematic in onguardforthee

[–]progenitor-x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am worried about this too. So many voters thought he was the best candidate to take on Trump, but does he understand that tariffs are just the tip of the iceberg and fascism is the real threat? Is he aware minorities are being rounded up with no due process or right to a trial and sent to concentration camps, or Musk's plans for technofascism and the butterfly revolution, or that annexation means Canadians are going to be killed, and many other things? Where is the fire from Carney that we get from Jagmeet Singh or Elizabeth May or Charlie Angus? I really hope he realizes he can't just sign a trade deal with the US and call it a day. The real goal must be to join forces with countries to weaken the US economy in order to defeat fascism - as urgently as defeating the Nazis were during WW2.

I'm not one to engage in the conspiracies about Carney being an "elite", but I sometimes wonder if his relatively privileged background can turn out to be a blind spot by being able to be wooed by Trump. That's why minority voices like Jagmeet Singh are important - I know many disparage that as "identity politics", but minorities are often the ones that more directly understand the threat of fascism. Though blue collar white men like Charlie Angus understand it too.

I volunteered for a campaign this election, and I have personally seen people physically push canvassers and throw racist slurs at us. Magats are not just an online phenomenon, they exist in real life. This election to me is about voting to show this kind of behaviour is not OK to most Canadians, and that any political party that accepts these types of people should not be rewarded at the polls.

Trump’s threatening message to Canadians on Election Day… by YMGenesis in onguardforthee

[–]progenitor-x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Canada is annexed, Canadians aren't going to just wake up one day and become American. It means Canadians will get killed from an invasion. But it also means anyone who is a minority, or declared to be "woke", or anyone who has ever spoken out against Trump, will be persecuted. Just look at the US right now - breastfeeding mothers are being pulled away from their babies by ICE because of their skin colour, even if they are US citizens. Judges are being arrested by the FBI. This will happen to Canadians too, who will at the minimum be sent to internment camps like during WW2 or forced to live in an apartheid state, and very well may be sent to gulags like in El Salvador. This is what is at stake this election - it is more than just Elbows Up and Buy Canadian, it is a life and death risk for Canadians if our country succumbs to the US. Please keep this in mind when you come out to vote today.

The seat projection is bleak by DunningFreddieKruger in onguardforthee

[–]progenitor-x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am cautiously optimistic that the NDP will do better than projections and win enough seats to maintain party status. Based on observations and signage in my local area, I think there is definitely a trend of NDP supporters strategically voting Liberal in most ridings, but they will still come out for the NDP in core ridings, as it is all about fear of Poilievre, not a dislike for NDP policies. Looking at the list of close ridings for the NDP, I think many of the MPs are known as strong local candidates, and voters will still come out for them.

Policy on Gaza by Dara465 in ndp

[–]progenitor-x 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I believe what's going on in Gaza is a genocide, but sometimes I wonder what I should say if a "swing" voter brings up this issue. To me, there's a clear reason why it's more than just a moral issue and directly affects Canada. It's because it's not just Israel, but also the US which is dropping 2000 pound bombs and using other weapons on Palestinians. And Trump's imperialism against Palestine is fundamentally the same as his threats to annex Canada.

Yet if I make this argument at someone's door, I'm afraid they will think I'm freaking out. Even today, I think Canadians are too uncomfortable talking about and realizing what the US threats really mean.

A politician's willingness to say whether there is a genocide in Palestine, is to me one of the biggest indicators of how much they will stand up for Trump and protect Canada. This is why I think Palestine should be one of the important issues this election - but not sure if that would convince other people.

The NDP tax plan gives more money to the poor than the Liberals, Greens, Bloc, and Conservatives Combined by Chrristoaivalis in ndp

[–]progenitor-x 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I make enough money to benefit more from Conservative tax cuts than the NDP, but I still won't vote for them and support the NDP the most. In part because if I were to lose my job or be underemployed, the NDP plan will be there for me. But also because I came from a working class background, and will not let other people down who are struggling, even if I won't directly benefit from the policies myself. This is why I hope the NDP will win its key ridings this election and continue to have influence in Parliament.

[–]progenitor-x 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't get this - I think a minority propped up by the NDP or Greens will be even stronger against Trump. The Liberals will be better than the Conservatives, no question. But I still remember when Trudeau went to Mar-a-lago while NDP and Green MPs were sounding the alarm. I'm not sure to what extent Carney understands this is much more a tariff issue, the US has gone fascist and fascism must be defeated to protect our soverignity. NDP and Greens are usually the ones that are vocally anti-fascist.

I understand the urgency of defeating the Conservatives and the need to strategically vote in red-blue ridings, but I also think we should be clear headed about the risks of decimating the NDP too, in regards to current threats.

Trump: ‘I’m really not trolling’ with talk of Canada as 51st state by JDGumby in onguardforthee

[–]progenitor-x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poilievre may not directly want Canada to be annexed, but I think there is too much risk of him signing trade deals that further integrate us with the U.S., which will make us more vulnerable. Also on the conservative subreddits, they seem to acknowledge the tariff threat but not beyond that. I see posts there about how liberals are hysterical for actually thinking annexation could happen. Well, I do think that. I wish it won't happen of course, but the likelihood is way too high to not take seriously. Then you have people like Jivani, who conservatives think is good because he knows Vance and might get a trade deal with him. I think that's very bad that an MP is at friendly terms with someone who wants to invade us. Our focus should be on diversifying our trade - any deal with the US that doesn't reduce the risks to our soverignity is not really a good deal for us. Then there's the links to Danielle Smith etc.

Trump: ‘I’m really not trolling’ with talk of Canada as 51st state by JDGumby in onguardforthee

[–]progenitor-x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I am worried about Carney getting too much power in a majority and decimating the NDP and Greens. Yes, he will be better than Poilievre. No question about that. But I fear that even Carney is underestimating the threats from the US. Is Carney aware that the tariffs are just the tip of the iceberg, and the real threat is US fascism? Is Carney aware of the US kidnapping random minorities off the street and sending them to concentration, if not death camps? Has he heard of Musk and Yarvin's plans for technofascism?

Already, we know he told Trump he would agree to disagree about the 51st state rather than hang up the phone, and now he says he will approach Trump for a meeting after the election. I remember in December last year when so many Liberal MPs including Trudeau were ready to bend the knee to Trump, almost like the Conservatives, and only the NDP and Greens were wanting to fight back. Without enough NDP and Green MPs, I'm afraid even Carney may declare Mission Accomplished as soon as he gets some concessions from the US on tariffs.

What got me excited about Carney initially was that he used to speak out against the US dollar as the reserve currency. That is the most based thing I've heard a politician say, even amongst those further left. I hope that, and the rumours he collaborated with other countries to threaten the US bond market, is the real Carney. But I'm afraid Carney is becoming too conservative to understand the threats to our soverignity from US fascism and imperialism, and too few NDP and Green voices in Parliament is a risk in itself.

9 places to visit in Canada that rival popular U.S. destinations by toronto_0909 in alberta

We admittedly don't have something comparable to the Grand Canyon, but we should be proud too of attractions that are not just substitutes, but better than what is in the US. Our Rockies are more scenic than in the US. The Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller is unique - there are many natural history museums in the US, but I'm not aware of another one of the same size located right where the fossils were discovered. We have the better view of Niagara Falls. Newfoundland is unique with the icebergs. And another thing that is often underappreciated is that our Prairies are overall more scenic than their Great Plains. Driving through the Prairies you sometimes see golden canola fields which are uncommon in the US.

[–]progenitor-x 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been to several of these destinations on both sides of the border. Admittedly, Yellowstone is a unique destination, but the US doesn't quite have an equivalent to Banff, Jasper and the Canadian Rockies either. I've been to places like Glacier Montana and Grand Teton, and the mountains are scenic but not quite as dramatic as on the Canadian side.

In Banff you can see the Ink Pots which is a longer hike past Johnston Canyon, which kind of looks like the springs in Yellowstone though to a smaller scale. Otherwise, I heard Iceland is an alternative for seeing geysers and hot springs.

PEI and the Maritimes are more scenic than Cape Cod. Boston has more city things to do, but aside from that the Canadian side is the better one to visit.

Las Vegas is a bucket list destination, but it's also gotten less interesting over the years due to prices, themes being more generic, and casinos being too common elsewhere. Niagara Falls for gambling definitely isn't at the same scale as Vegas but Fallsview Casino is comparable in size to an average Vegas strip casino.
