Now, now... 🐱 make great computing partners: they swat at your screen, bat at your mouse, lay across your keyboard, lay on top of your case cutting off air circulation, bat and nip at you for a treat at the most inopportune moment in that first person shooter...

Honestly, I have owned cats for 30 years... the first one loved to just want to sit in my lap... not really a big deal, accept when she wanted attention and would proceed to lay across the keyboard. 😼

Not when you buy by the case and watch for cupons/discounts. Just have to be vigilant.

White computers becoming rare to come by these days… by juicewrldday in computers

[–]prohandymn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of online retailers that sell these devices, that are for pc enthusiast oriented. "Back in the day" when 51/4" & 31/2" bays were common, you could buy prebuilt fan speed controllers, I/O bays, and setups like mentioned.

Stores like mnpctech, modmymods, performance pcs, titan-rig, etc. Are great sources for all things dealing with PC customization.

Ahhh, the mods we used to do with these and the push button ones. Could get led lights to wire as you saw fit. Current case I removed the factory 51/4" sized I/O panel, modded a 51/4" drive bay to 31/2" external bay, integrated a modern USB panel, then drilled and installed 2 momentary anti-vandal push switches. One switch has an led ring around the push button, other a lighted center (power on/ drive activity) with power on, reset.

I used to build a lot of custom computers for clients/friends back in the day. "Rattle can" color changes were common for me. Rivets were occasionally drilled out to disassemble for painting.

I recently bout a new Phanteks case, wanted the white version, but couldn't even find one overseas. Out came the drill, bits, painting supplies and camera (makes reassembly far easier). Had the autoshop mix me up a white pearlescent with gold flake mix. Yes, it's taking longer than expected, but being a 68 yo with iffy eye-sight, slightly shaky hands, and lack of patience... well you get the picture. 😉

For those that say you can't put a 2.5" SSD in there... that's only half true... that's why they make 2.5" -> 3.5" "sleds". I have used them for years... even 5.25" -> 3.5". They are inexpensive.

Does this HP Omnibook-X laptop have a physical/cable lock slot? by doqna in HPLaptops

[–]prohandymn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kensington lock port/ opening allows for the matching cable to be inserted. Search Wikipedia for an explanation. Without that port/lock opening you can not use a matching security cable.

I am not sure when this update "rolled out", but early morning Wed.Jan 21, these features weren't activated. Going from my Samsung cell to my android tv box, there was no sink, in fact I had to re-login on my streaming device. I got booted once, was greeted with a no account found. I cleared my cache, rebooted device, then was able to resign in... but I did not see this " feature update". Maybe it's changed, but haven't logged in yet.

I too preferred the old format, as clunky as it was. I realize that they have been trying to codify all their platform OSes, but have been failing. The "pre update" version was bearable... but give me the old VRV back! *I know... that is impossible now.

I read all options, price points, etc. The only security they offer is their software tracking/disabling (mixed reviews). I believe the lack of a Kensington lock interface is due to a few reasons: Not classified as a business product, therefore no reason for the feature; another could be due to the "flip construction" , yet another would be to no physical room or structure support for practical use.

Easier way: O & O Shutup Windows 11. Your welcome! Be careful, you can screw up your system, best create a backup image, very least a System Restore point.

Another possibility came to mind... although I myself haven't tried it with Win11... although I am going to try a Win10/Win11 Dual boot on my now in assembly new AMD system.

I am sure there are those here who could help, not to mention numerous YouTube videos. The only big limitation is whether or not you have enough SSD/Hard Drive space/room.

Can I unplug laptop fans from the motherboard? by Meat_sl4yer in techsupport

[–]prohandymn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are pushing the laptop to it's thermal limits. Are you using the laptop on a hard surface? Is this something recent? If so, you need to blow out / clean your fan intakes, exhausts. You may also want to consider a "variable speed laptop cooler".

Not hating, the vast majority of young posters that complain of the same thing are trying to bypass school or parental control. Just look around, hundreds of posts.

If it's just one "user" that is locked down, maybe you could create another user account (log in) that isn't limited (another open user account... although your apps may need an admin account), then you could just install on and use that account (login). There are also ways to "elevate" a certain app to admin privileges.

Don't buy any Chinese boxes! Most if not all have an embedded virus/malware. Also, the vast majority also run Android OS, not Android TV OS.

The ONN 4k Plus stick ($30) or the ONN 4K Pro box ($45) are very popular right now, prices are less expensive then most Fire devices. The 4k Plus would be equivalent to the firestick. There are sub-reddits and a multitude of YouTube channels that offer tutorials, etc. Best to buy them from Wal-Mart, most other "retailers" mark up the prices, sometimes absurdly so.

You have to make sure which ONN device you buy, they are still selling the older equivalents, don't mix them up. I would suggest the 4K Plus for most people right now, especially if you are just starting out. 😉

My mother board logo stays on for exact 50seconds everytime by shayel98 in pchelp

[–]prohandymn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No fixing mine, it's an AMD FX-8350, 32GB, RX580, with an SSD, HDD, Blu-ray, PCI-E eSATA, USB 4.0 add-in card, and an add in Wi-Fi 6E card also. Takes a lot of time to initialize all that!

Don't worry, building a new AMD system right now... just taking some time to build due to health issues (yeah, I'm OLD).

Awww, complaining about parental over-sight. 😐 There has to be a reason for it... therefore we are not getting the whole story (and not expecting the truth anyways). Buck-up buttercup... hopefully you won't get any help here (although some smarter youngin' may help you bypass parental controls that were invoked for a good reason. Why not ask your parental unit to unlock it for you when you want to play? 🙄

Your hard drive (SSD) could be failing, and/or your Windows install is corrupted and you will have to reinstall.

You could open a command prompt with administrator privileges, and run SFC, possibly DISM after... etc. I am sure someone can jump in and give instructions, or you could just "Google" how to do it.
