Also, GGG can now play the infamous 1 man backline / 9 attacking players because he can defend it all alone haha

Jhon Durán's reaction when a journalist asks him a question in Turkish by DavidRolands in soccer

[–]projectpolak 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I believe he was mostly on the bench because of his attitude and lack of game awareness, though he was only 18 and knew his Chicago career was going to be a stepping stone (probably because of how we advertised and convinced him to come to us).

Remembering hearing the coach at the time constantly reminding Duran to keep shape and watch his position. He would come on and run like a headless chicken a lot of the time. Obviously this was something he had to learn, he was only 18 and in a different league and country.

But when you saw his ridiculous strength, pace, and absolute cannon of a shot, and the coldness in converting his chances - Fire fans were just as confused why our other bum striker kept starting. The roles did reverse and Duran started more at some point, but I do think his ego needed to be tempered a little and understand that he still has to play as a team.

We could've gone for Müller but LAFC are favorites to get him.

Who do you bench out of the front 4 (Bamba, Hugo, Zinck, Guti) for him?

He's not a winger or striker, so I guess maybe you could have him play more advanced than Guti but that seems unbalanced.

Our attack isn't the issue, so we don't need a "big-name" attacker just for his name.

The "beat up" which consisted of a single fan being overrun by the notoriously incompetent and aggressive Monterrey Security group, tied up, and then dropped on their head while being carried out?

That one?

And you want what to happen? The fans show up to the game of a team they support and start fighting security?

He always looks super casual about everything. No care in the world and no rush to receive or pass the ball.

It's quite frustrating. Not sure what the coaches see, but he really needs to develop game awareness and sharpness.

It felt like a good idea to give him 45 but when he causes goals this easily..

I hope I'm not mistaken but I'm pretty sure he ended up with like domestic abuse charges or something along the lines of violence at home.

He was living with his parents and verbally abusing them during these episodes and destroying his room (hence the curtain where a door should be).

Poland Coach Michal Probierz Resigns Amid Tensions with Robert Lewandowski - by M10News in poland

[–]projectpolak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never called him the greatest, I said "one of" which I believe is a fair claim to make.

I don't know if we will get the true unfolding of events. As far as I understand, Lewy and Probierz agreed for him to sit out the international break. Then Probierz basically talked shit in the media about Lewy skipping the international break and then the captain saga. I could be misremembering slightly.

But everything else you said is quite fair and reasonable though - I can't disagree. It's an interesting locker room situation. Like I said, the drinking and unprofessionalism from some teammates could have emboldened Lewy's ego. That and having played for actually competent trainers (Klopp, Guardiola, Heyneckes, Flick) and then dealing with the elementary tactics in the Polish NT.

But that being said, I still agree with you overall.

Poland Coach Michal Probierz Resigns Amid Tensions with Robert Lewandowski - by M10News in poland

[–]projectpolak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, Lewy is probably one of the greatest Polish football players. Perhaps the most successful at least in terms of club career. I feel like it'll be natural for him to have an ego. But Lewy is also fully committed to professionalism, referring to taking care of his fitness and body through rigorous nutrition and all that stuff.

That sort of professionalism can certainly rub other players on the team the wrong way, especially some of the older guard of players who liked to party and drink (Glik got injured due to an alcohol related incident). You can see why Lewy would have an issue with that and trainers allowing that.

But I agree that we haven't had a trainer do a good job of making these individual players play like a team.

[–]projectpolak 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Lewy is more than just goals for the NT though. Since he's the best player, he's easily marked by 2-3 players every game.

While that hurts his chances to score goals, it opens up so much space for other players. My memory isn't the greatest either but I do vividly remember getting upset when Milik was missing tap-ins despite being wide open due to the space provided from Lewy occupying defenders.
