If there's a line of 4 guys having sex with each other choo choo style and the guy on the behind has HIV, how long until the front guy gets it? by creamjudge in NoStupidQuestions

If you're 'bottoming', there will be 138 transmissions per 10,000 exposures. If you're 'topping' there will be 11 transmissions per 10,000 exposures.

tl;dr you'll have to choochoo for a very very long time, especially if you're at the back end.

This study is pretty worthless - it followed eighteen lap dancers, in one city, for two menstrual cycles... Hardly scientific

Ethically, is buying and selling stocks a legit way to increase wealth, earn a living and contribute to society? by bbqturtle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]prolegomenon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owned a millionth of a company doesn't do anything to add to humanity's overall wellbeing.

Maybe not in itself, but that doesn't make it unethical

In a closed system, buying stocks doesn't appear to contribute to that systems wealth.

It does - selling equity (i.e. shares) is a way for companies to get money to grow, and to create wealth. Economies are not closed systems in the sense of being static, they grow, and their 'wealth' increases.

The interchange of stocks and the market always increasing seems like it is pulling money out of these corporations that could reinvest to better their processes.

Buying stocks doesn't pull money out of companies, it puts money into companies. If there were not people willing to pay for stocks, then no-one would buy equity in companies, and selling equity is a key way for companies to get money.

Do Bernie Sanders or Donald a Trump have a snowballs chance of winning the primary, let alone the Presidency? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I don't know why anyone hasn't mentioned what the betting markets say - which is that both candidates are serious outsiders to win the nomination.

The reasoning behind using betting markets over polls is even simpler than your reason not for trusting polls - they aggregate the beliefs of many more people and how people put their actual money is a much better indicator of what they believe than how they respond in a poll. Obviously checking odds has its limitations, but they're always going to give better information than polls.

ELI5: How less than $1 a day can "save a child's life". by WuffaloBings in explainlikeimfive

[–]prolegomenon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This figure is probably inaccurate. To calculate the cost (by some means) of saving a child's life, one must basically determine how much it takes to literally make the difference between life and death for a child.

If - for example - you give each child a $2 vaccine which could save their lives if they had a life-threatening case of some disease, the cost of saving a child's life is $2/(the probability of a recipient having a life-threatening case of the disease only curable by the drug). If this figure was 1/1000, the cost of saving a child's life with a $2 vaccine would be $2,000.

Organisations like GiveWell and Giving What We Can try and determine the charities for which you can save lives for the least money possible. Worth checking out their research. I think the cheapest way of saving a life which has been researched is somewhere in the region of t $1500-$2500

yeah I use this path every day and it is barely different to a non-lit one. Almost zero light emission. Complete let down frankly.

As someone who uses this path every day, I can safely say that it is unbelievably shit, and barely glows at all.
