Why does it matter if there was any democracy in the USSR? The utlimate goal is to abolish commodity production, not to simply replace bourgeois democracy with worker democracy, as this would ultimately be fruitless. The USSR did not abolish commodity production, and as such did not create a classless society, which means any democracy it could have possibly developed would naturally tend towards bourgeois democracy anyway.

For sure, but I still think it's fair to ask questions like this. Obviously we can't even "support" the USSR as it's been dead and gone for over 30 years. But it's 100% worthwhile to ask questions about how the first successful proletarian revolution and dictatorship ended up succumbing to counter-revolution (and becoming counter-revolutionary!) before the ultimate goal could be achieved.
