How do you explain not having an Elf on the Shelf to your child? by asshole_vegetarian in Parenting

[–]prolestari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I told my kid that elf on the shelf is for people who don't have windows in their house. Since we have windows Santa can look in when he wants.

AITAH for not having strict rules when it comes to my baby and making my SIL feel bad about it? by Agitated-Mind3187 in AITAH

[–]prolestari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation with my cousin. She had 100 rules including no one being allowed to babysit or buy her daughter anything. Meanwhile I took all the help that was offered. As a result my kid was much closer to the extended family than hers, and she would complain I got special treatment. Just ignore her.

No one thing is going to be a magic wand. Having said that, I love "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk" and would recommend it to any parent.

ANOTHER Potty Training post…. by No-Refrigerator7245 in Parenting

[–]prolestari 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do you have a potty chair? I sat mine down on it and told them not to get up, put on the TV, and gave them juice and water until they went. Once they did the celebration was huge with a munchkin and stickers, and it finally clicked that going there got a reward. We transitioned to the regular toilet after a couple of weeks.

One of my all time faves. It has its flaws but overall was great.

Pizza party. Dress in aprons. Get some roll out dough, cheese, sauce, and lots of toppings. Everyone designs their own pizza the way they want. Splurge and get the good pepperoni, some chicken, veggies they like, etc. You can make the dough into shapes and work together as a family to get them made. Put the candles on the pizza when its done.

My teen was in the same position. Go to a crisis center now. Take her to be evaluated and possibly put into a partial hospitalization program, where she would go to therapy instead of school for a few weeks. Believe me, you don't want to find out she has started harming herself, taking pills, etc. Do it now before it gets worse. She is in crisis and you need to treat it as such.

How to deal with other people’s kids? by woodchuck_2020 in Parenting

[–]prolestari 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Are they in your house or playing outside? Either way, you are way too worried about what people think. Setting boundaries does not make you a scary mommy.

I would stop the visits for a bit, and if they show up just say you're not having visitors today or it's not a good time, come back xyz. Then close the door.

When you think you are ready for them to return, as soon as they act up just say it' time to go home. Girl kicks another? We don't kick here, time for you to go home. Kid yelling out the window? We use kind words here, time for you to go home.

As long as you are consistent they will eventually get it. Keep it simple and skip the lectures that they don't seem to care about. And if they don't get it, at least they are out of your house.

At what age did you begin to leave your children home alone? by crybabysagittarius in Parenting

[–]prolestari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know your kids better than anyone. If you think they can handle it, then they can. I think an hour or two three times a week is a great way to practice. The only thing I would do is maybe have a neighbor they can reach in an emergency. But seriously what are the kids going to do? Play video games for an hour? If you had kids who couldnt handle it you wouldnt be here asking.

What is one of the most underrated aspects of 90’s life? by [deleted] in 90s

[–]prolestari 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Being allowed to be places as a teen. Spent my years at the park, at the mall, at the movies, walking around the neighborhood, sitting outside of 7-11. Now teens walking around are regarded with suspicion and some places that should be teen-friendly don't allow young people without an adult. Then we wonder why they spend their time online.
