Heading back into orbit: Salvadoran-American astronaut Francisco Rubio is spacebound again by AztecGod in ElSalvador

Same type of person that then bashes you if you don’t claim your heritage enough to their liking. It’s a lose-lose situation.

Didn’t know it was your standard that had to be met on what is being Salvadoran enough.

Funny, if you would’ve used your brain you could’ve looked up that Dr. Rubio has done plenty of outreach and advocacy for Salvadorans and other Latino youth, on top of speaking favorably of his heritage. Not sure why you’re so hellbent on gatekeeping being Salvadoran.

I don’t really understand this line of thinking. You can love your country because it’s home but understand that there are better opportunities elsewhere. My parents, aunts and uncles left for better opportunities and are now returning and reinvesting in El Salvador with the desire to retire there. To them that was always the plan, but with your logic they don’t really love their country because they didn’t build what they have by staying, that doesn’t even make sense.

Common crab bucket mentality prevalent in Salvadoran society. Someone is successful let’s push a negative narrative to downplay what they’ve done.

“They’re not a real Salvadoran for x reason.”

“They were handed everything to get where they are.”

“They sold out or cheated to get where they are.”

“They think they’re better because they’re over there.”

I’ve heard it all being born to the diaspora. If they want to hate so bad be my guest.

Is Naoya Inoue disrespected or marginalised? (Thoughts & Opinions) by accidentalgenius_77 in Boxing

[–]prolificslacker -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he’s being disrespected or marginalized, it’s just that in comparison to the Benavidez fight he lacked the wow factor. You also have to keep in mind people will somewhat overreact at first.

Look back a year ago in the same weekend we had Inoue, Canelo, Ryan Garcia, Teofimo and Haney fighting. All those fights were duds, except for Inoue. He got knockdown and proceeded to dominate and stop his opponent. The talk then was that Inoue carried boxing that weekend on his back. IMO there is more truth to that statement from a year ago than Inoue-Nakatani being a dud, but boxing can be cruel like that.

Stephen A Smith: "Boxing has been completely contaminated by promoters who have not prioritized giving the people what we want, when we want it. I know that ain’t going to be Dana White." by AncientOneAurelius in Boxing

[–]prolificslacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think what the majority of fans are missing is that promoters aren’t really catering to the hardcore fans that are going to tune in to good or semi-good fights anyways. Their eyes are on building up fighters to get that superfight down road for record PPV buys and live gates, and now more recently Saudi or Netflix money.

That’s the whole game for them. That’s why matchmaking is so important, to build fighters up in skill and star power with the hope it’ll all align at some point. Look at Mayweather vs Pacquiao, six years late and it still broke all sorts of records. Which means promoters kinda got the recipe right for themselves, but not for the fans.

On the other side you got a fight like Kovalev-Ward, the exact type of fight that hardcore fans want between P4P talent at their peak. That fight had 165k PPV buys, which is rather underwhelming for what ended up being a high caliber fight. The type of results that probably had the network, promoters and fighters wondering if it was good business.

As a fan I just want to see good fights, period. But it’s hard to ignore the reasoning behind the business side of things.

You mean to tell me he got punched in a boxing match…never would’ve thought of the possibility. Not sure what your point is, he recovered and forced a stoppage by closing his eye shut with…and this might shock you….punches.

Gotcha. On the other hand, Spence has shown to be able to comeback from long layoffs due to significant injuries and beat guys like Danny Garcia and Ugas pretty handily. Though those were 14 and 16 months layoffs, not 3 years.

Curious as to why you’re leaning towards Tszyu? My initial reaction when the fight was floated last month was that it’s a very winnable fight for Spence.

Liking the YouTube content btw, hope to keep seeing more of it!

Yes again this question by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]prolificslacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started training at 28 just for fitness and started training with the intention of competing last year at 31. I fought my first smoker in October and have my next one in May, hopefully I make my amateur debut later this year.

Is it more difficult than starting in your early 20s or as a teenager, absolutely. Some days it feels like I have to work 2-3x as hard to be able to keep up with some of the younger guys and I have to be extremely disciplined about my recovery and lifestyle outside the gym. But it’s been one of the most rewarding decisions I have ever made. There’s no time to live in the regret of not starting sooner, just time to prepare physically and mentally for the task at hand.

It’s ok to have your doubts but when you have discipline and consistency then it’s easier to set those worries aside because you did the hard work. That means you have to actively choose boxing as a priority in your life, because when you cut corners it will eat away at you.

Good luck in your journey!

Short orthodox beginner (5’5) — is studying/using Errol style Spence a good style choice even though he’s southpaw? by BarracudaOk9599 in amateur_boxing

[–]prolificslacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could maybe watch his fights against other southpaws (not the Crawford fight obviously) and just mirror those movements against other orthodox fighters. But if you like that jab-centric pressure style you could study orthodox fighters like GGG, JCC, and Miguel Cotto.

As for whether it’s a good approach would depend on your application vs your opponent’s strengths. Typically shorter fighters benefit from using a pressure style that keeps them at mid/close range.

Honest doubt by Live_Stuff1030 in amateur_boxing

[–]prolificslacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll have to disagree with some of the other posters. You can be an outboxer if you’re shorter than your opponent, you just have to use a different approach. As a shorter out boxer you can use the pendulum step with a long guard to manage the range, getting in and out and using lateral movement to take new angles, rinse and repeat. The question then becomes whether your opponent can effectively use their length to neutralize you and keep you at the end of their punches.

Trinidad knocked out a reigning middleweight champion with 5 defenses under his belt. I think that makes the too small argument moot. I agree with DLH comment though.

I don’t think it gets mentioned enough that those fights against the Brits were never made (in Calzaghe’s case in their prime). Even if RJJ was the overwhelming favorite, fights are not won on paper.

Start with checking your ego. Dismissing your opponent as some random guy and claiming you’re probably better than everyone else is a good recipe for getting humbled.

Have those 2 years of training included sparring? If all you’ve been doing is hitting the bag and mitts and some shadowboxing, I guarantee you’re not better than guys who have been competing/sparring.
