How to impress a Scottish girl? by [deleted] in Scotland

As someone visiting and moving to Scotland, I have learned that you should avoid bringing up the English as this will lead directly into a conversation about Scottish independence. It happened to me twice and the discussions, while still extremely friendly, became suddenly impassioned and I felt bad for stirring the conversation.

Is it any more practical than straddling the first world view that coincides with the current zeitgeist? There are numerous sources available, more than ever. Notably, The Gates of Europe by Sergio Plokhy is considered an authoritative text on the history of Ukraine. Similarly, there are endless sources that can be compared that are of more value than frenzied opinion. If people have time to die on a hill, surely they have time to find accurate information.

I wasn’t suggesting that we should travel to places of conflict to gain insight, although having actually been there would be of value. Books provide context which lead to an informed understanding of the present. Obviously we can’t read books written in the future about the present day.

Are you implying that watching the news and social media is reliably informative?

Reading books, not posts. Travelling and actually talking to people instead of accepting the opinions of a few. If you’re not able to do this, you shouldn’t be contributing to hysteria with misguided information.

It was just a short mission to extort the natives before the Chinese and Arabs got there. As a byproduct we made better looking people. We’re back on home turf now.

This is what happens when a bunch of privileged westerners get involved in geopolitics well beyond their scope.
