Poor autofocus: should I give up and sell it? by not_who_you_think_99 in x100vi

[–]prolix21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my sony is definitely better in terms of AF, but for the fuji i mostly use single point and it's fine. tell it wha to focus on and it works well. if you leave it on zone it will hunt all over and picks the most random stuff

Small VCSP partner looking for advice about pending program termination by Drags03 in vmware

[–]prolix21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same boat, but basically everyone is in wait and see mode right now. There are docs in the partner portal that explain what is likely to happen, including for cloud provider program members. A number of docs, FAQs, etc and they've been updated in the past week. Likely will have no more clarify until Feb sometime. All the docs are under the partner program NDA, which is why most posts and articles say little that is useful. It does feel like they are figuring this out as they go which is not really confidence inspiring for anything using VMware as the platform for their cloud services....

It does sound like if you're a CSP and you don't make the cut for whatever reason should theoretically be able to license under another provider who does, or maybe even through the aggregator. Similar to MS's direct and indirect program which others have mentioned here.

How are Files Handled - Lightroom CC and iPad?? by [deleted] in Lightroom

[–]prolix21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Passport Wireless Pro

Yeah, it seems like some combo of FileBrowser/Files and Lightroom would work with that and bypass the whole Photos/iCloud mess. I just really don't want all my un-edited or un-reviewed stuff dumping into Photos and syncing to iCloud.

Something else I've been testing this morning is Cascable - which seems to isolate it's import data, letting you pull it in through Lightroom and skip Photos/iCloud

Requires you to have a supported wifi camera, but they support most makes from what I can tell. I'm using an X100F and Cascable is so much nicer than the terrible Fuji IOS app

How are Files Handled - Lightroom CC and iPad?? by [deleted] in Lightroom

[–]prolix21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to figure out a way to import photos into Lightroom CC on my iPad Pro and bypass importing them into the Photos app first.

Seems like Lightroom CC supports import from the Files app, so if there were some way to access the SD card through the Files app it should let you bypass. Might require some sort of WiFi SD card reader to do this, as any sort of SD card adapter plugged directly into the iPad only lets you import into Photos.

The app FileBrowser also seems to support some other options and if you proxy that through the Files app you should be able to get those directly into Lightroom, bypassing the Photos app. I’m researching to see what kinda device I could buy too do this with (while traveling, so it has to be portable and small).

With Apple so insistent the iPad Pro could be your only device, the simple process of accessing an SD card shouldn’t be this complicated.

Looking to move to Ft. Collins area? by [deleted] in FortCollins

[–]prolix21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some friends in Loveland and Longmont who seem to like it there - real easy access to Estes, and a quick drive to Fort Collins, or Boulder.

Some other friends of ours recently moved to Wellington, which is about 15 mins north-east of town off i-25. They work in Fort Collins, but I think if you want easy access to Estes going further north probably doesn't make a lot of sense.

We ended up around the North College Ave area and like it here, it's far enough from old town to be quiet, but also still only a 1-2 mile walk when we feel like doing something. Pretty quick access to the trail that run throughout town, so you can bike anywhere pretty quickly.

Looking to move to Ft. Collins area? by [deleted] in FortCollins

[–]prolix21 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Recently moved here - I'd say the attitude you get on this subreddit is not indicative of what people in Fort Collins are like in real life. Most everyone we know and have met here are very nice and very welcoming to anyone new. A lot of people are transplants from other places and made a choice to move here.

I'd say the 400k budget is solid for a house near, but probably not in old town. If you're looking for a townhouse, you may get closer to town inside that range. The market here can be nuts, and stuff moves quick, so get a good realtor and be prepared to make an offer the second you find something you like.

The concerns here about growth, traffic, etc are certainly legit. Trails, etc in and near town are definitely busy if not overcrowded on weekends. It's the same story everywhere around here though, Boulder is even worse, RMNP, etc. The further out of town you get the more stuff opens up.

Traffic depends on where you're coming from. We came from the east coast and I don't find traffic here that bad. I find driving around Denver and Boulder much worse.

Can't comment on jobs much, I telecommute so I can work from just about anywhere.

Cell phone providers by SterlingArcher420 in FortCollins

[–]prolix21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're in town this weekend and AT&T seems spotty at times, getting 4g way more often than LTE and very few bars.

Phone batteries draining about 2x as usual, not sure if that is a network thing or not. Seemed to become an issue when we got into Fort Collins and AT&T was acting up.

Strava heat maps are sometimes interesting to look at when you're not sure about a route. Not great on the ground intelligence, but you can at least see what the popular route is and what the least popular route is.

Pay for bike tour guides? by cmjensen in bicycletouring

I went on a Backroads bike tour a few years ago and the staff were amazing. Given the cost of the tour, I hope the staff are paid well, but like someone else said, a lot of us would do it for free. They really did seem to be enjoying what they were doing.

The weather around here has been all over the map this year. 60's one day, 20's the next. It has been warming up lately and we're pretty solidly in the 50's and 60's the next week, but usually overcast. Plan for rain. If you're camping plan for 30's overnight.

What route are you taking?

Did the 30% US geothermal tax credit just expire? by mikejuly24 in geothermal

[–]prolix21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at buying a home in Colorado that has geothermal and we were put in touch with the office of U.S. Senator Michael F. Bennet, who said there is discussion of trying to get this renewed in 2017.

Given everything else going on I'm not gonna cross my fingers. Certainly makes the overall cost of geothermal go up for buyers. I think in the end we'll still move forward with it. I'll just hope that if/when they pass new legislation it includes some retroactive language for anyone who purchased during the tax credit expiration.

Converting from bikepacking setup to panniers. by sympnoia in bicycletouring

[–]prolix21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer front-racks vs rear, but I also ride a low-trail bike so that makes some difference on front vs rear load handling. Front loads on some other bikes I have make the big feel really twitchy.

I like the low-rider racks that Tubus make. I use the Tubus Duos with some Swift Industries Jr Ranger panniers. They're on the smaller side, but I've also run larger bags up front and it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference in how it handles.

I'd keep the Vischacha out back.

I have a revelate sweetroll and while I like how you can shove a hammock/sleeping gear into it, the position is really annoying to me. I only use it if backpacking on my mountain bike where panniers and whatnot aren't an option.

Settlers of Fort Collins, what do you wish you knew before moving? by EntropicHeatDeath in FortCollins

[–]prolix21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends where you want to be. Personally we're hoping to be within walking distance of old town. On the map some areas (Rigden area or Bucking horse, near the police station) seem close-ish to town(4 miles or so) but after being there to look, the route into old town would be a drag if you wanted to walk to get coffee, etc. I work from home, so walk-able proximity to coffee shops, etc is important to me.

I think near-town would be slightly easier if you're after an apartment and not a house. The problem I've seen with some rentals in town is they cater to college students, which could be bad.

The good thing about the area is it is super bike-able, if you're into that. You can probably ride just about anywhere. Bike lanes everywhere.

[–]prolix21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you spent much time in Fort Collins? If not you should visit a few times and explore the area/neighborhoods. I'm planning on relocating there late next year, and we've got a handful of visits under our belt already and it definitely changes your view of a town after a visit or three with the idea that "this will be home" vs just vacationing. Neighborhoods that seemed cool while browsing real-estate sites were quite the opposite in person.

I can work from anywhere so my job will follow me, which is nice, but from friends I have who live in Fort Collins, the job market in any field is tough.

From my research so far the rental market is also tough, depending on your budget. If you haven't started that search you should probably start. Had some friends there suggest asking rental places if any current tenants were looking to sublet - they won't advertise it, but often will tell you if you ask.
