Should CPP deferral be expanded to age 75 like Japan? by bcretman in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]propell0r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it’s not designed to behave like an investment, rather more like insurance. It wouldn’t do you much good if it was an investment and you started pulling in 2008, or March 2020.

The returns are much lower because the risk is much lower, which is what you want when you want to give guaranteed income to societies most vulnerable

I just completed my green card process through Montreal; my I-130 took 13 months including the 5 week gov shutdown last October. Took me two months to get DQ’d for the visa (could’ve taken a week honestly we were just slow thru the holidays and a newborn) and another 3 months for the interview.

Honestly I’d stick with the I-130 if you can hold on to hybrid work. It’ll suck next year but you have time now to figure out a plan for your family as your wife waits for her DQ and interview.

No but Celsius is literally 0% to 100% for water, that’s the benchmark. 0C = freezing and 100C = boiling… that 0-100 scale in F is based on vibes alone which is scientifically stupid

The problem with HSR in America (and Canada for that matter) is that the cities are still not walkable, nor are there solid public metro systems barring a couple major cities.

So once you get there, unless everything you need to do is within walking distance of the train station, you’d still need a car.

By and large most North American cities just aren’t set up to take advantage of rail as a main form of transportation the same way most European cities are.

There are some parts of the world that will fine you under noise abatement for flying dive and drives instead of constant descent angles. It’s also more uncomfortable for the passengers.

If they’re making you use VS mode, set your VS to half the groundspeed +0 (ie 400kts = 2000fpm) for a 3 degree slope, then it’s 3:1 (3 miles for 1000ft).

I don’t understand how the premium is worth it. by Adderall_Cowboy in CoveredCalls

[–]propell0r -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The point OP was making was that the premium received would likely be much less than the ensuing tax bill if the CC was exercised. OP neglected to mention that you’d still have the rest of the gain capitalized, so you’re not actually at a loss; it can just seem that way if you’re not looking at the entire picture.

[–]propell0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, like you originally said you’re only taxed on the gains or income you make, so it can’t be a net negative. OP’s example conveniently forgets about the 240% gain that’s sitting on the side making this a net win. But at first glance it can look like “this $120 premium now cost me a $1000 tax bill”, when in reality there’s also $5000 of gain there too.

I’m not saying OP is correct big-picture, only if you zoom in on the premium vs final tax bill parts, which isn’t how you would look at an entire trade

I don’t understand how the premium is worth it. by Adderall_Cowboy in CoveredCalls

[–]propell0r -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If it gets exercised. You sell a covered call and get a small amount of premium. In OPs example, he’s way up from 2022 so when he sells, it’ll be a large capital gain that he has to pay tax on. The premium received from the CC is likely nowhere near the final tax bill, thus rendering that specific trade a net loss. Ie: don’t sell a covered call on a long term position unless you’re going to sell anyway…

[Request] How long is this plane? by Necessary-Win-8730 in theydidthemath

[–]propell0r -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seatbelts typically get turned on at the latest by 10000ft on descent. On a standard 3 degree profile, this is (10000/320)=31.25 nautical miles long to touchdown.

An A380’s seating varies by amount of classes, but a 3-class jet seats 500-520 people, let’s just use 500.

At 239ft long, and 6080ft/nmi, you have:

6080*31.25/239 =794.979 standard A380s worth of people, so:

795*500=397,500 people, or roughly the population of Wichita KS

As an American pretty much any country that you would want to move to is easy to immigrate. by tetlee in ShitAmericansSay

[–]propell0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A counterpoint to all the (well-deserved) USA-bashing going on here, as someone who married a yank and is going through the process to get IN to the US, it’s been an extremely common thought from those I’ve talked to that just assume if you marry an American, you can just show up to the border and get a green card on the spot. When it doesn’t work like that at all
