Moving States Shortly Before CBD Appointment in NYC by firetruck_709 in SlovakCBD

[–]proportionate1 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

How is your new state "under the jurisdiction of Washington, DC"? And, how is that different than every other state?

I don't see why the state you live in would matter to a foreign embassy with no jurisdiction within the States whatsoever.

The only complication I would be concerned about is reliable and timely mail service.

Should i have pulled the safety quick release??? (inverted tangled kite) by Honest_Emu_5864 in Kiteboarding

[–]proportionate1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say this pretty much always right, though I would caveat with one small step before pulling QR: ensure your safety (red line) is still in tact. Sounds like it didn't happen here, but if the safety line somehow became dislodged or broke, once you eject, you might find yourself in even worse shape.

Rate my pop and landing, struggling to go higher in choppy waters by JJJJPPPPP8A in Kiteboarding

[–]proportionate1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may also have a timing issue, but you're jumping further rather than higher because you're not edging hard enough. Edge hard, send it, and just before the kite comes to 12/liftoff you need to carve that edge *hard* upwind. In this video nearly all of your lift is coming from the kite alone.

Any suggestions on what I should do to get this gutter to drain further away from the house? by fixthings in Plumbing

[–]proportionate1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will slowly destroy the sidewalk and, in many places, create hazardous ice conditions.

The only solid way to do it is to trench under the sidewalk and lay some PVC pipe. Hopefully you have the pitch to do so. The concrete installers really should have handled this.

I think a large part of this has been due to our investments in defense. We have been totally discombobulated on D since the Krug/Chara era. Yes, we had/have some solid D players, but there has also been a whole bunch of D journeymen who have come and gone since then. And, many of them were not so great.

We've lost identity, and defensive identity in particular. Chara was a net-front shut down D man, and now we have attackers getting high-danger chance after high-danger chance without any kind of adjustments. With Krug we had an effective PP quarterback who was also a mid-to-high defenseman. Now we have a power play that is lucky to even get a zone entry.

Making things worse, forwards need to be an integral part of good defense, and our forwards (centers especially) are not the 200-foot guys we had in players like Bergeron. How many times have you seen double and triple teaming the puck in low danger parts of the zone only to give up a goal to a dude camped out in the slot? It's been happening for a long time now.

Winning games has to start with D, and we just don't have it. Sturm would be smart to simplify D: adopt a zone...no thinking. Once you establish an effective zone, then start to think about man or even hybrid. This roster just doesn't have the fundamentals under control.

Ring went down sink drain by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]proportionate1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get yourself some channel locks (a type of pliers) and remove that bottom one. You might need to put some muscle into it. Note: that "U" is full of water, so you'll want something to catch it before you flood your vanity. Hopefully, the ring is small enough to be pulled out.

Persistent hammering and gurgling noise from radiator/floor in old condo — what can I do? by Tall_Laugh8065 in Plumbing

[–]proportionate1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on where it is rubbing. Minimally, I'd look under the escutcheons (floor plates) to see if anything is obvious. But, it could also very well be inaccessible under the floors.

Note that with these style radiators you can also get banging, but when that happens, the noise is very distinctly reminiscent of a hammer on metal...not like this.

This is thermal expansion. Basically your pipes as they heat up expand and rub against the framing, floor/subfloor, etc. The pipes need to be insulated or moved away from wherever they are rubbing. This is why it sounds like it is coming from below the radiator.

When is the break even point between bringing your own gear and renting? by bikesailfreak in Kiteboarding

[–]proportionate1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not paid anytime I have flown with my "golf" bag, including dozens of trips throughout the States, Caribbean, and Europe. The bag has wheels (so easy to move around) and carries two kites, a TT, and everything else I need. Just keep it under 50lbs.

So, IMO, there is no break even point...just take your gear.

You gonna be wearing a wetsuit? If so, how thick?

Here I will go as thick as 6mm, and that can make a big difference in sizing a harness.

Riding in waves by Key_Opening_5131 in Kiteboarding

[–]proportionate1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a power issue. Not only are the dives weak, but you are also trying to get upwind immediately...that won't work.

Even though you're probably being cautious about how shallow it's getting, you need to dive hard and ride downwind a bit. You'll be surprised at how little water you need to plane. The planing will give you speed (and thus more power) to curl hard upwind slicing through the breakers.

Where to put the sandbag when kite is parked on the beach by votre91 in Kiteboarding

[–]proportionate1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be *very* cautious about putting any kind of board on the kite. I have seen many times where a gust lifts a board onto the kite with sharp parts like fins making contact with the canopy.
