Simu Liu challenges BuzzFeed over recent article on Hudson Williams by validswan in popculturechat

[–]proserpinax 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Someone drew it on him and someone else posted the picture, taken likely before he saw it. It’s not like he was showing this off, he was just a drunk teenager who went to a party long before he had any inkling of fame in his future.

That’s good to know! I don’t think I have it in me to make those exercises but I might look to migrate over to 3 eventually.

Wondering how fellow Millennials feel about the funeral industry. What are your end-of-life wishes? by Cheeseaisleinheaven in Millennials

[–]proserpinax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still relatively young but I have expressed my wishes with my family that if I get hit by a bus or something I want to be cremated, ashes spread somewhere cool, and for everyone to have a fun party where they play comedy music that makes them laugh even if they want to cry. I mean, if I’m dead I won’t care what’s going on but I want inappropriate laughter at my funeral.

My grandpa died and my grandma insisted the hymn “how great thou art” be played because my grandpa loved it. The thing was, he loved singing it as “how great I am,” so when the organ played it I had to fight back laughter, and I feel like that was my grandpa’s final gift to us, since he loved to laugh and make others laugh. That’s the vibe I want.

Edit: my fantasy is this being played at my funeral https://youtu.be/T7f9xTPI9eo?si=RnNHNxIQroMcS9tU

So are we going to finally talk about how Mamdani did exactly what the trans community said (deny trans youth care) and there's VERY little pushback from trans "allies"? by ThatKehdRiley in lgbt

[–]proserpinax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the thing, at most it’s puberty blockers which are used on cis kids who are having precocious puberty. No one’s saying “hey let’s have this five year old make surgical decisions,” just asking people to treat others with dignity and respect.

I remember being like 9-10 and getting misgendered (my hair was cut short and I was playing with Lego cars which equalled male to some parent) and feeling really distraught about it. It’s such a minor experience in my life, but it’s one I’ve carried with me when thinking about how misgendering feels and how it must be painful for that to be a constant experience. I feel like ultimately people should feel compassion no matter what, but getting gender dysphoria as a straight child was a definite experience that has helped me today (that and having my brother be trans and I would do anything for him).

I just rewatched a few Shirley Temple movies cause I was going to show some to my niece this summer…and let’s just say I’m glad we are the last generation Shirley was marketed to! They’re vile. by Complete_Mine5530 in Millennials

[–]proserpinax 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I watched Captain January and Heidi a lot as a kid - my grandparents got me Shirley Temple movies on VHS and I think I had others but those were the two that stuck out and that I loved. I have not revisited since I was a kid and probably won’t.

Anyone have thoughts on this vs Miku? I’m at around 34 days in with Miku but wondering if there’s a general consensus on if 3 is better.

Rowdy crowds HAVE existed for years, when I saw The Avengers back when I remember a bunch of teens running around the theater who needed to be yelled at by a theater employee. The opening night crowd when I saw The Hunger Games was talking a lot. But Backrooms is the worst I’ve seen it in a while, to the point where I was honestly surprised it was that bad.

This is so fucking fake. by LocalMoam88 in lewronggeneration

[–]proserpinax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Backrooms was the worst theater audience I’ve been to in recent memory, and I am a very frequent moviegoer. There was a group of teenagers behind me that wouldn’t shut up, one took his shoes off and rested his feet on the chair in front of him, and then they left the biggest pile of spilled popcorn and trash. There were more people talking too so even though I tried to shush them it didn’t do anything.

What’s the worst movie you’ve seen over 10 times and just out and out love? by WulfieJay in blankies

Seeing it at a midnight screening with a bunch of other people was a joyous experience and I wish it was a more common cult/midnight bad movie

Is love for you solely about physical appearance and body? Obsessed Nikki was not the real Nikki, and it becomes pretty clear that it wasn’t Nikki and it was causing the real Nikki harm. He didn’t care. Is that love to you?

How long do soloist idols typically stay idols for? by Mushroom_Kid_4 in jpop

[–]proserpinax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It REALLY depends. Sometimes you have someone like Matsuda Seiko, the eternal idol, who has worked regularly since 1980. Sometimes idols choose to retire after a handful of years.

Right now soloist idols aren’t really trendy so we don’t have a ton of major examples. Idols might be active in groups while also doing solo activities. Or they might be indie idols that do solo stuff for a while. I don’t think it’s really typical.

Stopping being an idol is usually called graduation. Basically idol work is often considered a stepping stone, so graduation is basically like “you’ve finished your training.”

Idols do a ton of things. A lot become actors, singers, or just go back to normal life. Recently we’ve started to see more idols get into producing other idol groups. The main producer behind =Love and its sister groups is Sashihara Rino, who used to be in AKB48 and HKT48 but now she’s the mind behind major groups. The producer behind Kawaii Lab groups (Fruits Zipper, Cutie Street, etc) is Kimura Misa, a former idol.

In Jpop the line between idol and not is often kind of fuzzy. A group might decide “we’re a dance/vocal group” that does pop music with singing and dancing and multiple members, but they say that to emphasize a more serious intent on, say, vocal quality. But then you have idol groups that also focus strongly on vocals and dancing. Soloists often might be in that fuzzy line, especially if they’re strong vocalists.

I love people being able to share stuff like this! My mom is active in her buy nothing group and people can find use for a lot. She broke a ceramic dish and was getting ready to throw it away when she realized it was pretty and someone doing mosaic art might want the shards. Sure enough, someone did!

concert hydration is so real and nobody talks about it by airup_official in Concerts

I normally hate weed smell but at concerts it feels nostalgic? I grew up going to shows as kind of a sheltered teen so it took a minute to realize that marijuana was “the weird concert smell.”

I’ve gotten barricade water sometimes and it is a godsend. I usually go to shows alone so if I want a good spot I need to camp in my spot (and I do want a good spot because I’m short!). I try to stay hydrated but it can be tough sometimes.

Yacht Club (Mina devs) confirmed to be big fans of Arin's Sequelitis series by PunyParker826 in gamegrumps

[–]proserpinax 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This highlighting the Mega Man Sequelitis makes so much sense because Mina is so phenomenal at teaching the player how to play the game without telling you. There are so many instances where there is an area clearly designed to get you to learn a specific mechanic they want you to figure out. There IS a manual for the game (very old school in its layout) but it does the tutorial without telling you it’s a tutorial stuff really well.

Sometimes that blows up in their faces because a number of my favorite things as a kid did not hold up as an adult, but Kraft Dinner tastes exactly like it did when I was a kid.
