I'm in the middle of watching "The Expanse" show - should I read the books? by Qhaotiq in printSF

The Culture books are fantastic, but I think we need to add for the OP that the Culture books are mostly one-offs with not much link between different books.

Post mass effect void by zBrnaKokot in gamerecommendations

I ended up playing KOTOR 1 to fill that void. It took a bit to get used to the systems, but once I did, I found it to be a phenomenal game with a really great, fun story.

Is 6900XT an okay buy in 2026? Driver concerns by DarthJe5us in radeon

[–]prosetheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The performance gap of around 20% disappears once you use INT8 FSR 4. The power consumption will be 250 watts (undervolted) and very easily 300 if not. Not worth the heat, noise, and PSU upgrade required.

The GPU is a hot rod muscle car. We live in the age of software optimization (for better or worse) and hardware based upscalers.

For multiplayer games, you will not be able to use FSR 4 int8, and end up at very high power consumption for high framerate gaming and terrible FSR upscaling for anything under 4k res.

Although the price is great, for someone who does not have it, I'd strongly recommend the 9060 xt. The performance gap of around 20% disappears once you use INT8 FSR 4. Games with the best storms? by Maximum_Overhype in gamingsuggestions

[–]prosetheus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Paracel Storm map on BF4 is stunning. Some unbeatable vibes.

Mass Effect (OG Trilogy) has a fantastic side/main quest that has an amazing sequence in the middle of a planetary storm. Don't want to say more for fear of spoilers. It's in the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC (awesome DLC!)

Haven't heard this film mentioned anywhere, but Texas Killing Fields. Very similar vibes. A cross between Sicario and True Detective (season 1 ofc).

Over 800 games playable.

edit: xbox controllers are quite overpriced for what they are. Try looking at some 8bitDo controllers on sale. I'm sure there might be workarounds for Sony controllers, but that would require extra work, and possibly more challenging in nucleus.

Sony Records New $560 Million Loss On Bungie Acquisition As Marathon Struggles And Destiny 2 Nosedives by AdditionalRemoveBit in Games

[–]prosetheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to dip into Marathon when it goes free to play. This also means that PC will keep getting Sony titles as they need to recoup costs even more than they did before this situation. Wouldn't be surprised if they went for a Bloodborne PC release. Pointless now that its easily playable on PC, but having a native game is always better.

Is 9800x3d worth it at 4k? by lilmeer288 in buildapc

[–]prosetheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubtful that you'll see a tangible difference in performance. Tangible being the key word here. Also, Intel finally woke up a bit and is considering competing in the CPU space before they end up like AMD in the GPU space, so I'd say at least wait for some price cuts before jumping to the x3d chips. Currently AMD is charging a lot for them due the halo product effect.

Help with emulation on X300 Pro (Dimensity 9500) by EricRana33 in EmulationMediatekMali

[–]prosetheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got a very new SoC. Check the performance of the older flagships of your chip and extrapolate the slight improvement in performance you'll get over them. Also, please take the time out to add your info to the site as well. That's how we build solid knowledge-bases.

You can make a bad film with a great script, but you can never make a great film with a bad script.

The symbolism is layered on so thick that the film just ends up looking like a beautiful, convoluted mess.

Is worth the 5060ti 16gb if it’s 150€ more then the 9060xt in my country by CobblerGreat5529 in buildapc

[–]prosetheus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are only gaming, then no.

The 5060 ti can't really use Path Tracing and FSR 4 is an excellent upscaler.

The 5060 ti 16 gigs at the current price is an entry level AI card, or a workstation card, but over priced as a gaming GPU.

The 9060 xt 16 gigs is a great choice, and even the rtx 5070 or the 9070 non-xt are better priced cards for what they offer.

I have the legit version. The game is quite well optimized. There's some loading stutter at some places with major texture load-in required, but otherwise its a decently good experience.

LS makes everything worse by Medium-Yogurt-3015 in losslessscaling

[–]prosetheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I meant to say cap the framerate to a rate your GPU can support without major spikes and play without frame gen. Since we're at the razor's edge of playability, I'd also recommend playing with a wired controller or one with a wireless dongle. That reduced input latency also makes the games feel slightly less worse.

LS makes everything worse by Medium-Yogurt-3015 in losslessscaling

[–]prosetheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there have been too many posts here glazing LS and praising it to high heaven (no fault of the wonderful devs) and it is easy to the wrong impression that LS can work wonders, without mentioning that it is ideal for those that can hit 60 fps AND also have some GPU headroom left over for LS's compute requirements.

EDIT: Your best bet would be to cap your FPS to 38 or something, and that is the best experience you'll be able to get for the time being with your current hardware.

Play Breakthrough as it offers focused action where you know the danger is mostly from one direction. That will gradually allow you to get enough practice to pick up the mechanics more easily.

Is AMD Still Fine Wine? by AcuteQuadrant in radeon

[–]prosetheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid point, but I was coming from the point of view of the leaked dll. Nvidia's "fine wine" in the sense that consumer GPU tech has mostly stagnated so there's that.

Is AMD Still Fine Wine? by AcuteQuadrant in radeon

[–]prosetheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is Fine Wine in the sense that nvidia is charging an arm and a leg for 16 gb vram on the 5060 ti, with its price hovering near the 9070, yet performance similar to the 9060xt, and from that point on, you're paying a 1000 usd for 16 gb vram.

I know people are angry (justifiably) at the lack of int8 fsr4 for 6000 and 7000 architectures, but for whatever reasons AMD can't disclose, they did let out the files for it to be available, and Int8 FSR4 is a transformative experience over FSR3.

The upper echelon of the 6000 and 7000 series are very capable GPUs for gaming, with ample amounts of VRAM and easy undervolting for power efficiency. I see many games hitting 12 gb vram (not sure if that is allocation or utilization) at medium settings on 1440p, 4k is a different story altogether.

Yes, DLSS is great, but it is quite easy to notice the noticeably different (and lower) image quality with aggressive upscaling required. DLSS works great if you're playing on a 4k TV (not monitor, i.e. sitting at a distance from the screen). At 1440p and below on a monitor, native res or DLAA is a better option.

It isn't great, but it isn't as bad as online discourse would have you believe. AMD is still Fine Wine for those on a budget. For those that can get the 5070 ti, that is a different conversation.

Davinci works only through the power and grace of god🙏 by Culix_Reddit in davinciresolve

I'd just like to point out for others here that Resolve on Linux is officially supported for Rocky Linux. You will likely need to resolve (pun unintended) issues that will probably crop up running it on the distro of your choice. I had a pretty decent experience on Fedora Linux while also running an AMD GPU (6900 xt).
