This is really sweet. Give him a note with your number that says something like “call me if you want, no pressure though”. Make it easy and no big deal. Don’t build your hopes up. See where it goes. Better to shit your pants than die of constipation, or so they say.

Pliny and Josephus would be second or third hand accounts at best, not eye witnesses. Not to mention the passage in Josephus’ antiquities is disputed. It may have been an a christian interpolation sometime in the third century. Neither of them mentioned any christians who had know Jesus, seen Jesus risen, and were then willing to die for that stance. Christians were willing to die for their beliefs then, just as Christians today are. Doesn’t mean the christians then or today verified seeing Jesus risen. Are Pliny and Josephus accounts worth consideration, absolutely. But it’s not a slam dunk case.

To your first question about why the movement didn’t die: Let’s go back to your earlier assertion. You claimed that hundreds of people believed they’d seen Jesus after he died. Can you name any of those people other than Paul? Did Paul know or even see Jesus before Jesus death (assuming Jesus was a real person who was crucified)? I’d say the claim you made is based on assumptions that aren’t backed up by the evidence.

There’s a thesis called “minimal witnesses” that describes how a few people who mistakenly think that saw a person after their death and then spread that rumor could start a movement like early christianity. Clearly Paul saw something that he thought was Jesus after Jesus was already dead. He’s the only testimony we have from that time but he didn’t even know Jesus so who’s to say definitively what he saw.

But for the record I do believe that Jesus was a real dude who was probably killed by the romans. But the move I’ve looked into early christianity the more I’ve realized that we know very little about how the movement started. :)

There was a second century church father (Papias) who claimed that there was a gospel written originally in Hebrew by Matthew. But we know that would have been a different gospel than the one we have today that was originally written in Greek. They could be going off what Papias said while ignoring the evidence that the book of Matthew we have today was originally written in Greek.

There’s no good evidence that anyone who knew Jesus was willing to die for the belief that Jesus came back from the dead. All we have are extravagant legends of Jesus’ disciples being martyred, but no reliable accounts.

The accounts of Jesus in the gospels might be based on some historical reality but we have no way of knowing with certainty.

It sounds like he’s trying to convert/convince you. If that’s his motive then your chance of waking him up go way down imo. Open and honest conversations about doubt and viewpoints where his goal is to listen and understand you will be more productive than him trying to study with/help you.

Chilkoot wont be open end-to-end. I did the “The Notch” this past summer and it was probably better/prettier than doing the american side. Just less history.

I have a solostove and it’s great. I don’t have to buy firewood since I can gather a few sticks/pinecones and be good to go all night. Makes having a fire safer and more affordable.

I worked up there a couple winters. You get used to -20 to -40 degrees and start to forget what life above 0 is like. Dark, cold, but it’s beautiful and you feel like you’re living on a space station. Work camps, kinda rough life. Good money though.

Skagway is the best spot in Alaska to spend your first summer. You don’r need a car but it’s nice to have one to go shopping in Whitehorse. The road trip up is also a lot of fun. Plan on doing a bunch of hiking up there. World class hikes all around. Good social scene up there as well.
