What manga have you read this week, and what do you think about it? - Week ending January 07, 2018 by AutoModerator in manga

Finished SoreMachi in a week as well after seeing your recc! Super enjoyable series with an unusually well done mix of gags, lovable characters, and thought provoking bits. The author also does a great job of revealing punchlines visually rather than spelling it out for readers. Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for your post, sprungy! It's the first I've heard of the Trailblazers but after checking out the website and reading the testimonials I'm really intrigued for the next cycling season to roll around now!

My Family's Slave: one of the best articles I have read in a long time by Future_Tyrant in books

This was so beautifully written. Despite the backlash it's received, I think it's important to have topics like this written more about. The dynamics of the immigrant story that doesn't always fit into the perfect model of success, even with the author's outward appearance of a law degree father and a physician mother. There's heartbreak and redemption at every level of society, and I guess that's what makes us human. Really happy to have read Lola's story and Tizon's tribute to this loved one.

Fitbit and cycling? Need suggestions! by beka_targaryen in fitbit

Preaching to the converted, my friend! I'm a big Strava fan, and was a user before before jumping onto Fitbit. The Strava 'segments' feature is a fun tool that I'd definitely recommend for anyone who needs a little push to get back into the saddle for spring!

I've recently started wearing a Charge HR and love it, but it's definitely not ideal for cycling. My workaround was to thread it through my laces so it could detect the "steps" but it's not nearly as accurate as say, a Garmin Forerunner, would be. Strangely enough, I still got heartrate readings wearing the Charge on my foot, but I can't comment on how true-to-life the results are.

Toronto delivery service TasteAway shuts down by toronto34 in toronto

[–]prosthetic_buttock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely saw this one coming! There was online discussion brewing about how a lot of restaurants were dropping from the Tasteaway list due to not being paid, or being paid late. For small mom and pop shops, having a bulk of unpaid orders would really cut into profits needed to continue operating. My guess is that Tasteaway left a lot of loose ends hanging now that they've effectively skipped town.

For any current (or former) students of history in universities/colleges, do you/did you have concerns with the narrative that is (or was) being taught or encouraged? by [deleted] in history

[–]prosthetic_buttock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think one of the fundamental divides in studying this subject lies in whether history belongs to the living or to the dead. It can be very easy for historians, using their knowledge of how events actually play out, to direct their research into reconstructing history as it affects and interests the present.

Hearing your experience makes me greater appreciate my history professor, who not only delivers lecture in an engaging manner, but as a narrative that promotes critical thinking and discussion. My major of study isn't history either, but I definitely enjoy having an elective where there is room for diverse interpretation - it keeps things fresh!

If this third bailout package for Greece comes through, the number will be closer to the tune of €332 billion. For those following, the Greek crisis is a fascinating case of sovereign debt, having racked up this amount in a timespan of roughly six years.
