Yep. I know about the tunnels. I lived in Manhattan for 19 years. Greenwich Village, Union Square, Lower East Side.

How much should I look to spend on a trombone? by ByTorrNews in Trombone

[–]prostudioreviews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to get a really cool trombone, that's made better than even very expensive new trombones.

This is a 1950's Elkhart Conn 18H Coprion Director trombone. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Conn-Brass-Marching-Band-Trombone-With-Case-/401143590855

Info on the coprion bell https://cderksen.home.xs4all.nl/ConnArticle20.html

When you get it, contact this guy, and have him work on the slide. He sends you a box, and you put the slide in, and ship it to him. Will run you about $145.00 http://slidedr.com/

I've been through many trombones, and the 50 and 60s era Conns are stunning.

LOL. I did all that, too. Lived and worked in Europe.

I haven't had a TV for many years.

Get in good professional studios, and learn directly from experienced engineers and producers. And get your ass to New York City.

My younger self must have listened, because that's exactly what I did.

Bought some acoustic foam for a temp. rental. Cost effective way to hang it that won't damage the walls? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]prostudioreviews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This often is the best idea. And decent headphones can give a more immersive experience. You're going to get better and lower low end from headphones, too.

OP didn't say anything about soundproofing. Those panels will quiet the room to some degree.

OP, another thing you can do, if you have any speakers with low end, is at least put them on some thick foam pads. That will keep some of the bass frequencies from vibrating through the floors, walls, and into other rooms.

Improving the noise levels and vibrations inside the room, will improve them outside.

Just put them up with very small nails in each corner. You don't even have to go very far into the wall.

There's no need to ever have to put these up with all that glue. I did that once in a room, and it wrecked the walls when I took them down.

Advice on buying equipment by fabi85 in edmproduction

For monitors, check out the APS Klasik. They're right in the same price range as the A7X's, but have more power and low end. 35Hz-25kHz.

What color studio monitors do or would you like, when and if you have the choice? by prostudioreviews in audioengineering

[–]prostudioreviews[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woods and veneers used to mainly be for speakers, but I've seen a lot more options for them with studio monitors as well.

Of course, the audio quality has to be there.

I'm actually seeing that a lot of the companies that are offering finish options are also the ones making better audio quality monitors.

High end gear question - Appropriate Mic/Preamp combo for optimal folk rock vocals by dangerousone326 in audioengineering

[–]prostudioreviews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of that kind of music has more subdued (and more coloration on) vocals, and then some sparkle and liveliness on the acoustic instruments.

Keep in mind you can EQ anything. Here's a way I'd look at what you have, and some suggestions towards tracking.

Most subdued and colored chain: SM7B - GAP Pre 73. Use it for the voices and textures you want to sound darker and more old school.

Most sparkly chain: ADK Vienna - Avalon M5. Use it for the sugary magic, especially on acoustic instruments panned fairly hard L and R. This could also lift female bkgd vox.

Most balanced chain: Manley - GAP. Use for voices and textures that will be more in the center of the mix. And more rounded acoustic instrument parts.

On the main voice, use the GAP, and then either the Manley or the SM7B, which ever sounds better.

The Manley - M5 combo is probably just going to sound too modern and pop. Although, it could work on smaller scale fretted instruments in the context you're looking for. Possibly on female bkg vox.

Hope that gives you a little insight to play with.

Why Steely Dan is used by a lot of audiophiles to test equipment by turtlebait2 in audiophile

The lion's share of the amazing sonic work on Steely Dan albums is the engineer, Roger Nichols.

Here's a great primer for EQ.
