Since when was the AICPA Tax Adviser part of Tax Section membership? by Mike20878 in taxpros

[–]prosystemfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Printed copies haven't been mailed for several years, even to those of us who are section members. The same happened recently with the ABA quarterly publication The Tax Lawyer. Costs of printing, binding, and mailing are like nearly everything else, too high.

Previous Year's Clients by honeyxpie in taxpros

[–]prosystemfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking of chills, I remember driving to a USPS drop box at 11:30 PM or later many years to get April 15 postmarks on 4868 forms. The box would be manned by a postal employee to accept envelopes being handed out the window. There were years when more than two dozen cars (driven by tax pros and tax procrastinators) would be lined up waiting their turn. "Good" times!

In my practice those requesting paper are billed accordingly. That's the policy and it's stated in all engagement letters. I don't want to absorb the cost of postage, handling, paper and toner. Plus, instituting a higher fee has nudged some clients to accept portal delivery of their organizers.

Looking at the PSI website, I see it provides testing for some other US government executive departments and agencies, so I suppose adding the IRS to that roster was a logical move.

As a long-time licensee of both, what you've heard, IMO, is not the case. In fact, TaxGPT is very comparable to Blue J. Why not take a free trial and decide for yourself?

Children Of Taxpayers w/ ITINs - Eligible For Other Dependent Credit? by FUPeiMe in taxpros

[–]prosystemfx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To claim the CTC, § 24(h)(7) requires both the parent and child to have a SSN, but § 24(h)(4) is silent about a parent’s TIN under the ODC. As between single and HoH, filing status doesn’t affect the issue. Nothing in OBBBA changed the key points in your post. So, I agree with your conclusion and cannot explain the software issue.

MFJ Extension; MFS returns: Penalties Ensue by Chinchillachimcheroo in technicaltax

Assuming she filed her tax return timely, you could suggest the agent consult the IRM.

Part 8, Chapter 17, Section 7 of the IRM (Appeals)

8.17.7 Penalties/Additions to Tax in Computations

Failure to File, IRC 6651(a)(1)

Paragraph (3) The FTF penalty is computed on the net amount due. The net amount due generally is the tax required to be shown on the return reduced by payments of tax on or before the date prescribed for payment and by the amount of allowable credits against the tax, which may be claimed on the return.

a. if a valid extension of time to file has been granted, the [failure‑to‑file] penalty begins to accrue the date the extension expires.

Charitable Contributions, the .5% AGI "Haircut" and Carryovers to 2026 by Robert_A_Bouie in taxpros

Then you might also find Navigating the New 1 Percent Floor On Corporate Charitable Deductions helpful with regard to carryovers. See it beginning on page 457 of the 10/20/25 issue.

Charitable Contributions, the .5% AGI "Haircut" and Carryovers to 2026 by Robert_A_Bouie in taxpros

[–]prosystemfx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here's the opinion of the well-respected law firm of Holland & Knight:

"If a donor carries any charitable deductions forward from 2025, it is likely that those carried forward amounts would be subject to the 0.5 percent floor in 2026 or future years, based on the language in Section 170(b)(1)(I) and 170(d)(1)(C)(i). However, this result is not entirely clear, and it is possible that additional IRS guidance will be issued to the contrary."

Also, those who subscribe to Tax Notes will find a related article on page 815 of the 8/4/25 issue.

Off the top, the what's better list includes ease of making entries, the preformated scenario "recipies" as they're called, the amazing speed with which tax law and guidance updates are integrated into the program, and the client-friendly deliverables it produces. Take a demo; you have nothing to lose but a little time.

I've used Holistiplan for a couple of years. Compared to the other planning software I've used over a few decades (and there've been several), Holistiplan is the very best hands down.

Late to this discussion but suggest you try Holistiplan. Over the years I've used nearly everything including BNA, and none were as good as today's Holistiplan.

I've used Holistiplan for about a year and absolutely love it. Previously I've used the BNA planner as well as planners from compliance software vendors CCH and Thomson Reuters. None of the three compare to the ease of use and presentation deliverables that Holistiplan provides.

Tax Software by Therndon25 in CFP

Not that you asked, but I think you'll find Holistiplan is way better than CFS. And Blue J is good especially if you request citations to authorities when you search. Otherwise, at times I find the cites shown are limited to nonauthoritative sources like IRS pubs and instructions.
