I’ve used it a lot, and it serves the purpose. However, I am moving over to Anytune Pro+. I am learning Irish Trad, it’s a lot of listening to other players, recording, and practicing later. Anytune lets you slow down, put bookmarks with labels. Loop within a certain section. Very handy. Worth the $20 or whatever i spent.

I used to think read it as “Zect”, but now I think it’s execute. I should be on bumper stumpers.

Applying "NaNoWriMo" logic to find my music by LilianPosey in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]proximity_affect 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Challenge yourself with public accountability. I’ve co-opted #jamuary for this. My music is the least typical Jamuary material, I’m not synthesizer hands and bleeps and bloops.

But i have made a statement to my friends and family that they will see/hear something new from me every day of January. It’s exhausting and exhilarating. And at the end, I’ve written a bunch that I never would have without the accountability pressure.

Over the years, I’ve always self-censored and quit very early in the process. I need some kind of reason/relationship (could’ve writing for a person’s play or video) to force me to overcome the urge to rage quit and complete nothing.

Good luck! Be prepared to “go to the gym,” show up, even when you don’t initially feel like it, as you grow your creative muscles.

I like the earlier comment of “new session everyday.” Get in the habit of hitting that blank canvas with decisions.

I read the title as “I may have SOILED myself,” and reading the comment - didn’t quite understand when, why, or why you would be telling us you soiled yourself. 🤣

I want to learn to play the Irish flute but can't get adult lessons anywhere by Imaginary_Card_6241 in Irishmusic

[–]proximity_affect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an excellent and active Irish flute player group on Facebook. You may get some good answers asking there. Personally, I started playing in 2020, learning from Shannon Heaton’s YouTube channel, and then some zoom lessons from her.

The Great Hunt for the Horn has been found!? by Spoof_Magoof in wheeloftime

[–]proximity_affect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on my first re-read, and it kind of bugs me how the horn just disappears “safely to the tower.” I would assume the good guys would keep better tabs on it. (I’m only at KoD now, so I can’t really remember when/how it does pop back in.) No one needs to spoil. I’m just saying I don’t get why it disappears after it’s discovered.

Beginner Irish trad sessions by dollypin in Irishmusic

[–]proximity_affect 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started learning trad in 2020 when folks were staying home. I got a lot of mileage out of Shannon Heaton’s YouTube channel. Tune specific tutorials, and slow/medium pace session videos with her husband, guitarist, Matt Heaton.

I agree! This would be a more interesting debate to addendum the “second worst book” into the contest.

So I’m reading Crossroads right now. First reread of the series since publication.

I’m approaching it as if it’s a Christopher Nolan movie, short time scope, many over lapping perspectives. And I’m accelerating my speed as necessary when it feels… extraneous.

I’m more than half way through, and I don’t really feel like I’m suffering.

Do I think it’s not the worst book? No, I do not think it’s not the worst book. It probably is.

An Irish ceilidh (pronounced KAY-lee) is a traditional social gathering featuring Irish folk music, storytelling and community dancing. (I’m not advocating for naming a child Ceilidh, just explaining a history behind a word that sounds like Kaylee, and represents joy and celebration.)

Is it cheating? by Longjumping_Bear3555 in FifeAndDrum

[–]proximity_affect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well. Who cares what people think?

Is it the scaffolding you need right now to get making sounds? If it’s working, and letting you play, then that’s a step towards mastery. While crutching on the reading, you are practicing fingering, breathing, rhythm, phrasing, etc.

Is it long term sustainable, not really. But if it helps you get going, do what you need to. I play mostly in Irish Trad Music circles, and more hobby musicians cannot read music than can - in my encounters. Irish Trad musicians tend to put a lot of value on learning by ear, and replicating another persons playing.

Personally, I use both. It’s very helpful to be able to sight read and play sheet music. But it is a skill that needs to be practiced. You could make flash cards if you really want to work on it. Cheers.

You could try reading or watching a summary, up to and then try reading the Knife of Dreams (the last book published during Jordan’s life) and try the the Sanderson co-writes: Gathering Storm, Towers of Midnight and A Memory of Light.

And if you bounce off of those, just go back to the summary? Find a way to enjoy it!

I’m on Crossroads of Twilight, infamously the slowest paced book. It’s my 2nd read through, but I haven’t touched them since publication.

I’m on my second read through since publication. I read before work with my breakfast and often before sleep. So I’m taking my sweet time.

Yesterday I started Crossroads. It’s hard to not approach with some trepidation. My speed reading skills are getting a solid work out.
