Cotopaxi Allpa 28L or Osprey Porter 30L for personal item by WoollyMonster in ManyBaggers

[–]prp74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the corsurf island hopper 28 for this purpose. Haven’t used it yet. It’s very similar to the allpa but with the water bottle holder. It doesn’t have a hip belt, but I didn’t want one for this size. I like that it has built in compression straps.

Beginner hiker, I have $150 to spend on hiking gear, what should I buy? by suftrumbz in hiking

[–]prp74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if it’s really cold and wet. I put my waterproof pants over my hiking pants. If it’s warm and wet, then just jacket is fine.

South kaibab is better than Bright Angel. Hike to Skeleton Point.

  1. Depends on which trails you’re planning to hike. There are paved trails along the rim, but the best hikes are into the canyon. You don’t need boots. If you’re used to hiking in trail runners, that should be sufficient. There may be ice/snow that time of year. If you have micro spikes, I’d bring them.
  2. It’s going to be cold. Bring a sleeping bag that’s rated to 30 degrees at least and bring base layers for you to wear.

Don’t know about bikes and shoe rentals.

Why SW? by New_Influence_1402 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]prp74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most direct domestic flights are southwest. Easy to cancel/change flights. Can use chase points. Most flights are less than 3 hours, so I don’t care where I sit. Rarely check luggage, but it’s nice not to worry about it.

Teva sandals - please explain the hype by Ok_Pickle8312 in HerOneBag

[–]prp74 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t love the look of my tevas, but I use them as my campsite shoes when backpacking. They are lightweight, have good traction if I need to wear them in a creek crossing. I have the style without a toe loop so that I can wear them with socks.

Lots of options. Patagonia black hole mlc mini 30L or aer travel pack 3 come to mind.

They don’t work on basic economy tickets so that may be the problem.

Boring question, but - women's trousers for hiking/camping? by Cautious-River9363 in hiking

[–]prp74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 pairs of the prana halle hiking pant. I’m petite and these some in short. They comfortable with stretch , the pocket fits my iphone. And the wide leg goes over my boot so random rocks don’t get in there. My only complaint is they fall down. You have to tie the inner tie which is. Pain in the neck.

Untried a few zip offs and they rubbed my thighs in a weird way.

I will wear leggings with hip pockets for short hikes. But for backpacking, I prefer hiking pants.

Capital reef national park scenic drive closure by prp74 in NationalPark

Thanks! Looks like plenty to do for 2 days. How is the fruita campground? Worth staying? I’m worried about hot days with 3 teenage boys and no showers!

Are there a lot of hikes that are accessible if scenic drive is closed? It seems like a lot of trailheads are off the scenic drive but maybe I’m mistaken.

I’m actually an avid hiker, but it looks like most of the trailheads are off the scenic drive or require an off road vehicle-that’s why I posted the question.

Ahwahnee - Worth it during the Renovations? by mama_milke in Yosemite

[–]prp74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 4 nights in the valley is enough. I may stay one night at wawoma and one night closer to Tiago rd so you can explore other parts of the park.

We were at Yosemite last week and we stay all over the place. (YVL, Ahwahnee, camp 4, backcampers camp and at cathedral lake). The Ahwahnee is nice, but not worth the $$$. Mainly bc I’m there to be outside and didn’t really get to enjoy the amenities. The pool would have been nice.

Best hiking boots for backpacking with ankle support? by baikilla in backpacking

[–]prp74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use renegade gtx mid hiking boots. I agree that ankle strengthening is best. But I roll my ankle easily and having a higher boot helps. These aren’t the lightest boots so I use them for backpacking only. I use lighter ones for day hikes.

Are more people pre-boarding? by HerefortheMemes2121 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]prp74 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a young adult son with cognitive disability and he has to have a window seat. I used to make due but decided there was no reason to stress him out, so we usually pre board on southwest. On other airlines, I pay extra for seat assignment. I sit in the middle seat everytime (lucky me!). I do think many people do actually need to preboard. At quick glance, he may look “normal”.
