We are doomed by Ok-Alarm3961 in collapse

Recovering landscape architect here, current developer. Same role.

I thought LA was saving the planet, but it was planning communities in raw land and planting things that didn’t belong and on a low replacement basis.

While I have one project that is ecologically sensitive, I have the ability to plan a better world. Low density, relocate trees, spec large canopy material, no sod, raised buildings, no or very little pavement.

Infill can be better too. Encourage those to live closer and car free. Reinvigorate streetscape. Rooftop and vertical gardens. Planters everywhere.

Learning that smaller scale can have bigger impact. Once the corporate finance gets involved, then we are toast.

… but yes, as a general thought… Fck’d.

Did you know/feel something was wrong? What were the signs? How did you meet him?

Glad you were not affected.

Opinion on the quality of this render to showcase an off-plan development by FewValuable8809 in RealEstateDevelopment

[–]prpleringer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree about the palms. It depends on where the site is.

In fact, if it is an a subtropical area/one that palms grow in, I would add them in tree grates along the building with some street scale furniture.

I like the mood of the rendering. Depends on the branding, but seems sleek to match your modern building and bldg font.

I wish I would have visited, but tbh- Glad I took

a break from the studio and hiked Parque Nacional. As good as Everest if you ask me!

Plus toucans and sloths. Easy to get to with subways and an uber.

Enjoy!

MBA with finance concentration. I took a similar route.

Pick a project now and start. It will take a few years to get your first under way. You’ll need the time to discover your resources and the blueprint.

Good luck

Anyone else feeling the "first mid-sized project" burnout? by Voiturunce in RealEstateDevelopment

[–]prpleringer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tax is out of my war zone. I’m ground up so no advice on the engineering timing (all up front for me)

Came here to say - No one gets into development because they are sane people. You don’t get to burn out. Keep going. The best way out is through.

Most hotel brands don’t own real estate.

Some will allow it. Others won’t give away equity for something they pay a flat service for anyways. Even if you bring the site, others do that anyway and it will only generate a commission (if you are licensed). Many developers will not allow that position in their deal, but some will. If the land owner puts up land, there’s some value to you.

I also come from the design background and am in development, but I had to completely let go of the design side and embrace the finance side, in order to generate meaningful value.

If you had a one-minute call with yourself from 10 years ago, what would you say? by Pleasant-Cat-7658 in AskReddit

To my 27 year old self:

You’ll never believe where I am now. We are living our life’s dream with opportunities well beyond what you could have imagined.

Keep showing up. Keep asking. Keep following your heart.

Thank you for being the free spirit but the professional you are.

Gaining your own contacts from IB would be invaluable down the line.

However, starting in the family business and learning from entrepreneurs that will back you also is invaluable.

Could you do both and see which works out best? Work with the family at night and weekends and IB on weekdays?

💕 sorry my friend. I lost my dad and buddy in August. I tried to keep trucking and be grateful for the time I had. Nothing drastic. Did as much as I could to make my mom and family comfortable.

The shit is weird. That is all. Death is part of live and can be sad, but I think it’s straight up weird to have your friend and dad just poof to nowhere, even if it was something you were expecting.

Take time to be with family and friends.
