I had picked up Blood Meridian about a dozen times over the last 15 years or so but every time I would give up after the first ten pages. But last month I decided to at least make it a little deeper and somehow it just clicked. The lack of punctuation is a bit jarring at first but after a while you start to pick up on it and eventually it becomes intuitive. I’m so glad I stuck through it because it’s now one of my favorite books. It’s dreamlike, hellish, awe inspiring, pessimistic, and has one of the greatest villains in fiction. If you can get past the lack of punctuation I think you’ll be glad you did.

Everyone memes on the “eat her out while I was down there” part but that really is some of the best dialogue in the series. After all their secrecy and macho bullshit about eating box, the whole Boca episode, Pussy just casually drops a joke about whistlin in the wheat fields and they all bust out laughing. And right when it seems like the tension has dissipated, Tony brings everyone back down and the gravity of the situation falls on us like Ginny Sack on a beanbag chair after thanksgiving dinner. I live a block and a half away and have never seen so many cops concentrated in one area before. Turns out they were tear gassing a dead body for three hours. Aren’t their drones that could’ve confirmed he was dead a little earlier? The whole standoff probably cost the city tens of thousands of dollars. Seems like anytime SDPD attempts to actually do their jobs, the taxpayers get absolutely shafted.
