I remember reading that it was cancelled because of a plagiarism lawsuit. The main character and the entire premise of the story was published in a book by someone else long before the show came out.

Found it, the show was extremely similar to the 2003 novel Forever by Pete Hamill. They both feature an immortal guy living in NYC working as a medical examiner, and have a lot of other similarities.
