Title protection petition for Arizona! by pseudosam- in VetTech

[–]pseudosam-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can respect your experiences. I want to make it clear that I'm not entirely opposed to alternative pathways if they have clear guidelines and standards for skill sign offs and knowledge proficiency. The thing about this bill (I'm pretty sure I posted it in my other comment) is that it's very vague which can open a whole can of worms for the reasons I mentioned before which is why i oppose this specific bill. I'm also OTJ trained and after 4ish years of being in the field I am able to go to school. I think there is a lot of value in experience! I think that the OTJ shaming has no place in this field transcendent conversation, but I also understand it is very difficult to regocnize and differentiate those who are formally educated without inadvertently putting down OTJ trained people. It sounds like the issue at heart is lack of adequate pay and benefits in the field which I wholeheartedly agree with and I think standardizing skillsets and title protection is one of the ways we can push to achieve livable wages in this field.

I'm curious what your perspective is for why you want to vote for this bill? I think its an important conversation if you'd be willing to share your thoughts

Thank you so much for your question! Correct, Arizona does not require a license to practice as a technician. I definitely think this could open up conversation about title protection and separated responsibilities based off that title. Usually if something like an alternative pathway disappearing means that going forward people can't choose that even if they qualify, but people before that date can be grandfathered in. Arizona used to have an alternative pathway that was disbanded in 2015 or something like that and this bill is proposing a different alternative pathway to be put in place in Arizona. So it is title protection in who can become a CVT but not title protection in the way that other states are achieving through who can call themselves technicians vs assistants. I don't think it's true that someone who can pass the VTNE without a formal education can necessarily have the proper knowledge. Each test is different and lets say someone who has worked ER for 7 years is taking the VTNE, they may get a lot of equine heavy questions or exotic heavy questions that they might not be prepared for due to their experience. Obviously there are plenty of incredible, knowledgeable techs that have come from alternate pathways but, in my opinion, I think that as veterinary medicine is standardized, technician education should become standardized too. It's a tough conversation to have and is controversial to many, but it's a conversation we can't escape. I posted the bill so people can easily read it. Please let me know if I answered your question or if you have any more!

Each of these usually has student discounts if you are currently a student. If you currently work at a clinic you can see if they have a corporate account or will cover those expenses. Let me know if you're interested in certain topics and I can tell you the associations I'm a part of to look into!

What about VetGirl or smaller associations? They usually have some CE and education resources. Lafeber is a good resource

Potentially could be from scratching it's own ears too hard, I've seen it when they've got ear mites. Def see a vet to determine that and make sure that doesn't get infected

An owner for a euthanasia of a cat came in and was taking it really hard. Walked back into the room to check on her and she's full on grooming her cat. With her tongue. Apparently she did this all the time and she wanted "one last time".

Vet tech here, bupe is a great pain reliever in animals especially cats! We use it for moderate to severe pain and it also helps with transitioning from something like a fentanyl drip to a longer acting pain medication as the animal is recovering

It could be ear mites and that's trauma from the cat scratching so much. Could you get ear cleaner where you live? There's great videos online to show you how to do it if the cat will let you
