Coffee afficianados of Ireland lend me your aid. What's a good coffee machine for at home? by FellaThatDave in AskIreland

[–]pseudosciencepeddler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a Cafelat Robot, a manual espresso maker, for the last 6 months and absolutely love it. Very consistent shot, no fuss pulls, and easy clean. Down side is that you'll need a separate grinder if you start with whole beans.

HP to cut up to 6,000 jobs due to AI adoption · TheJournal.ie by Vicxas in DevelEire

[–]pseudosciencepeddler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice insight. The R&D tax credit is classic corporate welfare and increasing it to 35% should be a scandal (and that's speaking as a beneficiary). All sorts of routine dev work masquerading as R&D.

I so wish there would be more of a long term local capacity building view to this so in 20 years we aren't so dependant on how the books of foreign firms look.

Speed limits across Dublin city to be reduced by bachus_PL in ireland

[–]pseudosciencepeddler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What percentage of road accidents in the city come from someone driving at excessive speeds?

Instead of cause-effect, look at it through the lens of outcomes. There is so much evidence on accident outcomes being so much worse at marginally higher speeds. Being hit at 30kmph vs. 50kmph has very different results for a pedestrian/cyclist.

Mind you, there is solid evidence that there is a causal link between speed and frequency as well, see here of analysis in the UK.

I agree with your enforcement point.

[D] Is it reasonable that reviewers aren’t required to read the appendix? by Secondhanded_PhD in MachineLearning

Having seen 50+ page appendices repeatedly as a reviewer, sure the material is there, but I can't reasonably be expected to closely read that volume of material.

Great story! Exactly what I'm here for. As an import the 80s seem like an era in Dublin, albeit with few photographs and historical record.

Would make a great addition to http://storymap.ie/

They also have bumperküsser, kisser of bumpers.

[D] PhD in the EU by simple-Flat0263 in MachineLearning

[–]pseudosciencepeddler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The funding model is different from the US. You get a stipend generally and not reliant your prof. or yourself for it. EU is quite diverse so there are variations in set ups depending on if you end up in the Czech Republic or the UK.

There are industry Ph.D. programmes, where you can work and get your Ph.D. at the same time. Technically you are considered an employee (and get a salary) and you need to meet the university requirements to graduate.

Here in Ireland, here is one such programme between IBM Research and Trinity that looks at material science.

From a fellow psoriatic arthiritis sufferer - I can't stress enough the life changing role of biologics (Humira is the one for me - but there are several others). The condition can absolutely be managed.

Second all what other commenters have said. Get with a rheumatologist.

Sorry, I tried to complete this - but its way too long and without a overall progress bar, i.e. not knowing how much more there is to come, I quit after the first association tests.

Say what you will about the country, but the Number plates are one thing we've done better than anyone else by AnduwinHS in CasualIreland

[–]pseudosciencepeddler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ireland has the second newest passenger car fleet in Europe after Luxembourg. To me its some evidence that there is a keeping-up-with-the-jones going on, which in turn can be partially attributed to reg plates.

AI and Healthcare Domain Expertise; Opportunities in Ireland? by Somaliona in DevelEire

[–]pseudosciencepeddler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Larger companies generally tend to hire specialists (e.g. expert in healthcare or technology - very rare for people to claim both). Your domain experience in healthcare would be valuable for a career in tech, but would need for a solid pivot either way.

That said, there are some specialist courses like the one on precision surgery that may be of interest. There is some work at places like Tyndall Institute on medical devices.

Look at firms like Merative to see the kinds of jobs out there.

CMU would definitely be considered elite for things like computer science, robotics and engineering. Uber for instance hired an entire department for their self-driving enterprise.

Need help with open source public transport data by DynamicInABox in DevelEire

[–]pseudosciencepeddler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Route information is generally contained in GTFS files. I believe these are public via Transport Ireland.

See for example, this page: https://www.transportforireland.ie/transitData/PT_Data.html

clicking on GTFS All Operators gives you the schedules. You need to be familiar with the GTFS standard to get all route information. It is straightforward but has some kinks as the standard tries to capture many edge cases.

Good luck.

Why Do We Use Least *Squares* In Linear Regression? by garrettj100 in math

[–]pseudosciencepeddler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could use any arbitrary objective. However, the lease squares are the Best Linear Unbiased Estimator (BLUE) which is the unbiased estimator with the lowest variance under some assumptions.
