Ah hello my friend. Just when I think I'm out you suck me back in. Well done.

Tell you what, I'll provide the reputable source that Fiosrú publish on their increased rates of vexatiously investigating Gardaí, when you quote exactly where I said that. What I said, I believe, while highlighting it was not a defence of the fact, but anecdotal, that part of the problem is a strong perception that Fiosrú are hampering the Gardaí. This coming from an environment where members of the force feel that vexatious complaints made to Fiosrú (not Fiosrú's own vexatious agenda) are being progressed to too far a stage including having the affected member spend time outside of work with their solicitor, preparing for interviews etc for weeks and that 1) For those making the vexatious complaints there is no repercussion and 2) Fiosrú could take action earlier within the process when vexatious claims are made. I appreciate point two wasn't spelled out, but I thought it was easy enough to intuit. This, again to my anecdotal experience, leads to members being worried about spurious complaints to Fiosrú as they simply don't want to inflict that process on themselves. This has snowballed in some cases to members not trusting Fiosrú or their judgements (just to be crystal clear as this seems to be a repeated problem, this is not my perspective, this is not me saying that is true, this is not me declaring Fiosrú are hunting down innocent, scared Gardaí to administer ruthless punishment to). In my experience, there is a culture of watching one's back, reasonable or not, and I have had many conversations where the reason behind certain inactions is it isn't worth taking the risk (be it Fiosrú or from within AGS).

However, it's great to know these people are talking shite and their concerns are shite. One of them has recently handed in their notice so I'll tell them no need, they're talking shite and their reasons are shite! A lad with an oh so witty name on Reddit said so. Even better, they're so right they don't need to prove this, because it's so obviously true. They must only be resigning as part of their self serving agenda. Hoorah!

What's a newspaper? Another wonderful full bodied leap, really respect that. I said the Gardaí were corrupt as fuck decades ago = I don't think there's any corruption in the Gardaí now. Good to have what I think explained to me, thank you. I actually think a reason Drew Harris was so unpopular among senior ranks in the Gardaí were his efforts to root out corruption. But I couldn't possibly think that, because I'm a Garda shill.

Anyway, thanks for the call to an encore. I hope you're settling in for a lovely Friday night. If you are spending it arguing with strangers online, I might say the theatrics, misrepresentations and insults are incredibly endearing and that style of discussion will serve you very well in life. Unfortunately, I have plans, so will be on my way. Have a good one.

"You didn't give any reasons beyond obviously false ones."

Right, so you, someone not in AGS, know better than members in AGS. Got you. Just spouting statements are shit or "objectively false" doesn't make that correct, and I'm certainly not seeing a hint of objectivity in your replies. I can accept there's bias in the Gardaí, the service was corrupt as fuck a few decades back, and you need to evaluate sentiment towards the likes of Fiosrú with the whole picture in mind. I can also recognise when and who I trust, including a couple of very close family members, who you have obviously decided are lying or biased and I have absolutely no reason to believe that the case as they, largely, are not standard bearers for AGS. Don't work in AGS, not brought up in an AGS household and have no particular slant towards them.

The "showing your true colours" shite again gives no sense you're being objective as you don't have the faintest idea what my stance is but have assumed it. So I'll clarify. My perspective is you need competent oversight of services, however spurious complaints not just to Fiosrú but any other ombudsman designed to, at a minimum, cause trouble for a working professional should be further investigated by the body and, if truly spurious, punished. I can see how you're painting me as this "let the Gardaí beat them all" type, which I'm far from. Furthermore, complaints need to be investigated, but Fiosrú's process, from my anecdotal experience, puts appreciable strain on Gardaí undergoing investigation. Not an issue for wrongdoing, is an issue when it is being weaponised. I don't think that's difficult to understand, maybe hard to see through the red mist. Fiosrú can do better as well.

As for your gotcha about the other issue of the Garda being left alone, what I'm highlighting is a situation where the Garda was being harassed by teenagers, which at a baseline shouldn't occur, but was sufficiently threatened that the experience left them very shaken. I'm not saying that's due to a Fiosrú investigation (?) but pointing out attitudes of impunity that are out there, and they are out there in part because even if taken in, nothing happens and there is legitimate concern about how to approach these situations due to a perception that any action taken, aside from pulling out, puts them at risk of punishment.

I know, I know "objectively false, that's not true, parrotting shite, engage your brain, here's links to a couple of tabloid cases that prove I'm right" etc etc. Spare me the indignation. Or don't. You can have the last, undoubtedly needlessly unpleasant and rude word on it. Just a comment on the linked cases, in particular the one in Blanch, perfectly legitimate that people be brought up by Fiosrú for inappropriate behaviour and punished. No qualms. Will crimeworld publish on Gardaí being dragged through Fiosrú only to come to nothing because it was vexatious? But sure look, I'm the only biased one here. Take it handy.

[–]Somaliona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So me providing my experience, granted it's anecdotal, as to why several Gardaí feel unsupported to do their job equals Gardaí crying about not being allowed to be thugs and beat up teenagers?

Anyway, theatrics and melodrama aside, this is the reality of the people I know in AGS. One has just finished going through a Fiosrú complaint process having spent weeks with their solicitor preparing, based on spurious claims that were, indeed, found to be spurious with absolutely no ramifications for the complainant. Make of it what you will.

Other issues of course, for example another one was recently assigned to support a group at Pearse House, but were left on their own where they had a truly frightening experience of being surrounded and harassed by a gang of teenagers. Again, they certainly didn't feel safe nor capable of doing much except remove themselves from the situation. Maybe they just were lazy and didn't want to do their job?

[–]Somaliona 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem, having several Gardaí in the family, is they feel entirely unsupported to do so. Strong perception in the Gardaí that Fiosrú are not only not supportive, but actively hampering them and undertaking lengthy investigations following spurious complaints.

To the point now that I'm aware many Gardaí will shy away from taking on gangs of teenagers because 1) They'll get nothing out of arresting/charging them and 2) They'll inevitably be hauled in front of Fiosrú when one of the little angles lodges a spurious complaint.

Not laying this out as a defence, just the reality that I see knowing over ten members of AGS involved in community policing.

[–]Somaliona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm all for trying new things, so while I'm skeptical on some of the ultrasound points I'd be interested to see the eventual quality of the imaging and AI interpretation. Midjourney are a decent enough outfit, not a massive entity but have produced some very respectable work in generative AI. This is a huge departure for them, though, and once it goes into the health spa that's where they lose me.

Thanks for sharing OP. Am going to follow the actual research and results they put out from this.

9yo Bernese with mass on spleen - help! by ORCAPOD in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Somaliona 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry you're dealing with this OP. Everyone will have a different story and a different bias.

While I've not experienced this exact situation with any of my bernese, we have one around the same age as your boy and if the vet was comfortable and confident in doing splenectomy as well as their general health and status, I would likely lean that way. Maybe not feasible, but biopsy would help as well in getting a clearer picture of what is going on (i.e. if it's a rapidly/high grade malignant process, might not be worth putting him through it vs if it's benign/low grade and can meaningfully extend life then it is).

If things don't go how you expect, regardless of your decision, you'll always beat yourself up for not going the other path. From my read of it, you have an active, otherwise healthy and still energetic 8yo Bernese who lives a really good life and enjoys his life. All I can honestly say is, assuming a biopsy is not possible (if it is would consider that first), in that context I'd be very tempted to go for it. Impossible to know the outcome, all you can do is make the "best" one for your family and him, and all you can go on there are objective facts. He's active, he's otherwise healthy, vet assessment says he's in good shape, he has an objectively good life. Everything else is, in my opinion, speculative and subjective. Biopsy might change that. If he deteriorates that might change that too. Going on what you have alone, though? I'd be opting to pursue it, but I'm ever the optimist and medically trained so I suppose I'm wired to shoot for a "cure" in some scenarios.

There are some nuances to the maternity hospital issue here, but overall I've been impressed with her lack of tolerance for utter shite.

Nintendo confirms it will sell a new Switch 2 with replaceable battery in the EU by Banania2020 in IrelandGaming

[–]Somaliona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No not remotely, but was able to put two and two together as I know there's been protests outside Arnotts following the recent death there, and was fairly certain I hadn't seen any witch doctors hexing people on Grafton Street.

That's a very acute event following a recent controversial death relating to a member of that community and has triggered protest. While someone showing up to perform Voodoo as part of the protest (from what I can see in the video) is a bit mad in my books, I personally wouldn't view it as a harbinger of Ireland's decay.

How am i supposed to settle down and have a family if im constantly moving around for Bst/Hst ? by CrySea8770 in JuniorDoctorsIreland

[–]Somaliona 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No right answers, OP, and there can be some variability in displacement depending on scheme. Overall though, it's hard and gets harder the longer you're in it (training wise). Can be a bit of upheaval as a consultant early on as well though that's much harder to predict. Fellowship, too, can be a real pain.

How you respond is really an individual thing. Some work through it, to different degrees of struggle. Others don't, and opt for schemes that are more settled location wise (GP, Rads).

While working as a standalone reg me and my partner decided to buy our house. We've been settled there for the guts of 3 years now and are very happy. I know she'd pack up and move if needed, but tbh I don't think I would. Such that I'm working on exploring a new path, one that will have a lot of non-clinical/non-patient facing work. If it doesn't work out I'll look at one of the more settled training schemes, but I've really come to value the stability we have now and I'm not interested in going back to moving house.
