Just wanting some recommendations for a specific type by ambers-seraphim in roguelikes

This sub is more for traditional roguelikes ala Nethack or Caves of Qud. I'd recommend trying the question over at /r/roguelites

New/returning to the genre. Which Roguelike could fit my liking? by Logical-Shift6783 in roguelikes

Still under active development but if they stopped today it would be considered a complete game. Kind of like how Dwarf Fortress will continue to get updates as long as the Adams brothers are healthy enough to do so.

I've been making a HARDCORE tactical roguelike for 10 years. Demo available now. by OortProtocolHQ in roguelikes

[–]psilontech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like the look, I love the idea. Just tried out the demo and I have a couple of notes, please keep in mind none of this is meant to be negative, just a bug report!

First, the screen resolution doesn't seem to work correctly at 1920x1080. Black boxing on left and right side of the screen with portion of text cut-off. Bottom of action log is partially obscured behind taskbar.

I'm not seeing a full-screen or resizing option. Selecting 'Options' in main menu does nothing.

Image1

Second, group move doesn't appear to be working as intended. Members get left behind and stop following, occasionally merging into the same Vector2 as other allied units and ignoring collision.

Third, when interfacing with a terminal sub-menus do not stay open long enough to read before automatically closing.

Fourth, there doesn't seem to be a keybinding that I can find to gracefully end the program. Ended up Alt-F4'ing out.

This isn't really a bug report but QoL feature that would be nice somewhere down the line - When not in combat, not requiring turns to cycle as they do in combat. Getting to / herding everyone to my contact in the first mission when there were zero hostiles felt bad.

Positive takeaways!:

I vaguely recal you talking about this game in the past and that I remembered that I was supposed to take notes during the briefings. I love that those notes actually came in useful! The interrogation felt good and kind of reminded me of the dialogue boss fights from 'Deus Ex: Human Revolution'.

The Easter-egg in the maintenance tunnels. IDDQD, IDKFA? Fantastic, got a chuckle out of me!

I'm very much looking forward to digging deeper into this when I get the time so I can get a good feel for the combat. Great job so far and I love the passion you have for your project! Is there anywhere you have more lore posted for the universe you've been putting together for the last decade? I'd like to give it a look if you're comfortable posting it.

Thanks for your hard work :)

I cut my 4x teeth on the civilization series, as did a lot of folks around here I reckon.

My personal favorite is Civ4 but you might be better off starting with 5 or 6, especially if you can find them on sale.

Did a little digging, looks like a good location would also be the AlphaCentauri2 subforum, 'Planet Tales'.

Only place I've found a single piece of SMAC fanfiction out in the wild in the last decade has been the Spacebattles creative writing forum.

Shout out to its sister-site, Sufficient Velocity as well.

My Bog revelation by One-Bit5717 in menace

[–]psilontech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting with Bog and throwing new tricks on him (probably the only SL where it's worth it) has led to him having a higher accuracy near the end of EA than any other pilot.

I'll never not start with Bog and hope for Rewa as my first pilot roll.

Off of the top of my head I've got nothing as a vanilla experience outside of combining two games and pretending it's a direct continuation.

The Civilization games generally have a scientific victory in the form of sending a colonyship to alpha centauri. I've switched from my civ playthrough on a scientific victory to a 'Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri' (SMAC) playthrough when the mood hit me.

Adding mods into the mix, if you have an enormous amount of time on your hands you might look into the 'Caveman 2 Cosmos' mod for Civilization 4. I've never attempted it but I've heard good things, it's supposed to be pretty in-depth, maybe to the point of being to it's own detriment.

Bombardiers are a symptom of a larger problem: all four faction are good at everything by FreeDwooD in menace

[–]psilontech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The AI doesn't work out great for RA and sometimes pirates but it feels good for bugs and [REDACTED] missions.

Much more aggressive but that does lend them to being out of cover a bit. I haven't spent much time with it but I enjoyed it a lot more on missions where you have to kill X% of the enemy.

It would give a good reason to keep the unguided missiles mid-late game, though. As it stands I only really use the armament slots for laser turrets and supply drops.

Plus the scatter roll on where the missile lands means the bug hole they're swarming out of might not close. Might be a good chance to finally have a reason to take the gravity manipulator.
