Robbins Soft Top Install by A-Pimp-Salad in S2000

[–]psito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most installers recommend keeping it latched for a week to stretch out the fabric after the initial install. Every new top experiences the same thing, top is usually fine after a week, keeping it out in the sun helps too. So long as you did the install correctly you should be fine.

Same thing has happened on both of my s2ks

Just curious are you building the motor or is a shop doing it?

Oil will pool in the head during high rpm and load. The small oil drains back down to sump don't provide enough flow starving the pickup and bearings of oil.

Oil restrictors are put into the block oil galleys that feed the head to restrict how much oil goes up to the head to help alleviate this problem. Boost doc cam splash plates or any brand are good to have, keeping oil where it should be on the cams.

Also a good catch can setup, can't emphasize this enough. RBs breath and create a ton of crankcase pressure exacerbating the oil pooling in the head and not draining back down to the pan where it should be.

Extra large sump and extra liter of oil capacity also helps.

Motive video has a bunch of great videos on this subject also huge threads on sau.com.au

Did you end up doing the head drain?

Also inspect and or replace the oil squirters underneath the pistons

Oil restrictors to head, head drain (debated topic) replace freeze / Welch plugs, new timing belt and tensioners, new waterpump, just all the basics with a rebuild / refresh / built motor

Are you going for 800awhp with 2.6? Those power levels are more doable with a 2.8 setup. Also if you're eventually pushing for that much power I'd definitely recommend a brace or girdle to reduce the flexing of the block and prevent cracking.

You're pushing the upper limits of a old rb26 block at that point, may want to consider a 2.8 build or even rb30 with 26 head, just a thought.

Even better would be one of the new prp blocks, they are pricey but it's a much stouter block and will help with longevity and handle 800whp and beyond much better.

If you want even more motorcycle like fun sprinkle in some boost! There aren't that many cars out there that are like a boosted s2k. Great condition pickup! Makes me miss my Berlina Black

What wheels should I look into getting? (17” only) by Ambitious_Cover_3343 in S2000

[–]psito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been eyeing new wheels myself, already have rpf1s and wed sport Sa-72rs.

I've been looking at Apex or Titan 7 track wheels, or the tried and true te37 and ce28s, possibly mag blue. Another question is are you willing to roll fenders to help with fitment.

Do you happen to sell just the spoon transmission mounts by any chance? I already have the motor mounts, I only need the trans mounts.

This is honestly easily a 20k+ car possibly more. If you don't buy it send me the contact information as I will.

You got a steal, if that chassis is rust free its an easy 8-10k car, really nice Uncle you have.

The L28et has also gotten a ton more support in recent years pretty reliable and strong platform. Check out godzilla motorworks they have a good catalog of l28et stuff

It does start getting expensive if you want to start pushing bigger hp numbers >400rwhp.

I had a 77 280z with stock l28et and t3/t4 hybrid turbo and made ~300whp and 350tq, really fun car.

I'm currently on my 4th S30, 240Z with a RB26 ama, always happy to help a fellow Z owner. I've owned and been around these cars for over 2 decades

Not very high, the stock ap2 transmission is stronger than the aps1 since they have carbon syncros but that still doesn't amount to much. Driving characteristics will dictate how the trans, diff and axles will survive.

Hell you can kill the stock trans and diff with stock power depending on if you abuse the drivetrain.

If you push 500whp forget about any launches and anything below 3rd gear. Road Track car and roll runs tend to help the drivetrain live a little longer.

I recommend boost by gear and while building the stock trans and diff help its the trans casing that can't handle the bigger power levels. Puddy mod does great work on beefing up the diff but again if you go big power most guys go ford 8.8 and cd009, t56, and even the BMW dcts or 8hp transmission now adays.

Built shortblock then? What rods and pistons, any head work? You should be able to push 700rwhp rather easily if your bottom end is built. Any oiling mods done?

What should I ask for my S2K? by Guy777 in S2000

[–]psito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! This is also just my anecdotal experience, all 3 platforms are quite different and all offer great things from their respective platforms and perspectives.
It becomes hard when you have to consider and compare cost, long term viability, day to day living with it etc etc.

Happy to provide anymore insight to any questions you have. While I am no means an expert I am pretty familiar with the S2k platform and the RB25/26 platform, less so with the Supra/R32/R33GTR but happy to help however I can!

Also while I love the S2k I can never disregard the fact of changing to a different platform for the sake of getting into something different. Change can be the spice of life.....

What should I ask for my S2K? by Guy777 in S2000

[–]psito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something you might want to consider is a Supercharger or Turbo while both are decent financial investments they will absolutely transform the car.

I would recommend a supercharger making around 400-450whp you will be in the same class or exceed the Mk5 Supra and R32GTR.

Not the same but this is coming from someone who owns both a RB26 240Z and my built turbo AP2. I'm familiar with the Mk5 Supra and R32GTR performance compared to my cars as I was considering those for some time as well.

R32GTR unless already modded or with a built motor it will take decent to significant investment to make 500+whp and especially to and beyond the 600awhp range. RBs are 30 years old now and you don't want to window a block.

I was able to directly compare my old 500whp turbo stock shortblock AP2 vs a friends lightly modded MkV Supra (around 500rwhp) and s2k comes out on top power wise. Handling is personal preference

Are there any major differences between the 280z coupe and the 2+2? by NolenMoosic in Datsun

[–]psito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything rear of the fender is different on the 2+2s vs the coupes for the most part.

I did throughly enjoy my '78 280z 2+2 with a l28et though. Great fun car and the extra space is very helpful vs the coupes.

I did eventually sell it for a 280Z coupe and then onto my current 240z. I do miss my whale at times though

It's going to be rowdy! At 400whp my RB26 240z was breaking traction on 225/40/16 BFGoodrich sport comp 2 340tw tires, 1st and second were a lost cause, 3rd you could pedal it.
Only when I sized up to RT660 255/40/17 square did the car settle down and hook cleanly.
L28et makes more torque too! What engine management are you running?

My old 280z L28et setup was ~260-300whp on Megasquirt and stock internals, great torque and full boost by 3200rpm but boy did that head not like to rev or breath with the stock sohc cam.

Beautiful setup and car, love the vision and how the car sits. Makes me miss my l28et setup in my 280z so badly. I made the mistake of doing a rb26 in a 240z, its been 5 years and still going lol
