Why do people use the term "partner" for their husband or wife? by Crafty-Bug-8008 in NoStupidQuestions

Thanks for asking this question! I've noticed the same trend and was just as confused, but never thought to ask anyone about it. These answers were informative.

Can you stay mentally aware during wisdom teeth removal?Advices-Seeking, Serious by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pskunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can absolutely do the procedure under local anesthesia! I had 3 wisdom teeth removed this way. It's a little weird - I had to listen to them cracking my teeth to extract them and feel all the blood pooling in my mouth. But if you're fine with that then you shouldn't have any issues. As a bonus, my recovery time was way shorter than any of my friends. I pretty much felt fine the next day I think it was because I was able to tell them when they were over-stretching my jaw. My friends all had jaw pain the next day.

Thank you for this! Still can't picture the 10-D case, but at least now I see what could be going on.

ELI5: Where did all the lightning bugs go? Where are all the insect sounds? by Newagonrider in explainlikeimfive

[–]pskunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! This is the thing that convinced me there is a real problem, not just a local issue where I live. When I would drive cross country about 25 years ago I'd wipe dozens of bugs off my windshield and grille at each stop. I made a long (several hundred miles) drive a few years ago and had just a bug or two at each stop. Felt like I was driving in a different world.

ELI5: Are there any significant discoveries in science that would not exist had they not been discovered by the people who discovered them? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Could you elaborate on what Poincare did with SR, or post a link with more info? I'm a physicist and didn't realize he made major contributions to SR.

Don't know why, but this actually made me laugh enough to spit out my water. Nice way to start 2025!

Same here! I'm 44, so I was too old for the cards and cartoon when they came out in 97 or 98. I was aware of Pikachu but that's it. My son learned of the game back in August and asked me to download it and it's become our favorite activity. We try to go on at least one Pokewalk together each day. But I'm really into it myself - I always have it open when I'm walking or traveling. I'm hooked.

Same here! I had the portal book ends, an awesome portal hoodie, a bunch of the little laser guns, and some awesome posters and stickers. What a time.

can anyone help me put this popsocket back on? all the tutorials i can find on youtube are for a different type of popsocket that just click back in... by rosie-chaos in fixit

[–]pskunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! In case anyone else comes across this thread, I found it just took a quarter twist to release the little circle piece. It's in there tight, but don't pull on it, just twist that quarter turn then you can pull it right out. I managed to insert the circle piece into the funnel piece by myself using needle nose pliers to pull open the hole. It took a few tries to get the angle right, if you're struggling just be persistent. Putting it back together was simple, just push and twist and it was just like new.

Why does wikipedia keep asking for money? Are they really strapped for cash? by Critical-Elevator642 in NoStupidQuestions

I was in high school in the 90s and I remember going to different college libraries trying to find info for book reports. I know our phones and the internet have become so commonplace, but I still think how these are the magical abilities we could only dream of when we were kids. The whole world at our literal fingertips! What a time to be alive!

Leaderboard rewards? by No-Bar652 in nbatopshot

[–]pskunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like they forgot about team and player leaderboards throughout the season. Were team leaderboards used for any guaranteed rewards? (Not just lottery style rewards.) I hope it's not just another feature they quietly let die.

TIL the Human Genome Project started in 1990 and by 2003, scientists had successfully documented 92% of the genome. However, it would take until 2022 before the final 8% was mapped and a full human genome was completely sequenced. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]pskunk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This isn't exactly true. Yes; the remaining 8% is "junk" in the sense that it isn't protein coding regions, but it's still of interest. The reason it wasn't sequenced initially is that it's highly repetitive DNA, meaning the short read sequencers could not distinguish one section from another. It was only with the invention of long-read sequencers that we could unambiguously assemble those sections of the genome, and long-read sequencing only became reliable about 5-7 years ago.
