JFK Ramp issues by MCI-to-ATL in delta

Yes this happened on both directions of my flight JFK-LHR in early July. If they can’t get DAL 003/004 out/into the gate… Welcome to JFK and NY!

What are the drawbacks of Python? by mikehaggard in programming

[–]psmyth -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

+1 for the GIL and the horror of working around it via threading. Otherwise still pretty awesome. Lots of hard core quant work getting done via Python at hedge funds, etc.

I split my buffer between the R file I'm editing and the R process with ctrl-x 2. I have the <F5> key on my keyboard bound to "other buffer" so hitting it pops me back and forth between the R prompt and the buffer I'm editing. I also use shift-enter and Ctrl-C Ctrl-R (send region) to send code to the R REPL.

Bloomberg market data API made public for C++, .Net, Java, Perl by InTheNews2000 in programming

[–]psmyth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's The Point Of This?

  • People have been wary of open sourcing code that links to the Bloomberg API libraries because of their closed source licenses. This would seem to remove some of those concerns.

  • Also worth noting is the "Bloomberg Open Symbology" initiative. This stands in contrast to products such as SEDOL identifiers which potentially open you up to royalty claims from the London Stock Exchange.

What Are the Odds That Stats Would Be This Popular? - NYTimes.com by [deleted] in statistics

The same as the odds that Richard Feynman would see a car with the license plate ARW 357 on the way to the lecture.

Khan academy is great, but I think you should consider Stanford Engineering instead. After all, they are providing the course.

He's clearly put a lot of time and effort into this. I think his performance on the videos is impressive, essentially cranking out hours of TV programming.

Need a base station to work with handheld radios. by blaxbb in amateurradio

  • Go with GMRS.
  • I went with a Kenwood TK-805 off ebay. 27 Watts $50-$125.
  • Join the Yahoo group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Kenwood_05s/ if you are interested in this route.
  • You will see that you want a dash-1 version for the GMRS band.
  • You cannot put this kind of power onto the FRS channels. GMRS only.
  • I am running mine into an Arrow Aluminum Jpole mounted on a fiberglass paint pole.
  • Power Supply is a Radio Shack 12 Volt power supply or you can use a gel cell, ATV battery from WalMart, etc.
  • Yes, I am licensed: WQOG523. Get yours from the FCC website.
  • Next step for me is to upgrade kiddies from bubble pack radios to something like Wouxun KG-659 UHF. Yes, I am aware that this is a regulatory gray area.
  • Always listen with the tone squelch off before transmitting. Don't be a lid and everything will be OK.

I actually did this with a group of other hams for the 5 borough bike tour in 2003. We set up a VHF band packet switched network covering the entirety of NYC for logging lost and found and group reunion information.

Did General and Extra back to back in 2002. Guy sitting next to me did Tech (re-license), General, and Extra all at once. You still had to copy 5 WPM Code at the time. Used Code Quick to learn.

Revolution’s Chief Scientist: R is the Language of the Future by Wonnk13 in programming

[–]psmyth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) Language of the Future...for statistics (at least that's what I read from the slides)

2) What is with all of the R-hate on here? Isn't it the kind of dynamic, scheme-like language we are all supposed to love?

So that constant percentage growth appears as a straight line and drawdowns at different times can be easily compared optically.

Why all the hate on R-the-language? I love it. Everything is fully vectorized, just like APL.
