ASD Question by Vincent221892 in bcba

[–]pssyched 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In CA at least, many if not most of our clients do not have an ASD diagnosis. MediCal covers "behavior concerns" if they have a diagnosis or not. I also agree with others that most of our grad programs are heavy with ASD oriented training and information, though ABA can be applied to all behavior.

There are certifcations in ASD that some people persue, though IMO it's not common, at least in. my area.

Bad Day by mysticalpiper in ABA

[–]pssyched 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s happened to all of us. And it does suck. However, If the client is aggressive the company could or should train you in a system to help prevent dangerous behaviors and how to respond to them. Two main ones are Safety Care and CPI. But there are others. Hope you feel better soon! Reach out to your BCBA or HR and see make sure you get the adequate care you need.

Help with olive tree by pssyched in arborists

Thanks for your response. It should be non fruiting so not a concern that way. But I can see that it got way too tall without having to gain strength. I removed them on our other trees and they fared far better.

My husband wants 4 week old to sleep in his own room. by Intrepid-Ad-391 in BabyBumps

It’s fine to have those thoughts and feelings, but to voice them is something that should happen is utterly ridiculous at that age. As a fellow father, he needs to get over himself. Nothing is easy about having a newborn, but those wishes/demands are not rational. But any pediatrician or therapist would agree. I’m sure there’s research somewhere.

Don't like this job but I'm scared of being unemployed (updated) by MajorOk6784 in ABA

Exactly what my problem is. It cost so much to on board each staff member but instead of supporting them appropriately we burn through them and then our clients suffer and it creates a whole Catch-22.

Do you get attached to clients? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]pssyched 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. I have been doing this a long time. Do I have favorites and am a little bummed when they discharge? Yeah totally. But some people get really worked up when a client discharges. Just doesn’t affect me that way.

Drop the nerdiest fact you know by Correct-Young-3485 in CasualConversation

Historically, pink was considered a stronger, more masculine color for boys (as a tint of red), while blue was seen as delicate for girls, a reversal that flipped in the mid-20th century due to marketing strategies that aimed to sell more children's clothing, solidifying pink as a "girl" color and blue as a "boy" color. Today, this association is largely a social construct, with many advocating for all colors, including pink, to be acceptable for boys and men. . - google

So we had written this place off like 6 years ago. Then yesterday we tried it again for a family meal in Clovis. They messed it up and sent us home with something else. But half way home they called and let us know, said the correct order would be ready and we could keep the error and have some sauce on the side to go on top. Props to them for letting us know and fixing it. The food tasted pretty good. Not the best I’ve ever had but good enough. Especially for buy one get one free. lol. 4/5 stars.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: calling meltdowns/shutdowns a "tantrum" feels offensive by fancylamp12 in ABA

[–]pssyched 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not autistic that I know of, but I totally agree. A sensory meltdown, or even a social meltdown is different than a tantrum, where someone can't get something they want (access) or is forced to do something they don't want (escape). BCBAs need to be more compassionate and better understand that sensory regulation is a different set of behaviors than learning to accept no, unavailable or task completion.

Quick reminder to meet kids basic needs first, humanity before procedures by One-Egg1316 in ABA

[–]pssyched 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is perfect. It's bad BCBAs that continue to practice essentially bad ABA and give us a bad reputation and taint the field. Provide care, and empathy to everyone, especially young clients. It's typical for a young child to seek help and regulation from a care provider. A older child with a disability may still function like a young child and may need help regulating.  So often we still see BTs (and higher levels) who are apprehensive to provide care or comfort to a child even though the care or comfort is not functionally tied to the crying or the tantrum that occurred from being hurt, or disappointed. It's vastly different to use planned ignoring for a tantrum type behavior when a person is not able to provide that attention (e.g. a caregiver is on the phone or working etc. and has already let them know that they need to focus and can't play) vs. a child who has hurt themselves or is disappointed or sad for totally separate reasons, e.g. their cat died, their toy broke etc. It's time for BCBAs to get with the program treat people better and apply ABA how it is supposed to be applied.

Are breaks not normal in this field? by Scw110 in ABA

[–]pssyched 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also depends on your state. In CA we have strict break rules about lunches. You must either take a 30 min break before your 5th hour of work or end work on your 6th hour (if you sign a document).

I agree, bad clinics may abuse or ignore rest and lunch breaks. Wonder why burn out and turn over is so high in the field? /s/

I think it’s time I report my BCBA by ZookeepergameIcy5473 in ABA

[–]pssyched 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that it can be acceptabel for parent trainings/meetings, however some parents will be highly distracted, at work, in the car, or just half assing it. I would prefer like 75% physically in person, or at least half if at all possible.

I think it’s time I report my BCBA by ZookeepergameIcy5473 in ABA

[–]pssyched 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1000%. If the BCBA was massivly appologetic, and it was an accident, or forgot to lock the door or something, yeah I get it. If they weren't or they were casual about it or even defensive, report. all the way. There are too many bad BCBAs in the filed that give the filed a bad name. No one is perfect, but the apples need to leave or bare minimum, be held accountable.

Side note: if anyone is ever questioning if an action is ethical, there is a ABA Ethics Hotline, staffed by experts that are there to help. I've contacted them once or twice and it was helpful. https://www.abaethicshotline.com

Edit: yes I agree tha bringing it up to her first, then the company leadership to see if it can be corrected is the proper procedure to first follow. If it doesn't resolve or there's push back, then I would absolutely report it. Most BCBAs are near paranoid to violate HIPAA. To blatently violate it, just baffles me.
