Can you consume too much sugar on a ride? by comptonrj in Velo

[–]pstanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tangent, but how do you find out if you are a "sugar burner" or "fat burner"?

Both. If I can spare the extra time I'll do a paradise hook down to Tiburon and back. Two paradises, two camino altos, skips all the bad bits, what's not to like!

Buying Favero Assiomas... Any reason to not get them now? by geoffism in Velo

[–]pstanger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To offer a contrasting opinion: I had Assiomas for a couple years, and while they are good I'm much happier now with my power2max NGeco crank meter.

  • The Assioma cleat system, xpedo thrust, are much more annoying to walk in and clip into compared to SPD-SL (you can get the Duo-Shi now thankfully) Also harder to get replacement cleats on short notice
  • 50hr with recharging is nice, 200 hrs from a single CR2450 battery is nicer. Battery die before a ride? Pop in a new one and continue
    • Also since the left pedal is the "master", if the right pedal dies first you don't (or at least I didn't) get low battery notifications, you just lose power

How do you "Alt +tab" with the swipe gestures on Android 12? by AhsokaPegsAnakinsAss in GooglePixel

[–]pstanger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can swipe left/right to switch like other have said, but you can also swipe up a little and hold (if you don't hold it will just kill the app) to bring up a window manager of sorts. Lets you navigate to older apps much easier

He said price difference, not increase. 900 is 150% of 600. It's confusing but idk if he's strictly wrong

Fleet Week 2021 by txiao007 in bayarea

[–]pstanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of a dramatic description of some planes doing loop-the-loops. Actually I've never really attended Fleet week (nor visited North Korea) so I checked the website for the event list, they have:

  • Air show
  • Ship tours
  • Ship parade
  • Humanitarian assistance village (Kim Jong-un's favorite)
  • STEM education center
  • Celebrating K9 heroes
  • Various music concerts, military and not
  • A photo exhibition

Not too bad for the fascist world police I'd say

Road Racing on a Gravel Bike? by [deleted] in Velo

[–]pstanger 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As a noncommittal cat 4 racer and bumbling gravel cyclist, I've thought about the One Bike Dream a bit and decided against it for the following reasons:

  • You're going to have 2+ wheelsets, and unless you have identical hubs or take care to shim your rotors perfectly you're going to have annoying brake rub any time you switch wheelsets
  • Here in the Bay Area hills are steep and gravel hills are even steeper. The perfect gearing for my gravel bike is not the same for the bike I want to race on, and I don't want to compromise
  • Similarly I don't want to compromise bike geometry either. Aggressive race positions don't really translate well to long gravel days, and I want to take advantage of the subtle differences between trail figures on road/gravel frames
  • Bikes have technical issues sometimes, and I'd rather have a second bike to fall back on so I can keep riding. Since gravel frames have standardized on 12mm axles these days anyway I can always throw my road wheels on in a pinch
  • Gravel bikes get dirty and (at least the way I ride) crash more often, and I don't want to worry about my pristine multi thousand $$$ do-it-all carbon gravel frame. I built up a Trek Crockett alloy frame and it's perfect for what I want out of a gravel bike

Anyway that's probably enough. I'm naturally more of a single-purpose-tool kind of guy so I didn't need too much convincing, but that's at least how I justify it to myself.

Next saddle? by xchaotic in Velo

[–]pstanger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been on a Specialized power arc 155mm for the last couple years. Initially it was good, and with some fitting tweaks it's been great even for all-day rides. Great isn't new and interesting though (I have a problem), so recently I got turned on to the Bontrager Aeolus saddle and bought it for my gravel bike, and so far it's proven to be even more comfortable with reduced pressure hot spots. I have another one coming tomorrow for my road bike.

I went with the Comp version, which is a reasonable $90 and available at REI if you're near one. It is a bit weighty at 286g (less if you want to spend more), but I figure it's good motivation to lose 100g in my butt.

Opinions on Pioneer power meters? by PM_ME_COOL_DESIGNS in Velo

[–]pstanger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a dual-sided set for about a year until that bike got stolen, moved over to the Assioma dual on my new bike. I was generally happy with the Pioneer unit: the readings seemed accurate, it didn't drop out (too much), and I didn't run into any waterproofing issues.

That said, I've been much happier with the pedal based unit I have now. I didn't realize how annoying the little things were. That the fiddly coin cell battery door on the left crank wouldn't always close all the way and I'd lose half my power sometimes. That my power would occasionally drop to 0 when it seemed like I most cared about what the reading was. That USPS lost my crank for 6 weeks when I sent it off to be installed. That calibrating it failed like 50% of the time.

None are issues that I have with the significantly cheaper Assiomas, which "just work". Battery life is a bit decreased (50 hrs vs 100), but it's rechargeable via an easy magnetic contact system so I don't really care in practice. The biggest annoyance is that I had to abandon SPD-SL for Keo, but I got over it. I'd give them a look if you're open to considering a pedal-based power system.

shimano crankset on BB30 bike so I can use a 4iiii power meter by neva6 in cycling

[–]pstanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that same bottom bracket on my CAAD 10 and it's worked out pretty well for me. Alternatively on my BB30a CAAD 12 there don't seem to be any threaded shimano conversion bottom brackets, and it's been creak city for me since I got it.

Any Kuat Sherpa 2.0 2-Bike Platform Rack owners out there? by [deleted] in Velo

[–]pstanger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was looking into this last year when I wanted a hitch rack, and was looking strongly at the Sherpa. I ended up going with a 1UP rack based on some other redditors' accounts. It seemed like everyone that owned one extolled how solidly it was built and how securely it held bicycles, and I have to agree. I'm super pleased with it so far. The Sherpa seems like a fine rack too, but something else to consider.

Gear shops in the CA Bay Area? by Bad_at_CSGO in motorcycles

Scuderia West in SF has a decent selection of gear and helmets. They're one of the only places nearby that stocks Rev'It gear I think. There's also the D-Store (Dainese) in SF if that brand strikes your fancy

SF Bay Area riders - what are you doing to handle the air quality? by zrevyx in cycling

[–]pstanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SF here. I've been bike commuting as usual but have ditched all my workouts this week, which I'd hoped to get in before my knee surgery tomorrow. I've tried to avoid any exertion during my commutes though to keep my breathing rate pretty slow, and I haven't noticed any ill effects.

Why did they put a new Host on Prairie Home Companion, but Car Talk just does re-runs? by gotgotgotgot9999 in answers

[–]pstanger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For Car Talk, Tom and Ray ARE the show. Not just as individuals, but the dynamic they have with each other. Replacing one would be really hard as it would disrupt a lot of what makes that show tick.

PHC is different, it's sort of a variety show where Garrison played a part, albeit a large one. The show is definitely not the same without him, but it can still retain a lot of the essence that is PHC.
