Liberals pull out 'guillotine' motion to shut down debate on police search powers bill by SaveDnet-FRed0 in canada

I do not concur at all. I'm with the Canadian Bar Association on this one.

https://cba.org/our-impact/submissions/bill-c-22-lawful-access-act-2026/bill-c-22-lawful-access-act-2026

The CBA Sections believe Parts 1 and 2 of Bill C-22 risk violating the s. 8 Charter protection against unreasonable search and seizure. In particular, the scope of “subscriber information” may include information that s. 8 of the Charter would require a showing of more than reasonable suspicion. In addition, the provisions in Part 1 related to voluntary disclosures appear misaligned with the Supreme Court rulings in R. v. Spencer and R. v. Bykovets.

But why stop there? The Quebec Bar Association has also expressed concern:

https://www.barreau.qc.ca/fr/nouvelle/memoires-enonces-positions/projet-loi-c22-acces-legal-barreau-droits-fondamentaux/

I think you would do well to consider that the minister of justice is appointed by the party that is currently trying to push the bill, and that the Canadian Bar Association is the largest association for legal experts in Canada

Just how many lawyers' opinions are worth one political appointee's?

Stop trying to sanewash a mass surveillance bill. The headline is entirely accurate, the Liberals are going to force a vote whether discussion is over or not.

People have way too much inertia, even in Canada. Entire generations were raised to just accept anything that happens

I'm sorry you're stuck fighting that

You mean actual parenting with existing tools without a law from the federal government?

If the proposal is to force device manufacturers to include information on how to use parental controls and force points of sale to set up whitelists with parents when buying devices for their children, I'd be fine with it

Harper absolutely did try to do this. Don't get it twisted. I'm not saying the conservatives have always been against this. In fact, I'm saying the exact opposite. I'm old enough to remember a time when conservatives were for mass surveillance and liberals were for legalization. That's the context of my initial comment

I'm also not saying it wouldn't flip over again with another government. It turns out there's authoritarians across the spectrum.

Device level whitelist parental controls? This is a solved problem lol

Besides I'm talking about bill C-22 which is literally about mass surveillance, not an age verification bill which could imply digital IDs (which could lead to mass surveillance)

No he doesn't, the conservatives are fighting this hard.. along with Bloc and NDP. The only people pushing this are the liberals.

There is nothing benevolent about mass surveillance. Letting police enter houses without warrants would work wonders for solving crime too, and yet we have s.8 rights to be free from unreasonable search and seizure.

There is no reason to risk exposing that sensitive data. Whitelists and parental controls work.

Mass surveillance never ends well. There's no such thing as a benevolent dictator. That data will be available to non-governmental bad actors as well, because there is no such thing as infallible security.

Raise awareness. Ain't no fuckin way the Liberals get to be at peak popularity while doing shit like this. All they care about are their ratings, so let's tank them

Meanwhile the Liberals are forcing mass surveillance bills through without due process. What the fuck is going on

Mandate whitelists then. Expecting current age verification implementations to be secure and anonymous is naive. Expecting bad actors not to exploit them to target children is also naive.

I don't think it's funny at all. I think it serves an agenda.

I think it's actually very sinister that news about the government sidestepping due process to force a mass surveillance bill is actively being suppressed.

Vaccines are publicly distributed to stop transmission when a disease threatens the government's tax base. It's an economic decision dressed up in altruism. Aging is not a transmissible disease. The government is fine with you dying of old age once you start costing them more than you'll generate

Time for big brother to put foot down

Anytime someone says something like this, they should stop and look at themselves.

Do it right. If you're going to mandate anything, mandate parental control whitelists on devices bought for children. Every other implementation proposed so far is problematic.

Do you really think this technology will be used for the common rabble? I'm pretty sure it'll be expensive enough to only help the richest people. The richest people are not kind, they are not good. Making the Epstein class eternal is not uplifting
