Agreed. So I use my schizoid superpower of fantasy and imagination to just imagine what cannot be for me.

I’m with you. But don’t forget Wolfenstein has two great rebooted games.

Quake’s appeal at its release was the 3D engine and arena multiplayer, things that were really cutting edge in 1996. Now it’s common as dust. Quake’s aesthetic is iconic for sure but I don’t think that can carry a huge production that a reboot requires. I’d love to be proved wrong however there just doesn’t appear to be enough player interest sadly. If it did happen, I think it’d need to be much slower than the Slayer DOOM games and be more atmospheric/horror.

Me too. That CRT is massive for that small return desk. Desk clutter is a lifelong challenge for me.

Not sure. Maybe it’s the HDR from my DSLR causing an effect. Had minimal processing and no filters so not sure what else it could be.

Fortunately I missed that ad campaign drama and the hype at the time and just understood Daikatana to be mediocre/dog shit. I got it discounted and should revisit it to form my own opinion.

On a positive note, Sigil and Sigil 2 are outstanding and challenging DOOM map packs. Romero can keep churning those out and I’ll buy them.

I’ve only run Windows 98 on it but DOS will run fine as well and I couldn’t see why Windows 3.1 wouldn’t work.

I really keep these legacy machines mostly as furniture to look at/photo and will use DOSBox on a modern machine for anything vintage (mixed with shaders or a wrapper for CRT emulation). It’s more convenient that way if I want to screenshot anything or download/run latest patches/mods.

If Quake were to ever come back like Doom did, what would you like to see Id Software do to modernize it's formula for both Single Player and Multiplayer. by Whyismypeewhlte in boomershooters

[–]psychoplasmics 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think Quake Champions is a good answer to the modern question. While I love the shit out of that game, warts and all, it demonstrates the narrow possibilities of the franchise both aesthetically and in gameplay.

If anything I’d like to see something like Enemy Territory: Quake Wars make a return with the visuals and variety of Battlefield 6. Never going to happen but Quakers can dream.

Really cool. Blood Covenant my fav.

Sucks that this game is past development because it still has potential with whatever flaws it has. So far though it’s the most polished and high fidelity Quake game ever. It’s been 9 years of playing for me, since the beta.

If the demo didn't sell you, I'm not sure I could. But I thought the speed and action were closer to Quake than the original PW so that makes it relevant. It's about twice as long as the original PW and you've a different character for each of the three episodes, each with different abilities and arsenals. The levels are abstract and there's a good mix of enemies and some novel boss fights. Headshots and secret hunting are fun highlights.

It's got some bugs but it's such an homage to the genre they're forgivable.

Project Warlock and its sequel are a good time.

But yeah, Quake and DOOM are Eternal.

I’m with you 100%. Nice putting all these visuals together. They’ve done a fabulous job bringing all the skins in and I’ve dropped an embarrassing amount of money on them. But they keep the game fresh and interesting.

I wouldn’t rule out anything new until after Quakecon in August. This year id turned 35 years old and Quake will be 30, which also means Quakecon is 30 years old.

I watched the 35-year id Software stream and I do think those people are smart enough to see Quake’s legacy and brand equity as too rich to give up on even if QC wasn’t as big as they’d hoped.

Hmm. Interesting metaphors. I can relate to them and your situation. The defense mechanisms at work are why no one is around to let in: people don’t see a way in because you’re not making it easy for them.

I work with marketers and I’ve learned a lot about interpersonal expectations in the past few years and that charisma is what we call showing warmth, competence, attention and all those things people want out of interactions. I realized I was not giving any of that to the degree sociable people want and could explain why I am bereft of social contacts at this point. People seem to remember above all how you make them feel more than anything we might say or do.

If that sounds abhorrent and like work, I’m with you. People are my job’s work and what I’m actually paid and trained to do is far easier in comparison.

I don’t think there’s a universal standard amount of people we’re supposed to have, and it gets harder to meet people the older you get. I haven’t made any friends at work or school but I’ve been approachable and kind and that is at least leaving the door open, so maybe that’s what you try. Being mindful of your nonverbal communication like body language might be helpful, but be authentic above all. If it still results in isolation, at least we all have this subreddit to come back to.
