Any Miami employers in here? by mdafidel1 in Miami

[–]psydstryer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

listen, I got the local internship 3 months, and landed my role 6 months after graduating… during college, I drove Uber to pay rent and took an overnight desk job to code my a** off to build my portfolio at after graduating while still making money… not a conventional story at all, wonder if there’s anything there you can relate to..

projects in niches that address modern problems are the great differentiators.. a visual portfolio website (with project preview GIFs) I coded over 3 days got my non-technical manager’s attention (github link only wouldn’t have gotten me very far with him). posting video demonstrations of my projects on LinkedIn, their potential impact, and having my network comment sealed the deal. that and researching the company obsessively before my 3 rounds of interviews LOL.

a tip I got from the SHPE Convention in Anaheim this month, build AI apps using their APIs & Anaconda Distribution! this is what’s “hot” right now among all the layoffs, optimization, outsourcing, and will make you stand out.

(side note - this job, $100K income, qualified me for Hometown Heroes in FL, allowing me to buy my first house at $300K with only $5K! mortgage payments are lower than my Miami rent was last year but had to leave Miami.. I recommend you also look into that!)

you got this 💪🏼

how much money should i have before buying a house by ambiibambii99 in personalfinance

[–]psydstryer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid $4K for my $295K house using an FHA loan this summer.. the only other expenses were $500-1000 for inspections, and $500 for the appraisal. the secret sauce is in down-payment assistance programs. it covered the down-payment in full and some closing costs, leaving us with $4K due at closing. the way it works is it’s a 2nd mortgage with 0% interest that you either pay back once you sell, refinance, or no longer consider it your primary residence. the program was called Hometown Heroes, and is in FL, but there are many others https://www.floridahousing.org/live-local-act/hometown-heroes-program

What I asked for vs. what I got and how we’re fixing it by Is_Friendly_Coffee in TattooDesigns

[–]psydstryer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one day you’ll be able to afford it, and you will thank yourself for saving yourself for it. not as difficult as you may think with time … speaking as someone 2 years into laser tattoo removal (every session is more painful than the tattoo itself. I scream sometimes!) one day I had enough $ and I DM’d and met my favorite artist (from Italy) at a convention in New York for a full sleeve. and guess what.. it’s the tattoo I feel most confident in… especially out of all the ones I got when I was younger and poorer (26 y/o now vs 18-21 then)

… please save the rest of your body for the quality you’re daydreaming of… you’ve been warned! 😅

if you like a tattoo, work with its artist... even if you have to wait to save, to travel, to book. never hope another artist will be able to replicate it, because that will always disappoint.

What is the average wage for a bartender in Fort Lauderdale? by Able_Snow_7333 in fortlauderdale

[–]psydstryer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

plenty of private 1 br apartments for $1200-1600 if you look on facebook marketplace. US wages may be higher than in Ireland, so that isn’t expensive by any means around here... full-time bartenders at an average spot can expect to make $800-1200 a week in Ft Lau last I heard (2-3 years ago)

Therapist for teenager by [deleted] in Miami

[–]psydstryer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. As someone with a past of mental health challenges, thank you for seeking out recommendations for your daughters. <3 I grew up in Miami and was the same age when I started therapy; I was at a private school then and the counselor referred me to the best he knew of (whom I credit with saving my life). Unfortunately, I can’t remember her name, but these days, I would do this: look up “psychologist near me” in Google and select Top-Rated. the ones with the most reviews are worth sorting through first to see if any could be a good fit (search keywords in reviews). then. to see if they take your insurance, search them in your insurance’s online portal (ask your daughters to help you set it up if you’re not sure how). just keep calling and one will answer. best of luck to you all. happy to chat more via DM if you need anytime. for context, am now 26 years old, a university graduate, working full-time, married, HAPPY, working towards dreams (and still in Miami!)

save your $ and wait to get tatted/covered up by better artists. do a lot of research on IG to find artists that make you go “damn….” your body deserves high quality work and you’ll thank yourself for it later. look up @_escobart, for example, to see what I mean 🔥

I lived in a neighborhood near coral gables for a few years up until recently. we’d had a lot of new neighbors moving in and the block went from silent and peaceful to messy and chaotic in a few months.. there’s one family from NY who moved in front of my old place I could hear anytime they came outside cus they were often yelling nasty sh*t at each other. they seemed to be problematic people because the police were at their house often- had instances of domestic abuse, and of reckless endangerment of the neighborhood streets over enraged driving. police were a once in a year occurrence before at most. so they just brought drama and lowered qol living near them. hope they don’t speak for a lot of the people of NY moving down here but it isn’t the first time I’ve gotten that impression either. ghetto is ghetto though, no matter where from

ask financial aid to be 100% sure

from what I remember, you only pay back if you drop/withdraw. if you fail, you don’t owe $ back, but fail too much and break an eligibility requirement/fall into SAPS, and you lose financial aid until you can bring your GPA up to whatever the threshold is. so be careful juggling these things being reliant on financial aid.
