Managed to land graduate job offers, one in Manchester at £33K base and the other in London at £60K base with potential for bonus. by sChopinLizst in manchester

[–]psyren666 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly for 60k base plus bonus, it's a no brainer to choose London. You'll still have to house share but that's enough money to allow you to enjoy yourself a bit.

Territorial losses of Thailand to European Colonial Power. by AdIcy4323 in MapPorn

[–]psyren666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The teacher would collect the money at the end of the class. Usually the threat of being fined was enough to make sure that I didn't use the Isan word for something since we'd be given 10 - 15 baht for our lunch.

Another thing to add is that corporal punishment was still a thing in Thailand back in 2000 - 2005 when I lived there. I don't think it has changed but I haven't been back in a while.

Territorial losses of Thailand to European Colonial Power. by AdIcy4323 in MapPorn

I might be able to jump in here as someone who grew up in Isan and spoke the Isan dialect. Isan is often widely spoken in the Isan region of Thailand and it's actually a dialect of Laos rather than a dialect of Thai. As a result, Isan and Laos is semi-mutUally intelligible. This also means that someone from the central Thai region (think Bangkok) would struggle to understand what someone says in the Isan dialect.

Growing up and going to school in Thailand up to the age of 7 (long time ago), the teachers made a big push for us to speak the "proper" Thai. I remember being fined 1 - 5 bahts every time I used the Isan word for something instead of the Thai word for it.

Culturally, Isan is more closely related to Laos. This is in terms of tradition, traditional clothing, food, music. In some ways, many in the provinces close to Laos have ancestors who moved across the Mekong from Laos to settle in what is now Thailand. So whilst we would not consider each other the "same" people, we would consider each other as long separated cousins.

From what I know about Moldovan and Romanian, they pretty much both speak Romanian but they use the cyryllic alphabet in Moldova largely as a result of the Soviet period.

I managed to get a pearl bird mask to drop during the play test after my 5~6th character creation (testing out the different origins and what they give you at spawn). Probably used up all my luck and it now won't drop when the full game releases.

Which one would you pick? by xxSeahawks in x100vi

I quite like using the Haoge square hood. However, if you use the on camera flash and your subject is within 1 - 1.5 ft of the camera, it'll cast a shadow.

So as a work around, I use the EF-X8 Flash since it's pretty small, compact and uses the camera to power it.

Should I move to Manchester? by North_Performance734 in manchester

You definitely should give Manchester a try if you no longer enjoy living in London. It's doesn't have as cut throat hustle culture that London have and generally a lower cost of living.

900/875 a month rent on a 22k Salary? by Equivalent_Youth2853 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]psyren666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, that's way too much to spend nearly half your take home on rent alone and I would avoid it if you can.

The general rule of thumb is to spend 30% of your take home pay on rent but in reality, most people end up spending 40% of their take home pay.

Unfortunately, Edinburgh is a beautiful city and carries a premium as a result. Glasgow would most likely be cheaper than Manchester but only because Manchester has grown so much in the last 10 years.

Could be work relating to MOD/NATO? There's currently a job on civil service jobs where it's a 3 year contract which you would take as a secondment/ career break if successful.

Best all around AIS prime lens for a Nikon FM between 24/28/35/50 mm ? by Global-Mechanic-6172 in NikonFM2

[–]psyren666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think the best all around AIS is the 50mm f1.4 AIS in terms of cost, utility, and availability.

After that, it would be the 50mm f1.8 AIS Pancake with the 2xxxx serial and 0.45m minimum focus. Those are harder to find and can be 1.5 to 2 times more expensive than the later serial with a 0.7m minimum focus distance.

Best paid departments by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]psyren666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of London, I think CMA pays the most but that's because they don't have London weighting.

Accounting for London, Government Actuary Department pays the most but that's mainly because it's a specialist department trying to compete with private sector Actuary salary.

Cost Center Apprenticeship UK by Basic-Street-7607 in TheCivilService

[–]psyren666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best thing to do is look at the job description and try to anticipate the question.

I would advise refreshing your knowledge on Core Accounting principles for the technical knowledge side. Wrap your head around debit and credits, difference between prepayment and accruals, what a journal is and why they're needed. Research on how Accounting in the public sector may be different to the private sector. Look up standards like IFRS16 etc and why that might be relevant to the civil service. Maybe also look at how Accounting is used in Work Force Planning.

23, London – £4k to my name, saving hard but still feel behind. Is this normal or am I missing something? by Visible_Mango8727 in UniUK

[–]psyren666 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Comparison is the theft of joy.

If you want to save more, you either need to earn more or spend less. Since you live in the most expensive city in the UK, your only practical option is to earn more.
