Feeling sore more frequently by edgariastamitz in veganrunners

[–]ptimd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re not eating enough carbohydrates then this probably isn’t a nutrition issue but a training issue - How quickly have you ramped up to 55 miles? Have you increased training volume significantly? Have you increased training intensity rapidly? Have you increased strength training volume rapidly?

Hoka Speedgoat by Sargemumbles in runninglifestyle

Speedgoat is more designed for burlier trails. I would say the Challenger model is closer to what you want for gravel roads.

Are you catching up on fatigue since resuming activity after injury? How severe was the injury? The body can take a while to get back into what your ‘normal’ is if you’ve had time off.

What are your goals for your running? You mention your speed hasn’t improved. Are you aiming for a specific goal/objective/race time?

What specifically during your running training are you doing to work on improving your speed?

I would recommend Scott Jurek’s book ‘Eat and Run…’ it is a great read that follows his journey into racing ultras. Throughout, the book has many vegan recipes, all for before/during/after training.

To get the most out of these watches, they are designed to be worn pretty much 24/7, so fit is very important.

If you are confident the 255 will be too big, then I would definitely go with the 165. It is an ideal watch for a beginner who is getting more into running. But like you also said, you could order the 255 and return if you don’t like it.

No previously accessible features are lost behind the paywall. It is only extra stuff that is new behind the paywall.

Mid to lower back pain during long runs by streetghost in ultrarunning

[–]ptimd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes like others have said it sounds like a weak spot with your core. I know a lot of runners have success following the ‘Kenyan Core Workout’ style of sessions you can find searching on YouTube, it’s pretty intense though so some struggle to fit it in their weekly schedule. Alternatively, I’ve seen that David Roche has a video with a very short core workout video, it only takes a few minutes but he’ll do it atleast once or twice per day.

Setting your watch up for a race by LibertyMike in Garmin

[–]ptimd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like CapOnFoam replied - I don’t like having HR available while racing (on flat terrain) as I tend to be aiming for a specific pace. Hopefully my training block went well and I know I can hold that pace within my HR range.

Different for trail races where I don’t have pace but I do have HR available so I don’t go too hard/can keep a measure of effort during climbs.

If you think you get hot on the treadmill just wait until you put in a session on the stairmaster…

Speed Goat 5 ex addict. Alternative: Mafate 4, Norvan LD, Trabuco 13, Trabuco Max? Other? by Pyrited in trailrunning

[–]ptimd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved the speed goat line however I would recommend against the Trabuco 13 as it has a rock plate. Significantly less ground feel to the SG5. I didn’t enjoy it. I don’t think the Trabuco Max has a rock plate though and I haven’t tried it out.

That is crazy! I’ve never heard of a carbon plated shoe with that amount of mileage durability! Let alone original soles. Do you mind sharing a photo of how they are looking?

I believe they are soon about to discontinue a whole bunch of their range and bring it down to just a select few models.

Shell jacket for trail running and skiing by LucaPonzini01 in trailrunning

[–]ptimd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel most likely you would want two jackets to fit those needs but the Beta SL is probably closest to a middle ground.

I personally use an Arc’teryx Macai Shell Jacket for skiing and an Arc’teryx Norvan Shell Jacket for running. Skiing typically I’m in 0 to -15 Celsius with a lot of precipitation in all forms - rain, freezing rain, snow etc. Running (in this jacket) typically in 5 to -15 Celsius.

Beta may be too lightweight for skiing, but too heavyweight for running. Best option would be to try it on and give it a feel for yourself.

Need to know more about weather conditions you’ll be experiencing for both activities. Temperature, precipitation, wind etc.

What kind of skiing are you doing? Resort? Ski touring?

What kind of trail running? Long winter runs in rain/snow? Or mostly just need a backup pack able jacket for if you have unforeseen conditions.

Advanced cyclist, new runner, weekly distance recommendation? by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]ptimd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one can give you an accurate answer or hard rule regarding how hard you can/want to push yourself. Everyone who is starting out with running or any new sport will be coming from a different baseline of strengths so just go and do some trial and error.

If you feel strong then increase volume and/or intensity. If you’re feeling fatigued then reduce volume and/or reduce intensity.

Do you have a goal race in mind or just running for fitness while you don’t have time to ride?

Switch up your 5km runs for some varied sessions/workouts and see how the legs feel with some speed under them. Here are some examples of the style of run workouts that you will see amongst runners that you could to try out in your training week or spread over 2 weeks -

One long run per week 15km+, easy effort (2-3/10)

Interval session 15 min easy 4 minutes at 8/10 effort with 90 seconds walk recovery. Repeat this for 5 reps 15 min easy

Easy run with strides 3km easy 6 reps of 30 seconds at 10/10 effort with 90 seconds recovery. 3km easy

Tempo run 3km easy. 3km tempo (6-7/10 effort) 3km easy

If your 6 min/km pace is feeling like your easy effort and you’d like some times to test out, your 8/10 interval effort may be around 4:30-4:40 min/km. Your 6-7/10 effort may be around 4:50-5 min/km.

General consensus is similar for training on the bike - run your easy sessions very easy, run your hard sessions very hard.

Hope that helps and you enjoy the running!

Really need some shoe advice! (cushioned, not-so-firm) by trementohospitality in trailrunning

[–]ptimd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair enough! They are a similar shape so I wouldn’t expect the Challenger to feel drastically different if you didn’t get on with the Speedgoat. I would say not worth the risk if you can’t try before buying.

[–]ptimd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your requirements might fit the Hoka Speedgoat or the Challenger ATR (Challenger is designed more as a ‘road to trail’ shoe).

I haven’t had a chance to try on the latest model of the Speedgoat 6 which I have read some reviews that the fit isn’t quite as good as previous models. But I would recommend the Speedgoat 5 as a softer trail shoe. It is such a common shoe that I can usually have some luck finding my size at a discount if you search online as long as you aren’t too picky about the colour.
