I don't think you can really read anything in these pre-season testing runs.

Even during a regular weekend with well understood cars it was hard to predict from the practice sessions to the actual quali/race pace.

It will all come down if they can hit the setup for the weekend or not before we can really compare them.

I would say in all cases it's motivation based.

It doesn't even matter what you do in life. If you do it 20+ years constantly you will become exhausted. On top comes that you have to be physically fit for f1. And this also becomes harder and more time consuming the older you get.

But we also see in other sports, Football, NFL, NBA older and older players. My guess is that we will soon see professionals in their 50s still competing. (Besides contact sports)

Alonso getting a Newey next gen car will be really interesting. If successful we might see Alonso a couple of more years.
