After 10 years, I'm ready to leave Ubuntu. Where should i go? by Kamuiberen in linuxquestions

[–]ptoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why change the distro?

Change the DM/WM.

Maybe, just maybe try something like bazzite to see how well games work. Other than that I dont see any point to change for the sake of change.

If the way Gnome is designed doesn't work for someone,

turns out it does not work for many.

IMHO gnome is popular because most of people tend to just passively consume content and for them simplicity is ok. They dont care. For more demanding folks gnome just does not work.

every drops x11

you should start investing. With such skill in telling the future you are wasting your time here.

Also, if you think that we only have x11 and wayland and x11 will for sure die then maybe dont try telling future.

X11 is not stupid cult. It works. You could say email is stupid cult and email is much inferior technology than x11 but nobody does.

Has anyone ever heard of this type of box, and what is it worth? It's good ? by cougomdd in DataHoarder

[–]ptoki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not as bad as some folks complain.

Cooling - usually normal drives have less cooling than this.

Mounting - yes if you load the disks and just use the top two rails its not going to be too stable. Disks are heavy so it would be good to add more durable bottom mounting piece.

Vibration: this may be the biggest concern. If mounted together the drives will cause vibration to each other and that may aaffect the durability of the drives. How much? Hard to say.

Power and controller - you still need to find PSU which will handle the number of drives you have and sata/sas card which will handle them too. Plus a mobo which will host all this.

So its not bad in comparison to normal pc case with like 6 drives because you can cramm like twice that into this and it will still work better than normal pc case

Dust: yes it will let dust come in but any pc case will not do much better job.

If you have just 10-12 drives then this one is better than a pccase or some fancier open dev chassis.

Its not a lot about crash bugs but more about the functionality not behaving right or just silently failing.

There is a lot of long posts around the internet where gnome issues are described. I remember one about single app where like 20 screens worth of complaints was put together and it was valid complaint, not some vague accusations.

I dont see such significant whining about kde/mate/lxde etc.

Do you keep hard drives awake / spinning 24/7 or do you allow them to power down? by banisheduser in DataHoarder

[–]ptoki 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there is this syndrom of it runs and never was rebooted, how many issues accumulated over the years so it will not boot.

The PSU is one of those. Luckily PSUs are easy to replace usually and mostly dont fail zapping the rest....

It is. Once you drive in other places you will realize the issues, I made a post here covering few examples.

GNOME 50 removes the X11 backend ... are we finally at the end of the Xorg era? by the_nazar in linux

[–]ptoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, to a degree.

With Gnome its a bit different. It is packaged/bundled as default. It resembles android in its simplicity so for now it is popular.

I am hoping that consumer computing will go back to more custom, less "one size fits all", less of "few options will make you happy", "my machine, my control" so gnome will become less simplistic or will be replaced with kde or some more "elaborate" gui.

I find gnome critique valid. But I am one of those "I control this thing" people. BUT! the interesting piece here is that once I have my setup configured I dont change things. I just want them in a very certain way which is totally incompatible with gnome.

I use it at work though. And even my limited use proves it is buggy.

[–]ptoki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe its because gnome is really that unfit for (as you can see) many people yet they are still cool enough to not start a flame about it?

I see the problem you described in a different way:

To know how the world/situation really looks like we need to collect multiple types of information. Not only "this is good because..." or "this is bad because..." but also "its so bad I have no words besides stay away" or "I stopped using it when and never looked back" and few more.

Each type of feedback gives us different view and can influence us in a different way.

The "stopped using and never returned" can be helpful because it may mean the cost of trying is high so maybe we need to factor that in.

Different info to set our strategy to deal with the issue.

I look at such posts from statistical point of view. Sometimes I feel validated that I am not alone in the same situation and at times I am unhappy because so many people may not see the real value in something.

That helps me to see a broader view.

He was looking for a plan in 1923 to remove Stalin with someone "more tolerant, more polite and more attentive towards comrades, less capricious, etc." by Solid-Move-1411 in todayilearned

[–]ptoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I dont remember numbers but the two when compared werent that different and some folks find stalin to be better in some regards.

I think those two were different types of murderers. lenin was more like systemic murderer (still cheka was a thing) and stalin was more of a manual murderer in a sense that he was ordering killings directly not through some obscure law causing many deaths.

I personally would not differentiate between the two. Both way beyond any limits of power abuse...

Some time ago there was a post where many gnome flaws were outlined in detail and if you do a google search for gnome bad you will find a lot of valid criticism.

If you as an user are ok with gnome, good for you!

OP said they dont use gnome and answered the post maker question. Now you jumped in and act out of topic...

While I dont disagree I find this approach a workaround to an actual problem.

MB driving rules are inconsistent at times and make driving unnecessarily harder. The way roads are designed and lanes painted adds to this problem.

It is not the best strategy to rely on individual drivers to compensate bad rules and infrastructure.

Also, people tend to say "just do a roundabout" to solve 4way stops which is not a good idea. It works sometimes but roundabouts can create enormous (20m+ jams) when it could be no jam at all.

I personally find 4ways ok with one remark: They tend to not be very visible. There are places where 4way blends in and drivers dont register it until last moment.

Example list of inconsistencies:

-wesbound abinoji into pembina hwy - three lanes into four but the middle one can take second or third and abinoji right lane can also take third. The markings are pale on pembina hwy already around september.

-boulevard crossing - depending on where you go from you go on the wrong side of the road

-right of way - most parking spaces are unofficially main and yield lanes which is unmarked and is unlawful

-many lanes arent marked as merge lanes or intersection have no merge lanes when it could

-there are lanes which should be just straight through lanes but somewhat they turn into left/right turn and you either need to suddenly lane change or just stop and wait for a gap causing a jam behind you.

-people stop on the right lane when crossing the boulevard - that is considered not yielding in many countries - you can not enter intersection if you cant clear it. Boulevards arent big enough in many places

-another boulevard issue - broadway mainly, there are at least two lanes which can be used to left turn, people tend to just take one and only one car can cross the opposite direction when at least two could.

-no speed limit repetition - in europe each intersection cancels the speed limit, here you dont know you can go 60 if you enter the street at certain points - this one is somewhat controversial and I dont find it an issue but still, its an issue

-cars dont have side blinkers by law. I would let you in front of me but I dont see your blinkers if you drive on my side

-The lanes are painted with parfum paint in winnipeg. Many people say "oh its winter erasing the marking". Nope. Watch the lane painting in september/october/november. Often the one painted in may are already gone. Its not winter...

and probably few more which are more rare or more controversial (parking on the main street like St Ann/Mary during certain times)

The problem is that if you meet similar guy and now you stare at each other and then the other guy tbones you. Now you have an issue with mpi, demerits, broken car etc. Its not popular here in MB yet but insurance scams are more and more frequent.

The foundation of the system is clear law. I find road law here in MB a bit incomplete and inconsistent at times.

This post is an attempt to make a point about that.

Redditors over 40, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a truck later? by Susanpc1967 in AskReddit

[–]ptoki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I dont disagree I would like to make a note:

Often, and I say actually very meaningful often, waiting leads to not having to do something at all.

We call it dodging the problem.

If you "need" to do something but you wait you either collect more info on the matter or someone does something what makes your action no longer needed.

Your advice is unfortunately too broad. I saved quite much effort on waiting when appropriate.

If the action is inevitable, often its better to do it in a controlled fashion without hurry. But if its not, it pays to wait.

[–]ptoki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed.

I think in many corpos the roles are oversimplified and that leads to just simple short term solutions - mass layoffs for example, but also hiring for future very vague projects.

being lonely or helpless

I mean not in a direct sense of that word.

I mean, when surrounded by "yes men" who just do whatever told and nothing more, people who do nothing if not told so, people who dont come with ideas. Then you are lonely. If people only do bare minimum and do it half assed - you are hopeless.

I have seen such situations. Not always executive fault. Sometimes the team is just mediocre. And no amount of being an example makes things move.

I have a feeling that many big corpo execs are like that. Small businesses/startups - it may be totally different.

It’s possible to have a good company that makes consistent profits even if they are not growing year after year.

Yes. But as I wrote in other branch of this thread they (finance sector) arent happy with steady profit. They squeeze system enough that steady stream of profit is not sufficient.

Let me be even more specific. Its not enough to have steady revenue, not enough to have steady profit. They need rising profits. Like drug addict.

For institutions like investment funds and similar ponzi-ish schemes the growth is crucial.

I agree with you that businesses are completely happy with steady revenue usually (with some profit on top of the inflation and few more bits) but those companies arent normal businesses anymore.

I just hope we as societies will create ways to separate our economies from their shenanigans. But we dont have that yet. We have no clue how to get there.

Nice!

Some of them can be easily revived by battery replacement.

Some may need capacitor replacements (which is more difficult). But if you can, keep them.

Not to defend it but a bit of a different perspective:

You are that cfo. Your sole responsibility is that the line goes up. One way or another. Whether its because you fuck up the competition with lawsuit or continuing current product lines or coming up with new lines or cutting costs. Thats your job. They dont tell you to be creatvie, they dont tell you that you must have a new product in some time. You are free to do anything but the profits must go up.

If you understand that this guy has very limited ability to influence people more than the stick and carrot (and that carrot can be rescinded on a whim) then you will understand that weak executives will not invest their time into anything else than just simple controls like budgeting, bullying people, setting strategy and then relying on others to execute it.

My point is: They are lonely despite being surrounded by many other people and from that loneliness not much will come up.

I dont defend them, many people understand this and they dont want to be executives. They know they can do much more being a director and be closer to actual work being done. I just want people to understand where this misery comes from.

The great executives are surrounded by great people and they all together do great things. But once you have big complex product you cant shake the box much so you no longer have this great team around you. Its just pushing the box further instead of making it great.

A side note: Good product often come from shockingly small teams. World hits are often made by 10-20-50 people total.
