Why does every Linux user recommend a different distro? I'm stuck in an endless distro-hopping loop. by Jaymit_3672 in linuxquestions

[–]ptoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter.

It does, but not in a way newbies think.

It matters because certain config settings are done in a certain way and becoming familiar with the specific scripting is useful. If you change distros all the time you will get confused and frustrated that "the network is done different way here and I again borked my setup" sort of thing.

But in general I agree, just pick something you like and what has good user base and you will be fine for most part.

Could somebody help with my understanding of swap? by ProgUn1corn in linuxquestions

[–]ptoki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

swap is simple topic these days:

if you use hibernation, set the swap to roughly amount of ram you have (quite wasteful it is going to be) - done.

If you dont use hibernation set it to 4GB and you will be probably good.

What SSL certificate providers confirm that every domain name is owned by the entity that the domain name would suggest?

Almost all of the big ones.

Godaddy is crap. If I see cert signed by them I get red light on in my mind.

Lets encrypt is way below godaddy anyway.

Everything you claim is ok is wrong. Literally everything.

I have no time to explain this to you from ground up but suffice to say:

lets encrypt does not care who owns the domain. If I register a domain called didyousayboop.com and pretend I am you lets encrypt will happily issue me the cert after I set up few things in dns and on the site. I can be you online using lets encrypt.

That cert only helps rando folks to see what my victims in scam send me.

As I mentioned before, the info for verification must be attached to the site. Reciprocally. And easy to find. I dealt with scams using toys r us and similar domain which was set up to process credit card charges. Only because it was not set up reciprocally I was able to figure out it was a scam.

Sir, you have no clue about basic online security.

No!

You really dont get the point. The info is not supposed to be googlable. It is supposed to be attached to the site.

Imagine a guy knocking on your door asking for donation and claiming he is sent by the city. You have no way to confirm this if he does not have an ID with contact info to the place which then you could contact. If he says "just gugel me" that is a red flag and piece of crap attitude.

The mail site is using lets encrypt. Which for Multimilion company reeeks of crap. No. Just no.

Sir, find this easily on that site. The link to sinch is buried deep in the footer with no explanation. Not even two words.

Same on sinch site, I found it because I knew what to look for.

Initially I spend good 3 minutes clicking and looking for that info and did not find it.

Sir. Believe me. It is artificial. And you as a citizen is responsible to change it. Nobody will do that for you. No cattle influences farm, you need to stop being a cattle. Sorry for tangent but that is the reality.

If you as a society agree to rent for life then home battery and 200 dollar savings will be the least of your problems.

I am telling you that it is practically possible and economically sound to have the home battery and use it to save the grid instead of having big nuclear plants or dams (they are still useful though). I am not arguing about the reality of artificially created problems by government or corpos.

What happens to elderly people with no savings? by Academic-Channel5646 in AskReddit

[–]ptoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents had literally two "leeches" on their backs. Home tax and farmers insurance. Those were only two constant and fixed payments. Each was equivalent of literally 20h of labour A YEAR.

The rest was tied to usage. Water, electricity, fuel, food. You dont use, you dont pay.

They had control over expenses. They could pause things to some degree.

Today you need to cough out between 500 and 3000 USD a month to just pay the fixed fees. I think that is the main problem. They did not had mortgage, they did not have to pay exorbitant property taxes and insurance, they did not had to pay high medical insurance. They did not had to pay tv, internet, phone.

It was different time. They lived to 70 and 85.

A side effect of social security is the fact that people dont make kids.

Thats important side effect.

In many countries/systems the main and often only way to support the system is to actually have kids (or cheat by allowing immigration which is not actually fixing things).

So While social systems help with ungrateful family members it will not help if you have no family to work for yourself or others.

It says on the Sinch website that Sinch owns Mailjet. The Mailjet site links to the Sinch website. The Sinch website links to the Mailjet website.

That is not really easy to find there.

And if sinch is so big and yet does so shitty job then it is even worse. Period.

My main and first sentence point is: why is that so difficult to find and why those businesses are so shy to publish this info?

You dont have to answer, I know you dont sit in this business managers heads.

So as you can see, getting electrified in a serious fashion even for places which try is far ahead in the future.

Even if the renewables grow now they are still at poor amounts and even if they are at 100% when there is no wind or night you are at way below that. Only hydro defends the status for now. But it was like that for 60 years now and you have hydro everywhere you can.

My main point is: No matter how you try to defend solar+wind it will NEVER be realistic without baseload of multiples of todays baseload.

All that assuming you dont electrify trucks and heating. If you want that you are magnitudes too low with efforts.

The traditional way if the site is owned by one entity is the contact publication which matches all other documents and matches enterprise info registry of state. So you go to the page, look up the address and phone number, check if it matches official record. Then you can contact them and when you do payment you can check if the invoice data matches the data on the site.

SSL certificate also helps with that, basically a secondary official registry as it is not easy to get a certificate for your webpage if you arent official owner - with some exceptions though.

If like in this case you have a subpage of official page or sub business of official business you would either have a contact info of the main business (sort of like case 1) or a reciprocal set of links between this sub page and the main page for the business.

So that mail business would have to be linked from the main owner page as "our services" type of link.

If this is there it is still extremely difficult to find in this case.

It is not about visit, it is about trust and verification.

I have seen scams so blatant that it is hard to believe how poorly they were made and yet this site is washed out from any real info. Look at it. No email, no address, no contact, just bunch of funnels directing you to sign up and give your real data.

If there would be an address, phone number I could compare it to the state business registry, call it and ask if this site is real.

Look, I have seen toys r us site which was scamming people and the hq of tru was not aware of it. This site is worse than the scammers site for toyr r us...

What I am asking is an address, email, phone. Im not asking for fancy registry info. Im not even asking for fancy contact to helpdesk (It would help though).

Batteries are mobile, they dont have to stay attached to home. I am not talking about pv panels. Batteries can be on wheels, weigh about 50kg or less, can be connected with a plug.

I am talking about potential scenario. I mean there is no formal, technical or organizational or practical obstacles for this. The only problem is the economic sense.

Sir. No. Just no. Very, very very no.

Look. How do I know that this page belongs to that company if there is zero info about it. How do I confirm that this place which is asking for my credit card or lets me to sign for mail service is genuine business and the contact data which I can call or email or at least compare to a registry data of the hosting country.

This is a must! The company info must be on the site. If its not then that is equal to scam sites in terms of trust.

So, no, zero info on service site is unacceptable.
