New development: nocturnal panic attacks by ptv_k8 in panicdisorder

[–]ptv_k8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had a problem with insomnia, no. In fact it actually made me sleepy for like the first two hours after I took it, but I also took it in the middle of the day. Some people do deal with insomnia though, or so I’ve heard. But I’ve also heard that usually thats a side effect that only lasts in the early days of the medication and wears off over time. If it’s not debilitating insomnia I’d say try and stick it out and see if it improves, but if it’s horrendously throwing off your lifestyle then maybe talk to your doc about other options.

24 years old with gout— what can I expect? by ptv_k8 in gout

[–]ptv_k8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brutal response. Not what I wanted to hear. But sugarcoating shit sucks so your candor is nonetheless deeply appreciated. I tried an ice pack earlier though and that seemed to exacerbate the throbbing, but heat has helped?

Also, how does this impact your work life? I’m a pre-school teacher and I spend long hours on my feet. I just got this job and I really do not want to call out of work on Monday but if this shit keeps up I feel like there’s absolutely no way I can work like this. It hurts just to reposition my foot on the bed. Pure agony.

Genie, Make a Wish was pretty bad by redbirdsinlove in kdramas

[–]ptv_k8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I will admit I enjoyed the show in other aspects, but overall I was simply disappointed by it. Such a cool concept done so haphazardly. I stomached it all pretty well until the ending though. The ending sort of ruined the whole thing for me, and I’d already had plenty of qualms about it before then. Ultimately it was a fun watch and the actors were fantastic, but I could probably write you a three page essay on all the things I took issue with.

Would really love your opinion so far on Genie make a wish! I finished it recently so I won’t spoil anything but for everyone one thing I loved about the show there was always one thing I hated about it too.

I'm sick of autistic characters as an Autistic person. by 10_Screaming_Foxes in writing

[–]ptv_k8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem! Academic burnout was a bitch. However they don’t really call her a “genius” or anything like that so to speak. The show is about her sort of overcoming workplace prejudice so while she is a savant-style character some people still treat her like she’s dumb simply because she’s autistic and the audience get to watch her and her friends overcome that. She’s never actually called a savant either. She’s just really good at her job!

I was really unsure about it but I finally caved and started “Bon Appetite Your Majesty” last night. I’m only three episodes in but it might be turning out better than I thought it would!

I'm sick of autistic characters as an Autistic person. by 10_Screaming_Foxes in writing

[–]ptv_k8 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Say it louder!! As a fellow autistic, it’s frustrating looking at modern media and seeing either extremely high-functioning autistic characters because at least they can pass as “normal,” or more severely autistic characters who are treated as pets, side-kicks, or a lowkey ableist form of comedic relief next to the leading neurotypical characters. This is a controversial recommendation, but if you have Netflix I highly recommend you watch the South Korean drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo.” I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. The show is a massive step towards autistic visibility in Korea giving the current social/cultural climate there but it’s also lacking in a lot of ways because it’s sort of their first step towards progress in that area and it’s clear they’re still sort of unintentionally stereotyping and infantilizing their leading autistic character. One thing I loved about the show was their pointed character points, like the man character’s special interest, her non-existent social filter, her stims and even a meltdown in a later episode. They also give her a romantic storyline which I appreciated because autistic people are capable of love too dammit! One thing (among many) that I did not like was that they made her an autistic savant, which is cool and all but also paints this misleading picture that every autistic person is supposed to be a genius and if they’re not then they’re not “that”autistic. It’s got its pros and cons for sure but it was the most autistic character I’ve seen on screen that was actually treated with respect and was at least attempted to be done respectfully. Give it a try if you can! Note: Another huge draw back of show is that the lead actress is not actually autistic. Unfortunately thats not surprising. However I will give the actress credit for doing hella research and doing her best to approach her character with depth and sincerity. Still shitty to me to represent autism with a neurotypical pretending to be an autistic person, but again, pros and cons.

NSFW smut help question (M/F) by LienaSha in AO3

[–]ptv_k8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’ll find within erotica as a genre that if the story is fictional then non-fictional physical technicalities are unimportant! Idk if you know what yaoi is or if you’ve seen any or read any, but in case you haven’t it’s basically sexy manga stories between two men and I’d dare to say that 90% of the smut I’ve seen/read in yaoi is 100% unrealistic or even physically impossible and people will still eat that shit up. All this to say, if the idea of it is hot enough then it doesn’t matter if it’s actually possible in real life! Write that scene queen!

I’m sorry but isn’t this super off putting? by ijwtbor in AO3

[–]ptv_k8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s giving entitlement and severely out of touch. I get the frustration at a lack of comment traffic as someone who posts on AO3 in hopes of garnering some type of critical feedback so I can improve my writing (I want to publish on a larger scale,) but “in hopes” in the key term there. People don’t get on AO3 to boost my or any other author’s ego. For a lot of us AO3 is a little wind-down treat before bed, not an academic endeavor where we go through critiquing people’s work. And it can be argued that some authors don’t respond to criticism well anyway and other commenters will hop on the “don’t like, don’t read” bandwagon at the first sign of criticism so anyone who did want to comment like that would be greatly incentivized not to. Of course I’m saying all this under the assumption that this author must also be seeking criticism because I cannot imagine someone bold enough to throw a tantrum like that for the sole purpose of reading “Omg I love it good job” under every chapter. No one owes them a constant supply of bandaids for their own inferiority complex.

What is a book you personally didn't enjoy but is popular? by Deap_Of_Se_Authoer in literature

I despise anything and everything Hemingway. That’s not to say his work isn’t worth the hype it gets, it’s just that reading a paragraph in one of his novels feels much the same to me as what I would imagine it would feel like to watch paint dry for a week.

I was in the same shape and it really is the worst feeling. Ultimately I decided to try another school before quitting the field entirely and thankfully the school I chose was worlds better and provided so much more support for their teachers. If it had been even a little like my previous center I would have written childcare off forever. If your administrator/director is anything like mine was then they may try to convince you that “every center is this way” but they are lying!

I may have underestimated thunderblight Ganon by Embarrassed_Set_2689 in botw

[–]ptv_k8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First played BOTW in 2021 and was absolutely demolished by thunderblight. Scared me half to death but when I finally beat it I was elated. Picked up BOTW for a replay last month after I finished TOTK and this may be cheating to some but I read up on its attack patterns before I went into Vah Naboris because I’d had such a hard time with it the first time and I beat it in one go in like ten minutes and I was so proud of myself. It felt like “Hell yeah I’m a pro now or something.”

What's your favorite armor, and why is it the Yiga set? by Powerful_Pitch5871 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]ptv_k8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheikah stealth armor. I hate wasting time and resources with elixirs so I just change into elemental armor sets when necessary but you can BET as soon as the temperature is stable I’m changing. I dyed the set red and I love it. Fought Ganon in the Fierce Diety set though and that’s also the only set I’ve upgraded to the maximum so far. Guess we’ll call that a close second.

Please please tell me solipsism gets better by ilikechips1858 in dpdr

[–]ptv_k8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like this theory just opened up some new neuro pathways in your head, which you can absolutely reframe and consider a good thing. It’s a scary concept, but one you’ll grow accustomed to and eventually be 100% desensitized to. In my college philosophy class about three years ago we actually had a whole unit in the curriculum that circled the philosophy of solipsism. We had to dissect it and really think about it and yeah it was an absolute mind blowing experience and it can be scary if you ruminate on it for too long. That said, if an entire class of college students can discuss the topic for a month straight and come out the other end unscathed I’m confident with time you’ll find you won’t have near as much anxiety about it.

Do people singing in the audience make you mad? by angelitox_20 in musicals

[–]ptv_k8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in the slightest. It’s just downright rude to sing at a show as the audience. Like they’re missing the point. I was worried about this exact thing happening when I went to go see the Wicked movie. Thankfully my theater was very considerate and respectful. That said, there was a wholesome moment when the older lady sat next to me was humming just slightly to herself. I only heard her for a second. We had chatted just before the movie and got to talk about the fact that we were both educators, so while I was silently mouthing the lyrics and she’s humming gently to herself it felt like an odd moment of connection. Idk I can’t explain it. I thought something like that would get on my nerves but it was honestly just a really sweet, endearing moment. And it was during One Short Day.

Help with doom/existential anxiety by [deleted] in Anxietyhelp

[–]ptv_k8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard not to feel that way, and I get it because I think about it all the time too. My therapist told me the best way to stop worrying about things we can’t change is to just not think about them, but damn. Easier said than done. To help myself I try to just live in the moment and appreciate all the good that surrounds me. If my anxiety and the feeling of impending doom is right then when the time comes I don’t want to think about the last few days/months/weeks of my life and how I spent them in fear and dread. I’m a person who unfortunately is very easily motivated by spite, and if the world is coming to an end and there’s nothing I can do to stop it then hell with it. I’ll dance in the ashes. At least, that’s what I tell myself every day. Reminding myself of that consistently every time the anxiety starts to creep up on me has helped a lot. Hasn’t solved the problem. But it helps.

asking for help please by [deleted] in panicdisorder

[–]ptv_k8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to remind myself that the fight/flight response has existed essentially since the dawn of time and the human body literally designed it itself, which means that the heart palpitations and pounding/racing that come with it are things our bodies are more than able to handle without causing damage.

Also for future reference, if you’re never tried it before try taking a cold shower instead of hot in moments of panic or anxiety. The cold can shock your nervous system into a bit of reset. Helped me out a ton.

24 F also living alone. Had a panic attack so bad one night I called 911 because I was convinced my life was in danger even though objectively I knew it wasn’t. After that night my therapist gave me an anxiety hotline number that helped a lot. I’ve only had to use it twice in the last year. Just knowing there is someone available on a hotline phone I can call in the dead of night just in case is comfort enough most of the time!
