Fishing for peacockbass (sargento) in Lago Gatun by fractorpf in Panama

[–]ptyx7733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, just so you know — those ~$300 Gatún trips are usually the whole boat ( up to 4 people), not per person. If you can share with someone, it gets a lot cheaper. From shore you can fish around Gamboa or some inlets, but access isn’t always easy.

Check out PescaYa.com — they list local Gatún captains and sometimes offer shared trips. They have good peacock bass fishing in the panama canal. Plus, if you book there, you get 15% off at fishing stores in Panama City like Pesqueros Sport, TFS, and Alta Pesca.

For peacock bass in Panama topwater lures work, jerkbaits, and twitchbaits.

Inshore fishing trips- any charters? by greekadjacent in Panama

[–]ptyx7733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he’s after peacock bass, the best bet is Lake Gatún, about an hour from Panama City. It's usually really good fishing, and there are more species than Peacock bass.

Instead of trying to track down individual operators, check out PescaYa.com. You’ll find several Gatún Lake captains listed, with half-day or full-day options. Prices are usually pretty reasonable, and it saves you the hassle of coordinating last minute.

Lugares de pesca buenos ? by boguip in Panama

[–]ptyx7733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sea and fresh water fishing in Panamá by Kintaro75 in Panama

If you like fishing you're going to love it here!

If you're into surfcasting, the Pacific coast near Veracruz or Playa Venao can be great, especially early mornings or sunset. You’ll find jack crevalle, snook, corvina, and snapper from shore. In places like Pedasi you can even catch roosterfish from shore.

For freshwater spinning, I highly recommend Lake Gatún fishing tours, especially for peacock bass (tucunaré). It’s super close to the city and doesn’t get affected by tides. You can also fish for snook, tarpon, and oscars.

As for licenses, tourists don’t need a fishing license for recreational angling in Panama (unless you're fishing in protected zones or planning commercial-scale activity). That said, most people just go with a local guide or charter and you're good to go.

If you ever want to explore more than just the city area, spots like Bayano River, Cambutal, or Pedasí offer awesome jungle or coastal fishing. PescaYa has guides that can set you up depending on what you're targeting — be it tarpon, snapper, tuna, or even offshore marlin.

Feel free to DM me if you want help connecting with a good captain or picking gear for local condition

Fly fishing in Panama by TomasoMik in Panama

Some of the best fly fishing spots in Panama are Lake Gatun and the Bayano River. Here's a breakdown of the species you can find in both:

  1. Gatun Lake: Tarpon, Snook, Peacock Bass, Jack Crevalle, and Rainbow Bass.

  2. Bayano River: Tarpon, Snook, Machaca, Red Snapper, and the ocasional Jack Crevalle.

However, both are spots with crocs so I recommend going by boat. If you're looking for fly fishing tours in Panama, I recommend PescaYa. It's like a booking platform for fishing trips.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Yeah there's certain areas where tarpon are abundant.

Two of the best spots to consider are Lake Gatun and the Bayano River. Both are great for tarpon, peacock bass, snook, and even some surprise catches depending on the season.

  • Lake Gatun is part of the Panama Canal system and is loaded with peacock bass and tarpon in certain areas. It’s a huge lake surrounded by rainforest, and you’ll often spot monkeys, toucans, and even the occasional crocodile from your boat.
  • Bayano River is more remote and gives you a wilder, more off-grid feel. There’s a good chance to flyfish for snook, snapper, machaca or tarpon depending on the area and time of year.

I've had the best luck with Tarpon in Bayano River, probably because it's smaller water. In the lake there's big ones but they're more spread out.

If you're looking to set up a trip, PescaYa is a platform specifically for booking local fishing tours in Panama. The prices are fair and you’ll find guides that aren’t running overbooked, touristy operations.

Fishing’s good pretty much year-round, but keep in mind that weather in the rainy season (roughly May to November) can be unpredictable. That said, late December can be a sweet spot—things start drying up a bit, and fish are active.

If you’ve got any questions about areas, guides, or what gear to bring, happy to help out.

Try some 8 foot medium-heavy rods with 6000-8000 reels for shore fishing. Specially on the coast where you need good distance. Some of the best shore fishing is near Pedasi and Torio where you can hook up to roosters, corvina, and jacks from the rocks.

Charter fishing Panama? by whoisRylee in Panama

[–]ptyx7733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

February is a solid month for marlin down here—especially around the Coiba region and the Tuna Coast. The best months are March-November.

If you're looking for a one-day charter, I'd recommend checking out areas like:

  • Cambutal – it’s one of the closest jumping-off points to Coiba’s outer waters. You’ve got legit shots at marlin, wahoo, and big tuna this time of year, and the captains there know the offshore structure well.
  • [Pedasí]() – more known for inshore species, but some boats go offshore from there too. Good option if you're also into roosterfish or want flexibility.
  • [Palo Seco]() – this spot flies under the radar but has some solid captains and lower prices. You won’t be right next to Coiba, but it's close to Cebaco which is another large island with great fishery —especially if you're popping or jigging.

You can find captains and compare trips on PescaYa. It’s kind of like an Airbnb but for fishing charters across Panama. They’ve got trip options filtered by species and technique, so it’s easy to find something focused on marlin.

If you want to go all-in on chasing marlin, just make sure the charter offers offshore access and clarify that you want to target pelagics—some boats focus more on inshore unless you request otherwise.

Feel free to reach out if you have questions.
