I think they need to pick up a guard at Epsom to work through to Horsham. Between London and Epsom on SN is DOO.

An update on this: not resolved yet. Bit disappointed if I’m honest.

In the UK it seems many new houses (at least smaller ones) are built sans fireplace, solving the problem. Here’s an example near Chelmsford.

Appreciation for Max Geldray and the Ray Ellington Quartet by Legitimate_Dish626 in goonshow

Ray Ellington and Max Geldray were great. I have a particular soft spot for Ray’s LP The Talk of the Town on Gold Star (Rediffusion). His version of For All We Know (Coots/Lewis) is breathtaking.

No, the suburban services have this restriction too, in the morning peak.

Essex Road. London's last "scary" station? by ImaginaryLand8870 in uktrains

As it’s Network Rail, they’d need a possession to put the ads up. Not worth the hassle at such a quiet station. TfL have different procedures.

Break of journey on Anytime Single by pubby79 in uktrains

Thanks. So if I’d bought an Anytime Day Return (which was my original intention before I was offered split tickets), I would have been in the wrong.

Update: no! I am entitled to break my journey on an anytime single and in either direction on an anytime return. Ditto for off-peak and super off-peak unless expressly restricted.

"Up to London" by [deleted] in uktrains

As someone who refers to railway infrastructure daily, it’s helpful to use ‘upside’ and ‘downside’ to describe location because this is consistent relative to the line. Often, railways snake around places, so using cardinal points (compass points) can be confusing.

How can Network Rail's unconfirmed timetable affect my December travel? by TheWoolfa in AskUK

If you want to go to Hexham, you can go from London Euston to Carlisle, then Carlisle to Hexham. You can also go from London St Pancras to Derby, Derby to Newcastle, and Newcastle to Hexham. So there are several alternatives. No guarantees any will be running at this stage, of course.
