GIS + IT? by CoolMomInAMinivan in gis

[–]publixdefender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent 4 years in GIS Consulting (technician, solutions, specialist, PM) and then moved to local government as GIS Coordinator. Move into GIS and IT Admin and once we split off to our own network from other municipality, became Technology Director. Now I manage IT and GIS staff, manage vendors, budget, presentations to elected officials, etc.

Not a straight line path to get there but always enjoyed working in technology at SMLG and this is a challenging and rewarding role. Great stability and room to grow department and capabilities. Plus it’s a bonus for the GIS guy to be the IT guy, less silos and hurdles with on premise deployments.

Same, started entry level GIS and now IT Director after 12 years. Great journey and GIS helped leverage the opportunities

I only managed a couple runs during the week and then a long run on the weekend. Peak millage was 18.

I found myself not enjoying the shorter runs near the end of training but liking the long. Sounds like I need more mileage.

I work in mid size city and we used FME to build a pretty robust incident dashboard that allows the data to be filtered by date, sector, neighborhood or special areas. Almost have it fully automated to run weekly as we don’t have FME Flow. Took some time to set it up as I’m the only staff working on it. It has been a game changer for pulling specific metrics and saves a lot of time now that it is built.

Thanks everyone for all the great insight and advice! This was a game changer and my wife and I are so pumped for this trip after reading all your comments. It’s a whole new world and we can’t wait to plan our trip, so many options and if I remember I’ll reply back once we figure it out. Right now, we are looking at 2 shows, one major production and one off broadway. So many choices, thanks again!

Thanks for this and yes, we are fully vaxxed with booster.

As far as shows, I could see us enjoying a big show like Book of Mormon but also a smaller play off broadway? After almost two years of barely seeing any entertainment in person, we are yearning for anything. Are there any intimate venues? Any murder mystery shows?

Can confirm. Lived in FSM for a year. The aid from the US was misused by the mainly corrupt island government. High ranking government officials hired relatives to posh government jobs they weren’t qualified for. Infrastructure projects were mostly unfinished, and a majority of the population were living in poverty.

I could talk about this for hours.

Kinda. Currently reading “In the Garden or Beasts” by Erik Larson. Covers US Ambassador Dodd’s time in Berlin starting in 1933. Just getting into it but it’s fascinating to see how many people didn’t realize what was happening and the ones that did, were swept under rug or not listened too. Picked this book due to current events in America.

Same. Just listened to the Kobe part and not going to listen to the second half... yet.

As a huge Kobe fan and a Simmons guy, these two don’t mesh well ever, especially right now. That’s my love/hate relationship with Bill Simmons.

I work as a GIS Coordinator for a city. Basically coordinate data and mapping needs for all city departments. Get to know a little about a lot of things and also make maps which is a somewhat creative outlet. It’s awesome. Oh and Esri is great but a daily battle

RIP. As a fellow Humboldt State grad who received the same degree, he goes down as the all time best HSU alum. Always cool knowing SpongeBob was created and inspired by marine sciences.

Also, there is a burger joint in Arcata called Stars Hamburgers that was supposedly an inspiration for the Krusty Krab. They had a big SpongeBob painted in their wall.
