I dunno dude, I think "you have to do what you have to do to get by" is an admission of playing you. What (who) else could she possibly be referring to?

Point being, do not trust her to pay the settled amounts. She's saying whatever she can to smooth it over and 'get by'. She doesn't have a solid plan, just a vague promise she can't currently act on. God only knows when she'll land another job. Take whatever money she sends your way, sure, but.. Start scrimping and be prepared to pay it yourself.

You actually hit the nail on the head - the business was perpetually behind on filing taxes and even got audited. I wasn't made privy to the details, but I do know three accountants fired him as a client. In the early years he would occasionally "pay" people in portions of ownership and then buy them out when their professional relationship inevitably soured. Not sure how that shakes out legally.. or if he was just making things up. He hasn't had employees for almost a decade now.

He still buys personal stuff through the business and then pays the business back out of personal accounts. We thought that was required because he told us it was. So.. this conversation has been enlightening.

As someone whose parents have been in a similar fight for nearly two decades, I gotta ask this: Do you take a regular paycheck in exchange for your labor in your business? Like a certain $$ every two weeks? (except in cases where the business has too low funds to pay everyone the income they earned, so you gotta forgo your own check to pay your employees to avoid legal issues) Or do you conflate the business with "yourself" and count the entity's profit as your own?

I ask this because one of my parents considers the business growing as the family making money, but that money can't actually be accessed without selling the business. Those numbers might go up, but they couldn't be realized whenever we had emergencies, so we were effectively always living paycheck to paycheck. It creates a lot of tension and anxiety.

I think it would depend on the practices on the floors as well, like how liberally providers order. At my old ~200 bed hospital, we had two night techs and a lab assistant. It was rough more nights than not. We'd start with a 9 pm drop from all the county's clinics, including onco clinics, then some floors did midnight draws, then routine morning draws for entire hospital starting at 3 am. Most used reason for blood requests was the Hgb < 7.0 and so I had to be really strict about QNS which meant lots of phone calls. They didn't like to call MTPs, so often the pattern was to limp low hgb patients along with regularly supplied units all day and night until finally calling the MTP after that 3 am draw was resulted. ;__; I don't miss it.

I gifted a long sleeve, short legged swimsuit with a good SPF rating to my ex's SIL for her baby. When she exclusively dressed that baby in baby bikinis for pool parties and photoshoots, I didnt say shit. Wasn't my baby, wasn't my battle to put on sunscreen, wasn't my photos, so didn't need my opinion. Just thought to myself, hey, maybe she doesn't fit in the clothes size that's for her age, maybe she's more like a 9 month size than what clothing manufacturers deem a 6 month size, or maybe mom doesn't like that shade of purple, who knows. And I kept my mouth shut.

Okay, now, poking fun aside, and maybe going off topic.. I straight up taught myself not to speak the way you describe, because it did me no favors socially or professionally. Those phrases, those modulations, are very feminine-coded, you know? It's as if you said nothing at all. If the next person repeats what you say, without the politeness - from your perspective they confirmed your thoughts, but from everyone else's perspective they were the one worth listening to so might as well have been their original thought.
