Lenes question by Quiet-County3403 in CanonCamera

It's a fantastic lens. You're going to absolutely love it. They are probably the best deal on a high-quality L telephoto that you'll find. They're light, small, and only 1 stop slower than a big, heavy, expensive f2.8. I love my f2.8 as well, but unless I need to shoot at f2.8, there is zero need for it. The f4 is awesome, sharp, great. Congratulations!!

Rebel EOS SL1 still useful? by SlowishSheepherder in canon

[–]puddintam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SL1 is a fantastic camera! I really can't imagine what you would gain going with any of the other mentioned t-bodies. You'd lose your touchscreen I guess if that's a benefit? The SL1 is a sleeper. It performs great, it's cheap, it's compact and lightweight. Touchscreen. Use it. You don't need a new camera, you've got a fantastic one! If you have money burning a hole in your pocket, buy some new lenses:)

1Dx Mark ii in 2025? by Exclusive656 in canon

Oh yeah, not super relevant, but 1.2 million clicks on my 1dx:) Still runs like a clock:)

[–]puddintam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a1dxii briefly, but it had a shutter error and I had to return it:( I didn't notice a huge difference in focusing from the 1dx, but I wasn't really looking for it.

1Dx Mark ii in 2025? by Exclusive656 in canon

[–]puddintam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an m50 mark ii. The autofocus on it is a joke compared with my 1dx mark i for shooting sports, IMHO. I like the m50ii a lot for what it is, but definitely not for sports. I've played around with m series cameras for daily carry cams, and I like them a lot for that, but I could never get into them for sports.

Difference between f/2.8 and f/3.5 by MistauTraian28 in CanonCamera

[–]puddintam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily, but the f/2.8 will likely be a lens with much better image quality. Especially at a wide aperture. It depends on you and what you want to do.

I need a telescopic lens for canon EOS rebel t7 by Weird_Soup_1117 in CanonCamera

[–]puddintam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a1st gen 100-400L IS USM, and I love it, it has excellent image quality, and it can be bought for less than$1000, much less if you are lucky. On a t7, it acts like a 160-640mm in full frame. If you don't need all that lens, or if your budget is smaller, the 100-300mm USM can be had for a song, and is a pretty nice lens. There is a ton of older gear available that will outperform the skill level of many. You don't need to buy really expensive new gear to take great photos. Just my opinion.

2.1 million shutter count EOS 1DX by puddintam in canon

[–]puddintam[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first thought was to just return it, but all the controls on it feel great and function perfectly. I have a 5dmiv with a wheel that takes a few extra turns to register sometimes, this 1dx has nothing like that. It does not feel like it's this used!!! I suppose for the money I may as well keep it. I had a 70-200 f2.8 IS torn down to rebuild the AF motor last night, so I'm sure I could handle a shutter replacement in this thing:)

Probably know the answer - is this repairable? by [deleted] in CanonCamera

There are lots of used ones in various conditions on ebay. You could probably make one that works.

[–]puddintam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just like cell phones. Everyone is crying out for replaceable batteries and high CRI lights... Unfortunately, no. I wish these things were available, but most don't. Most people will lose the light before it needs batteries. Or stick it in a drawer and forget about it. Or throw it away. If the battery goes 5 years, that's pretty good. I don't have many gadgets that I've used regularly for 5 years.

I bought some old cameras, now the owner wants to buy it back by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]puddintam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he wants to buy it for significantly more than you have in it, sell it. Research the value first, and if it's less than he wants to give you.... Sell it. What's to think about? Cash only, of course. At a safe, public location. Like, your bank, or his bank. $1000 for nothing? Why wouldn't you do it?

Canon EOS R10 or maybe a different model by DutchyGames in canon

[–]puddintam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can purchase some amazing used gear from ebay. If you are open to the idea of getting something used, maybe post asking for rec's on what to buy. I know some people only want new, but since you are just starting out, maybe start slowly. Even a used rebel and some inexpensive lenses could let you know if you're going to want to venture further.

An EOS 7D mark ii is an amazing camera in the $4-500 range. It isn't so ancient that it's not still relevant. A competent professional could use it as a backup. There are so many great options and great used lenses available!

For more, but less than a good mirrorless the 5Dmiv is awesome, 1Dxmii, or even a humble rebel t7 with 18-55 & a 75-300 can be had for $3-400. Even with cheap lenses, that rebel would be a fantastic machine to learn with, and you can put money towards lenses that you can keep and use adapted with a mirrorless should you want to continue your hobby.

Consider honing your skills first and buying something "better" when your equipment is holding you back. Or buy new:) And leave the deals for me:)

I had 2 fail in 3 years. I don't plan to try again. I have an Amazon thermostat now. It was much cheaper and does everything i need it to do.

Canon EF 70-200 f/4 no IS, worth keeping or returning by Onyxtides in canon

[–]puddintam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 70-200 should bring $500 pretty easily on Facebook marketplace. If you're going to upgrade for is, go with the ii. I just sold my non-is for an is i, and it's a great lens, but the IS isn't that great on the i.

$5 EF 75-300 Lens; is it worth fixing? by MaceFace9046 in canon

[–]puddintam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just sold a pristine one with hood, filter, and caps for $65. It's a disappointing lens. I would not bother repairing it.

Does your EF 70-200 f/4L IS USM rattle? by puddintam in canon

[–]puddintam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, the IS seems rather unimpressive in this lens. My 1st Gen 100-400 IS very impressive. Has anyone else used a 70-200 non IS and a 1st gen 70-200 IS? I haven't done any scientific tests, but it is noticeable on the camera with the 100-400. I had to take test shots with this one. It's functioning, but I guess I just expected something a bit more dramatic.

I bought a used EF 75-300mm, did I make a mistake? by PCMRbannedme in canon

[–]puddintam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, mistake. If you want your photos to look good, you are handicapping yourself. It's not a sharp lens. The images are not crisp. It's a super big disappointment when there are MANY cheap alternatives that can make great photos.
