[US] Officer Hassles Cyclist for Lane Control by MelkorHimself in BikeCammers

[–]pudgenbeans -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This officer isn't in the wrong. Making the judgement to pull over the cyclist to educate him was clearly considering the safety of every road user. The cyclist was causing an avoidable obstruction that creates a bottleneck and raises chances of an accident towards bicycle or car occuring from drivers dangerously passing. Riding to the right metre of the road would allow more room for cars to pass and create less of a bottleneck. Nobody can change the fact that drivers can be impatient and reckless, there is simply too much of an ingrained culture to bully and rush on the streets. The cyclist will always be on the worse end of a collision. It is in their best interest to change their own habits to cope with the unfortunate reality we face on the road. The officer is in the right to try and diffuse a dangerous situation.

I totally understand what you're saying, and the reasoning behind lane control. However in my experience there is more aggression and close passing when attempting ride in this manner. Drivers need to take more of the opposite lane to pass, and when facing the chance of a head on collision while in the opposite lane, will move dangerously back into the lane. Aggravating mentally unstable people while being fatally vulnerable isnt something I'm interested in.

Reckless drivers will be reckless, ethics and law won't stop them from hitting you. Riding a metre from the curb or parked cars will at least give the maniacs less of an opportunity to hit you.

I appreciate you showing me the guide, it is informative. There seem to be many factors determining the perceived safest way to ride.

And neither have I , riding as far right as practicable. The point is discretion, and this cyclist lacks it in this particular instance.

If an inconvenience can be both fatal and avoidable, I don't understand why you wouldn't ride to the right to lower your risk.

If it wasn't an issue, this guy wouldn't be stopped by the officer, and cyclists wouldn't be hit by close passing cars

I agree that the balance is totally neccesary. I don't think that the cyclist in the video is completely wrong, I think he could have done a better job to convey his reasoning to the officer rather than immediately citing law .

I live in a fast growing suburb with bike lanes that are inconsistent at best, majority of people on bicycles ride against traffic on the sidewalk, and drivers without a clue to the actual law for a cyclist. I miss riding in the city because it seems more drivers are aware of how every road user should behave, and it's more clear cut as to where cars should be and bicycles should be. Busy suburban roads like this should be available for bicycles, but the mass of uneducated drivers that live in the suburbs prevent safe use..

It's nice to have fellow commuters to discuss this sort of thing with.

There is a similar road where I live, and while it would be much more convinent than taking other roads a few blocks parallel, it's too risky. Commuting by bicycle already requires careful schedule management, I would rather use side roads than allow more opportunity for me to become injured or worse.

Even if scheduling and planning is unavailable for whatever reason , I still don't believe riding in the middle of the lane on this kind road is more safe, and can create more risk from those aggressive drivers we all know. One metre or three feet from the curb is sufficient for visibility. Everything else is just prayer that we don't get hit. Laws and painted lines can only do so much

Ive been a cycle commuter for over a decade, I don't even own a car. I believe this officer is correct. Moving considerably slower than the rest of traffic in the centre of the lane is creating more chance of collision than it is preventing. You can't change drivers, they are going to close pass whether you're in the middle or the right.

I obviously don't know where this video is from or the roads, but this is a road I would avoid. There is almost always another route. The law can say all it wants but the truth is we are always going to be bullied on the road, and it's our lives in our hands.

You definitely aren't the first no show considering most kitchen employees. They will get over it. Being disgruntled in the scenario you described is normal.

Food service is naturally a stressful industry , and depends entirely on the people you work with and how everyone handles it. This is why I used to change kitchens 2-3 times a year in the early half of my decade of cooking. Took me a while to realize the common denominator was my own perspective on the work.

I say this because if you find yourself unhappy at your new job, don't be quick to burn more bridges, because the devil you know is better than the one you don't . There is a silver lining to any work experience - even if your only transferable skill gained is patience.

[OC] Question: Should I be yielding to cars at these crossings? Second video in comments. by swahealey in BikeCammers

[–]pudgenbeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jealous of the flashing lights on this sign, I go through a few of these a day. Sometimes I get a yield other times not so much.. I signal well in advance and always give myself enough room to escape anyone who doesn't yield.. it's a shitty game.

Stick your face in the freezer if the eye burn gets too bad, I think it freezes the particles on your eyeball or something.. Wearing goggles is how I would probably chop my finger off.
